  1. Excellent!!! That sounds like exactly what I'm thinking for next year! It's been so nice to see the excitement and fun back for math. It is her weaker subject area, but Fred has brought the whimsy back and she's begging to "play Khan" when her schoolwork is done!! Thanks for the validation!! :)
  2. I think we've "agreed" to two days of MM, two days of LOF and one day of Khan to practice what was covered the other four days. As for what does she like about Khan: she likes that it is on the computer, she likes the way he teaches, and she likes the limited practice. I'd venture to say that she also likes earning the points and badges and such; she can be quite competitive.
  3. HA!!!! I love your beginning!!! My daughter is 9 and just finishing 2nd grade of MM. We had some missteps early on with MUS and with MEP---terrible fits for her and much mathematical angst!! We are currently finishing up MM 2 and working through LOF Apples, with plans to continue in sequence. I wonder if using LOF for topic introduction, MM for procedural introduction and Khan for further practice would work? Just thinking outloud.
  4. Thanks everyone! That's exactly what I needed to know. And thanks for the heads-up on Currclick classes on Khan!!! Definitely will look into that one!
  5. We are considering moving from MM to using LOF and Khan in combination. Is anyone out there doing this? Is this a good match-up? Can anyone explain to me how to use Khan in a homeschool setting? I find the coach's dashboard very difficult to understand, but then I'm not very visual!! Aimee
  6. Ok, bumping up again. Someone, please? Help??
  7. Ok, I know somebody has to use Khan as their only math! :-P Someone??
  8. Hi, Up until this point, we've been using Math Mammoth as our primary math and occasionally supplementing with Khan, mainly for practice purposes. Yesterday my daughter asked if we could do Khan next school year rather than the next MM book. I think I would be ok with this, except I cannot figure out the teacher dashboard!!! I feel like a fool, but it just doesn't make sense to me at all. For those of you using Khan as your primary math, how do you do it???!!! thanks in advance, Aimee
  9. -mixing up sounds in multi-syllabic words -can't master tying shoes -confusion over left versus right, over versus under, before versus after, and other directionality words and concepts -despite listening to stories that contain lots of rhyming words, such as Dr. Seuss, cannot tell you words that rhyme with cat or seat by the age of four-and-a-half -difficulty learning the names of the letters or sounds in the alphabet; -can read a word on one page, but won't recognize it on the next page (using beginner Dolch words) -directionality confusion shows up when reading and when writing: b-d confusion is a classic warning sign. One points to the left, the other points to the right, and they are left-right confused.b-p, n-u, or m-w confusion. One points up, the other points down. That's also directionality confusion. (b-p-d-q-g, w-u-m-n-v-y: are all confused with each other consistently) -When reading a story or a sentence, substitutes a word that means the same thing but doesn't look at all similar, such as trip for journey, fast for speed, or cry for weep -Unusual pencil grip, often with the thumb on top of the fingers (a "fist grip") -Child writes letters with unusual starting and ending points. -Child has great difficulty getting letters to "sit" on the horizontal lines. -Days of the week or months of the year in order (cannot learn after drilling this all school year) -People with dyslexia have an extremely difficult time organizing their belongings. They tend to pile things rather than to organize them and put them away. It is almost as though if they can't see the item (if it is behind a door or in a drawer), they will forget where it is. I have pulled these quotes from http://www.dys-add.com/symptoms.html#preschool. All of the ones that I pulled are things I've noticed with my son over the past 6 years. Also at the bottom of the page, there is a chart of strengths as well. He has exhibited almost every one of those as well. aimee
  10. Hello, My son will be six in May. I suspect that he might be dyslexic. We are working on getting his allergies cleared up to ensure that hearing isn't an issue. I will be pursuing testing for dyslexia with his pediatrician in the near future. My main question is what types of information should I be keeping as records to support my suspicion. I've started keeping a list of the words he mispronounces and the nature of the mispronouncation. Is there anything else that could be necessary? I feel like I'm not being very articulate here. This really is a place I never thought I'd go. To my knowledge, there is no family history on either side of the family. Please ask questions if needed. I realize he is still young and that some of this is developmental. But he has too many of the secondary symptoms for me not to be concerned. thank you in advance, aimee
  11. Thank you, everyone. Thank you so much for suggestions. It's nice to go somewhere and not be dismissed out of hand, just told that he's young yet and it will come. I'll be spending the weekend researching and reading. Thanks again, Aimee
  12. Thank you, everyone. I appreciate your answers greatly. It's nice to go somewhere and not have everyone tell me how young he is and how it will just happen. I'm going to spend some time this weekend looking through the links and researching the various tests mentioned. Again, thank you so much, Aimee
  13. Hello, My 6 year old is struggling greatly with learning to read, both with phonics instruction and sight word instruction. Based on family history and informal observations, I am suspecting some sort of auditory discrimination issues. He passed the hearing test at the pedi's office just fine, but they only test using tones, not words or letter sounds. Is there a test out there that will test a child's ability to hear/understand letter sounds? I feel very at sea here. That may not be the correct question to ask. I do intend on bringing my thoughts up with his pedi, but that won't be for at least a few weeks, as we are deep into Super Bowl and Mardi Gras down here. I was hoping that I could do some research before then, but I frankly don't know what to look for. If you need more information, please ask and I'll do the best I can to answer. I know he is young. I know that he hasn't mastered all of the sounds (th). I know that boys mature later. But my mama instinct says there is more going on here than just second born, class clown boy going on. TIA, Aimee

  15. Thanks so much, everyone!!! Lots of things I'd not heard of before, so I'm off to research. :)
  16. I haven't heard of Jolly Phonics or Dancing Bears, so I'll have to look those up tonight as well. :)
  17. Thank you for the suggestions so far. I will do a tag search later on tonight. I've never heard of Education Unboxed, so I'll be looking into that as well. Anyone have any other ideas, especially for reading? Off for park day!! TIA, Aimee
  18. Bumping up for the night time crew! :hurray:
  19. Hello all, I haven't been to the forums in quite a while, since what we are doing with my daughter is working. But now my son is school age and I have discovered, through research, that he is a VSL. (My daughter and I are not, though we are probably more whole brained than left brained.) What I have been using with my daughter definitely will NOT work for him. I'm looking for suggestions on curricula, especially for reading. We are planning on using Math Mammoth, but are open to other suggestions. Right now he's tagging along in science and history (R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey and various lapbooks for history). Again, I'm open to other suggestions for those subjects as well. But frankly reading has thrown me for a loop. My daughter and I both taught ourselves at such a young age that neither of us remembers a time when we weren't reading (daughter was 2). I am a former teacher, but I was taught to teach reading via phonics. That isn't working so far, and from my readings, it isn't likely to get any better. So, anyone with suggestions for curricula that will help a VSL, please chime in. Or if you have a VSL and know of something that didn't work, please post that too!! It'll cut down on research time! :p Thanks in advance, Aimee
  20. More support group than anything else at this point. We'd like to move eventually to a co-op situation, but we aren't ready for that. We've had some issues with one child/parent combo and are looking to prevent it in the future.
  21. Thanks!! We can really use the help.:001_smile:
  22. Our local group is finally getting to the size/point where we could benefit from posted rules and/or discipline policy. Does anyone have a sample of theirs that they would be willing to share so that we can get an idea of how to proceed with this? Thanks rowan

  24. Well, it's not me, but my daughter is beginning to participate in feisanna. If you have any easy, beginner questions, I might be able to help. :tongue_smilie: rowan
