Recommendations for 5th grade language arts
rowan25 replied to rowan25's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We have spent very little time on writing over the years. We have used the first Paragraph Book and about half of the second. So I'm thinking we need something from the ground up, but that also moves fairly quickly out of the single paragraph format and into something more complex. Does that help/make sense? -
Recommendations for 5th grade language arts

There are some really great ideas in here! Thank you. I'm keeping a running tally so I'll have a list to check over the next few months. Anyone have any others to add? :) -
Recommendations for 5th grade language arts

The "upper comprehension" that I was referring to would be the higher order thinking skills. She's excellent with the first few levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, but once we hit analyzing, she starts struggling. And while I realize part of that is age/maturity, it is something that she needs to work on in a specific way (other than my prompting and pulling teeth.). -
My daughter will be in 5th grade next year. She's always been a bit ahead, so there hasn't been a great deal of focus here. I'm looking to buckle down a bit. We're trying MCT right now and, while she really enjoys it, I'm not sure the grammar is actually sinking in. So I'm looking for some recommendations. I'm looking for grammar, work on upper comprehension levels, basic writing and some vocabulary. I also looking for as cheap as I can get away with without sacrificing quality. Any and all recommendations are welcomed! Thanks, Aimee

Yes, that's actually what got us to this point. We had subscriptions to Jr. a long while ago. We were just gifted an older iPad and the kids have "discovered" it again. Thank you. :-)

This is exactly what I was wondering! I couldn't imagine what the homeschool option allowed that I couldn't get for the lesser price. Since we'll be using it for a fun supplement, the home edition is fine. Thanks!
-
No!! I hadn't been over there yet. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm looking into the subscriptions for BrainPop and I'm curious as to the difference between the home option and the homeschool option. Other than price, that is!! If it is basically the same, then why is the homeschool version double the price? Aimee

Ways to teach reading to a suspected dyslexic?
rowan25 replied to rowan25's topic in The Learning Challenges Board
Ladies, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! You have given me much to read and think over. My special education degree isn't helping me at all here and my oldest didn't need my help learning to read. I've really felt all at sea and lost in the volume of information that is available. Thank you for taking the time to break things down and offering concrete suggestions. It is greatly appreciated. Hello all, I haven't been on the forums in a long while, but I find I'm in need of advice. I suspect that my son may be dyslexic. I've read many lists of "symptoms" and he has many of them, including some of the more nontraditional ones. (http://dys-add.com/dyslexia.html#anchorSymptoms has many of these symptoms across categories). He is currently 6.5 and is frustrated that he cannot play many computer games because the games he prefers lean text dependent. Also the phrase "I can't read" is coming too easily to his lips. We are both frustrated. I'm looking for reading programs that aren't too expensive, but that have a track record of working for dyslexic children. I don't mind taking my time and going slowly, but I would like to see some sort of progress, no matter how minimal. We've tried Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons and it was a disaster. Currently we're working through Explode the Code and Bob Books, which is going "well" but with no retention or transference of skills. I'm looking into programs for next year when he will be 7 and hoping for some help. Please ask if more information is needed; I'm really at my wit's end. Thanks in advance, Aimee

I'm bumping this up because I just stumbled across this program, Rocket Phonics, and was curious if anyone has any opinions about it. :confused1:

I came across an online reading program called Study Dog. Has anyone here had any experience with it or heard anything about it? Thanks in advance, Aimee

Recommendations on good quality art supplies?
rowan25 replied to rowan25's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
NO, we don't have a sharpener!!! In fact, at the time I bought our Stockmar's, I looked for one and couldn't find one anywhere! Yes, it's been a few years! I will definitely be looking into that! Thank you!! :) -

I'm definitely leaning toward the Ferby's for our pencil choice. My kids like the size, shape and point of the Crayola crayons, but HATE the smell......to the point where they won't color even when they want to do so. I was really hoping to find something like that in beeswax. I guess we'll just stick with the Stockmar's, even though they get frustrated with the size of them and find the blocks too unweildy in their hands. Thanks everyone, this was quite helpful! :-) Aimee -

Thanks for the recommendations, folks. Keep them coming!!! Any thoughts on a crayon similar to Crayola, but in beeswax? My sensory sensitive daughter would appreciate any ideas you have! Aimee -
Hi Everyone, I'm looking for some recommendations on good quality color pencils and crayons. We've been using Crayola brand pencils and they don't sharpen well and break easily. Also my kids love the Stockmar beeswax colors, but as they have gotten older, they are frustrated at the lack of point on them. Does anyone know of any beeswax crayons that are more similar to regular crayons? Thanks in advance, Aimee

Reading programs for right brained learners?

Is the full subscription much different from the free Starfall? My son hasn't really clicked with Starfall, so I've been hesitant to check out the full version. I haven't heard of Sparklebox or Sound City Reading. Thanks!! -

I did come across the Right Brain Phonics book in reading, but wasn't sure if it was any good. Does anyone have any experience with it? -

I hadn't heard of Primary Arts of Language. I'll have to look into that. And it didn't occur to me to check Currclick! Thanks!! -
Hi all, Does anyone know of a reading program that would be good for a right brained learner? I believe my son may be one and he is struggling with learning to read. I'm thinking that he needs something more visual. Possibly All About Reading? Anything else out there? Thanks in advance, rowan

Anyone using LOF and Khan Academy as their only math?
rowan25 replied to rowan25's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We actually settled on two days of MM, two days of LOF and a day of Khan. Of course, if she wants to "play Khan," I have NOOOOOOO problem with it!! ;-P
