  1. Thank you! Thank you! I am less stressed about Homer now. :001_smile: Heather, like you, I will be doing JAG in 5th when I begin Homer. I am hoping I can integrate them well. I plan on going through AG myself this summer to help me refresh my grammar skills. I am also a TOG user and fully understand the fog. It helps in knowing that it may take me awhile to adjust to Homer but to stick with it until I understand it well. I am determined to learn and stretch myself to give my children a better education than I got. Now I love to learn and am ready for the challenge! Thanks again for all of your encouragment! I am loving these boards!
  2. Thank you for your encouragment Angelina!! I will just have to buy Homer early and plunge in with determination to figure it out! :001_smile: Hopefully the end result will be that it's not as scary as my mind dreams up.
  3. I can understand Homer!! I just got Aseop and spent the evening pouring through it and am actually understanding it. I LOVE, LOVE it! My fear is Homer from what I have been hearing on the message boards. Please tell me that if I can understand and "get" Aseop that Homer is set up in the same way to understand it. KWIM??? I know it is harder, but are the instructions detailed enough like they are in Aseop to "get" it?? I know I shouldn't be worried about Homer now, but I am a visionary and next year scares me! :crying:
  4. My aunt got this shot for her daughter who was a junior in High School because it was strongly recommended. Within a few weeks she was hospitilized for a month. It made her blood vessels expand and leak. Her kidneys were not functioning well either. She had to be put on a steroid and couldn't walk without pain for over 6 months. She is now able to walk okay but her kidneys are taking their time to heal. Her doctor wrote the cause as the "gardisil Vacc".
  5. Is LTOW something that I could go through myself to learn the writing process before my children are at that stage???? I am weak in writing but I don't want to learn it with my children but stay ahead of them. I am planning to use Analytical Grammar to help but still deciding what writing curriculum is best to teach me correct sentence structure. Weighing going through CW. Now hearimg your explanation about LTOW..... Thank you!
  6. Thank you! I remember reading VP's recommendation and was planning on doing levels 1 through 4, then skip 5. However, my son is flying through it easily and is not challenged. I believe I will skip to level 4 with him now. Thank you so much, you saved me time and money!
  7. We have been doing CC at home for two years now and loving it. I am actually starting a class up in my area this fall and very excited about adding more support and encouragement to our homeschool. I too wanted to do CC but the closest class was an hour away so I opted to do it at home. For fifth grade, you can purchase the foundations guide, memory work CD, and memory cards to do memory work. She would do Essentials as well and they use a grammar program similar to Shurley English and IEW. I would also propose to consider tutoring. That would enable you to afford the cost and then some! Talk to your local Director.
  8. I just saw on a recent post (I didn't want to change topics on that thread) where you said you can skip Shurley levels. You mentioned levels 2,4,6,7 or 3,5,7. Does that mean the levels we can skip or the levels that we do? I hope that makes sense what I am asking. I have done level 1 and am finishing up level two in about a month, do I skip level 3 and continue with 4, then follow with levels 6 & 7? Thank you! :)
  9. I have taught two children with SSRW and absolutely love it!!! I have many friends that use it as well and the results are amazing. My 8 year old whizzed through it and is reading on an 8th grade level and now my 5 year old is just completing it with no problems. We love the songs that go with it and it helps the kids remember the phonics rules and it is easy to teach. It is worth the money IMO. I will continue to use this with my other children. I think it depends on the personality of your child.
  10. Oh, forgot to add that I hope to see you at the Feb. 20th Open House. It is one thing to go to a meeting, but quite another to see it in action! :)
  11. For CC, you can go on their website at www.classicalconversations.com and click on Oklahoma and then click on "view events" under Oklahoma calendar. They also have informational meetings on April 6th and May 9th at the Hardesty Library there in Tulsa. There are two other new CC classes starting up in Bartlesville and Owasso in the fall that will have info meetings happening soon but no dates set yet.
  12. Books by G.A. Henty; Kingdom Series by Black and The Terrestrial Chronicles series by Ed Dunlop.
  13. and I wholeheartedly agree!! My husband is the big math and science guy at our home and he teaches those subjects to the kids. He mentioned the exact same thing!! He wants to continue teaching them math at home. Did you know you can choose to opt out of different subjects in the Challenge courses? You could just enroll your children in the debate, rhetoric, exposition and research classes and not the math class. You will not have to pay full price either. I will be offering a "study hall" classroom where students can go to do homework during the class where they opt out of. Someone else more experienced may be able to explain it better on here but from what I have heard, CC doesn't want to take the responsibility of teaching off from you, they just want to support you providing accountability. That is what I LOVE about it! I am still their primary teacher the other four days of the week helping them with their work. I wouldn't be doing CC if that role was taken from me. HTH! :)
  14. I had never heard of MAFA (probably wouldn't since I am in Bville) so I went to their website to check it out. It looks like a very good program. Both MAFA and CC have different focuses so it really depends on what areas you would need the most support in. I know the stress though....I don't like it when I have TOO many good choices! :001_smile: Are you still going to the CC Open House Feb. 20th? It would be neat to meet those that I know through the WTM boards!
  15. I definately wrote down your email because I am sure I will be emailing you soon!! Especially since you will be the closest Director to me! I have emailed Cyndi a few times and she has been MORE than helpful! Right now, I have many questions that I wrote down for when Jennifer comes to do our Info meeting. Are you having one in Owasso? It is great to know that I, as a Director, will have a great support group as well!
  16. Hi Linda in Owasso! We met at an info meeting a couple of years ago when your Asbury group was beginning. I loved CC but didn't want to make the hour drive every week. I am excited however to Direct a new group we will be starting this fall in Bville! I am sure I will be seeing you at training! We are excited. It is an awesome program! A group of us also plan to come to the Open House Feb. 20 to check it out. This is actually my first post on WTM boards. I usually just read. It is so neat to see so many Okies on here! Laura
