  1. :bigear: I have a 3 year old, who only plays at school right now, and an almost 7 year old. While it isn't a problem now, I can see that it will be soon since my son will soon need/want more individual attention. I'll be following this thread with interest and a pencil!!
  2. She'll be 7 in two months. And yes, she does get upset easily and shuts down like you say. And yes, writing would be even worse. But your explanation does help somehow. I don't know if it was just hearing someone say it in different words or what, but it helps. Question: do you do narrations on free reads or only on actual school readings?
  3. What do you suggest when your child HATES narration? We started with WWE. We did the whole answer questions with complete sentences. It was torturous. We've tried just asking what happened in the story/reading/etc and mainly all I get is "I don't know." I'm not sure which way to go with this now.
  4. any of the Teach Me... series for foreign languages? I was cleaning out my catalogs and came across their flyer. Any thoughts about them for a 2nd grader? TIA
  5. Come and meet the Letter People Come and meet the family Words are made from Letter People A B C D, Follow me.....:D I was afraid of that. I tried searching and most of what I turned up was the "new and improved" version. Not to my mind, but then again, I liked what I grew up with! Oh well. Thanks!
  6. I'll be interested to read any responses to this thread! This is something that I'm just starting to wrap my head around. However, when I think of whole to part vs part to whole, I think of the way I learned to read. (My dd, too, now that I think of it.) I learned words. Later I learned sounds, though never as well as I probably should have. I do not learn words by sounding them out phonetically. I learned sight words. The word is the whole; the sounds are the parts. It's big picture vs. details. So in math, I would think that whole would be the mathematical concept and part would be the steps you need to actually solve the problem dealing with the concept. Does this sound right?
  7. Speaking of phonice, I wish I could find a home version of what we used in school. It was called the Letter People. Every letter had a song; there were little videos; it was fun. I even still remember some of the tag lines for the letters. Munching mouth for M. Tall teeth for T. Funny feet for F. The vowels were all female and the consonants were all male. It was fun! Does anyone remember this? I wonder if we could find it for homeschool? Seems like it would have been perfect for VSL's.
  8. You all totally rock!!!! I've got my notebook and my pencil's flying.....
  9. Thanks so much for the link. Very helpful
  10. Those are some good ideas! I'm going to have to look up the Horrible Histories stuff. We're doing Ancients this year and would love something like that to add in. In a total aside, every time I see MEP, I say MEEP. And every time I see VSL, I say Vizla. I now return to your regularly scheduled thread already in progress!
  11. Those sound interesting. Actually I am looking for something to sortof round out Science for next year--2nd. I'm using state standards and building from there since I couldn't find a curriculum I really liked. I'll definitely check out that online one! Thanks
  12. That actually sounds very interesting. Off to look it up. Thanks! :)
  13. Yeah, that sounds like something I'd like! :tongue_smilie: I wish I could have them in hand to look at. :D
  14. Thank you! Later tonight, without kids flying around me, I'll look over everything. A quick question: I'm also leaning heavily toward Singapore. Do you think these two would complement each other enough to use alternatively or are they too different, etc?
  15. YIPPEE!!! Figures I should have Googled!
  16. I didn't realize they had other subjects besides math! Has anyone used their EarlyBird Startup Science?
  17. Boy, am I glad I'm not the only one!!!!! Did I feel dumb!!!
  18. I have looked at MEP several times over the last two years. And every time I do, I think I develop a new twitch!! I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use this program, what to print out, where are the instructions, etc. Is there a tutorial for using MEP? Is there someone who can explain how to navigate the site? Is there someone who can hold my hand??!! :confused1:
  19. Actually, no I have seen that one. Only HWT, which equaled many, many tears!! Since then we've been trying copywork. While there has been some improvement, not enough for me.
  20. This is very interesting to me. After researching and reading, I've discovered that my dd6 has MANY of the VSL traits. The main difference is that she is very verbal: started talked around 5 months, spontaneously started reading around 18 months, etc. But everything else!!! Talk about blow my mind. Being VERY auditory sequential here, I'm having to rethink my entire way of teaching, much less what I was using to teach. Does anyone have any other curricula that they have had success with for VSL's?
