  1. Thanks guys! I'm off to check those out. Any other suggestions out there?
  2. We are currently reading This Country of Ours for American History. We HATE it. All of it. And all of us. I need to replace it with a different book as soon as possible before we all fall asleep and are unable to wake up!! I'm looking for a spine-type American History read aloud book that is suitable for grades 1-5ish. This is meant to be a gentle, gradual introduction to the chronology of American History separate and apart from our regular World History (which is CHOW and we love it!!). Please, please help!!!!!!!:tongue_smilie:
  3. It's early yet and I haven't finished my coffee yet! :tongue_smilie: But lately I've been enjoying http://www.freelyeducate.com/ and http://www.homeschoolfreebie.wholesomechildhood.com/about/. Now if I could just come up with a way to remember what I have downloaded and actually use it!!!!
  4. That is interesting. My handwriting isn't anything like my parents. However, I distinctly remember going out to get the mail and finding a letter in the mailbox that I had written. Except that I didn't. It was from one of my dad's sisters that lived out of state. Our handwriting is virtually identical, so much so that I thought I had written a letter to myself and forgotten about it!!!
  5. This is all well and good, but what if you are font ignorant!! This idea actually appeals to me for my daughter, but I wouldn't know which fonts to show her for her to pick from. Is there a website that lists a few of them for comparison purposes? TIA!
  6. Oh good! I hadn't done more than flip through it last night, so I was wondering about it. I'm planning on reading through it this week. Thanks!
  7. Is it possible to use just a plain notebook and set it up to look like the response books? I'd rather not have to buy them, but I'm not exactly sure what they should look like in order to set up my own.
  8. Great thread, guys. We're currently reading This Country of Ours, but really it's a little heavy for us. We're all dreading reading it. I'm thinking of supplementing with more picture books and things like that, so this thread has been helpful. Thanks!! And :bigear: for anything else!! rowan
  9. Really? I've never heard of this one. I'll have to Google!
  10. Cool! Thanks. I don't know why that hadn't come up in any of my searches!
  11. Not really in depth. I can't seem to get my hands on a copy to see in person.
  12. I'm looking for something based off of patterns rather than on phonics. Does this exist and have I somehow missed it? TIA
  13. I went and read all about it. Really it sounds almost too good to be true! They have some very detailed information pages on their site--www.simplycharlottemason.com--that truly sound wonderful. It's getting pretty late here, so hopefully tomorrow I'll start the 30 day trial. If it works like it says, then IMO, yes it will be worth the money.
  14. I tried a few searches and didn't see too much, other than the few that say they used it loved it. But very little in the way of specifics. Sigh. I guess I'm going to have to do the free trial.
  15. Bumping up for the evening crowd.... :001_smile:
  16. the CM Organizer by Simply Charlotte Mason? I stumbled across it and wondered if anyone was using it. Any pros/cons? Is it worth the price? Any insights would be appreciated. TIA, rowan
  17. Oh, that is hilarious!! I'm glad to hear what you said about Elemental Science. I was looking for something a little more CM-y and this seemed like it would work. It's going to be mainly for my 2nd grader (she'll be 7 by then), but my soon to be 4 year old will be tagging along. We'll go ahead and probably start with Biology and just be on the upper end of the cycle. I might be able to get the books at the library too, but I've put a call out on Paperback Swap just in case. I am a book hog! :tongue_smilie: Great score on Artistic Pursuits! I've been looking at that for two years! I might be able to get some of the DWR books with Amazon cards from Christmas. And like you said, it does help to see that someone else far from me has come to such similar curriculum decisions!!! :D
  18. I could have written this post!!!!! What we are doing is MEP for math, and a combination of Higher Up Further In and Tanglewood for literature and history. Science is the only one that is up in the air for me. I think I'm going to put my own together based on state standards, but I just discovered Elemental Science. So I'm looking into that. If I have the funds, I'd like to add in Growing with Grammar, Soaring in Spelling and Draw Write Now. But those are extras and not necessary at all.
