  1. Currently it's "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC, as DS has been watching "Planes: Fire and Rescue." Last weekend we played around with learning the opening sequence on guitar, as DS wanted the music to be playing as he pretended to have his Smokejumper figures jump out of a plane - LOL!
  2. Deb, thanks for posting the details of your journal. You've given me more ideas for tweaking mine ;)
  3. I've been using mine daily since June, and can't be without it! I invested in a leather travelers notebook from Etsy, and I keep three Moleskine Cahier notebooks in it. I use a gridded Cahier for the bullet journal (primarily to do and planning lists), and ruled Cahiers for a commonplace book and an "Inquire Within" book (family and household management notes). I like the idea of using the washi tape to make tabs.
  4. I'm probably not going to do much self-ed for the next couple of weeks, as we have family visiting from out of town. However I will start reading "Consider This," as it just arrived in the mail. I can't just sit and look at it for two weeks without cracking it open! :drool5:
  5. So far I've gotten two letters from the state organization for one of the two major political parties (trying to not make this a blue/red issue). Neither of them have identified the voting history of my neighbors. The first one states that they are "disappointed by the inconsistent voting of many of your neighbors," and indicates that I have been "selected to participate in a survey about the voting experience and how to make it better. We may call you after the November 4th election to ask you about your polling place. You may want to take notes about your polling place, the type of machine you use, etc." The second letter that I received today repeats the "disappointed by the inconsistent voting" language of the first letter, then goes on to state "After the election is over, we will be reviewing the X County official voting records to determine whether you supported your neighbors and community in 2014 by voting. If you do not vote this year, we will be interested to hear why you let your community down by failing to vote." Early voting started this week in my state, but I prefer to wait until Election Day to vote. I'm curious to see how many of these letters that I will receive by then, and if the shaming tone will escalate as we get closer to Election Day.
  6. Today I finally accomplished something on my list! I did Wk7Day2 of C25K, and listened to lecture #4 of the Historical Jesus course. I've tried to do my reading multiple times in the past few days, and just.cannot.concentrate. So, I gave myself a break and wrote it into my planner that I am taking the week off of self-ed reading. We're struggling with getting a full day of school in this week as well - today was the first day that we succeeded.
  7. I'm having a little bit of a counter-productivity issue as well, just because I have to stop being productive to post my progress (and possibly get distracted by other threads), but I'm liking the accountability part of it enough to stick with it for a little bit longer. Plus, I get so many great ideas for self-ed by seeing what everyone else is doing! I'm glad that you've gotten some clarity on what is most helpful for you :)
  8. Last week was a bit light for me at the end, due to a clingy, whiny three-year-old. He's still showing some of that behavior, so my goals for this week may be too lofty: C25K x 3 Yoga x 2 Reading rotation x 5 Khan Academy x 4 Audio lectures x 3 We are also supposed to have sunny and slightly cooler weather this week, so I'm hoping that we'll get some outside time. What are the rest of you planning for this week?
  9. I was dealing with a clingy three-year old at the end of last week, so self-ed went on the back burner. Hopefully this week will be better. I didn't see a new thread for this week - am I overlooking it, or shall I go ahead and start one?
  10. I have categories of things that I am reading/studying, and I rotate through them with a different subject each day. At this stage of my children's ages/abilities I am pretty limited in my study time, so my goal is to get at least 30 minutes of reading daily. I currently have five categories in my reading rotation (parenting, education - book, education - articles and blogs, spiritual, and classics), so I'm reading something from each of them weekly. In addition I also listen to audio lectures while running. I would like to add the Well-Educated Mind studies back into my rotation, as that dropped out during my son's first year, but we're in a temporary living situation right now and those books are packed away in a storage unit. I'm putting that on my "when we get a house" list :D
  11. Progress so far this week: * C25K 1/3 * Yoga 1/4 * Daily devotional reading - daily, so far * Reading rotation 2/5 (today I read half of Ch. 6 in Simplicity Parenting, yesterday was "catch up on educational blogs and articles day") * Audio lectures 1/3 I also have continued to play around with Khan Academy for math. I'm still mucking around with the elementary levels so that I can get DD started using it.
  12. So "dust bunnies" is a euphemism for dragons? (or maybe they are like the killer rabbits in Monty Python and the Holy Grail?)
  13. Well, I was going to add my weekend accomplishments to last weeks thread, but it seems to have gone "poof!" We were out of town most of the weekend, but I did listen to lectures 2 and 3 of the Historical Jesus course while driving. Goals for this week: * C25K 3 times (did Wk6Day3 this morning) * Yoga 4 times * Daily devotional reading (done today) * Reading rotation 5 times * Audio lectures 3 times (did first half of lecture 3 in the Intro to Orthodoxy series today; I plan to finish that one and do one more Historical Jesus lecture this week) I feel like I'm forgetting something, but today is our Monday as DH had Columbus Day off, so maybe I should just focus on what I have listed here. I got distracted while writing the above because DS just picked up the vacuum cleaner wand, held it like a lance, and announced, "I'm St. George, Mommy, and I'm going to go fight the dragon."
  14. I "liked" your post, but not the part about being sick. I hope that you feel better soon! :grouphug:
  15. Just this morning I finally explained to DD that "panty" in 21st century America refers to girl underwear, because she and DS have been repeating the lines from "Five Children and It" where the baby keeps calling the oldest girl "Panty." I've asked her not to say those parts of the book outside the house. I had "Swallows and Amazons" on our list for a few years down the road, but now I'm seriously reconsidering...
  16. Weekend update: * Exercise: completed Week 5 of C25K! * Listened to first 30 minutes of Intro to Orthodoxy, lecture 2 * Made a small dent in catching up on educational articles/blogs. DH will be gone this evening, so I'm going to prep for school this week, do some personal care (facial and mani/pedi), and do a little light reading. Self-ed will resume tomorrow :)
  17. Liking your post wasn't enough - I had to highlight this sentence. I feel the same way!
  18. Updating yesterday's goals above. For this weekend I plan to do C25K Wk5 Day 3, start listening to lecture 2 in the Intro to Orthodoxy series, and catch up on educational blogs and articles. Otherwise we're focusing on lots of family time, as DH will be out of town for three days next week, and hopefully making some decisions about our "where to live" dilemma.
  19. Yesterday's work listed above - I forgot to do evening yoga. Done today: * Exercise: C25K Wk5Day2 (I'm a bit nervous about going from Day2 to Day3. It's a big jump from an 8 minute run to a 20 minute run!) * Daily devotional reading * Listened to the first lecture in the Historical Jesus course To Do: * Read "Tegner's Drapa" from Tales Before Narnia * Yoga - hopefully morning and evening. DD is pushing me to do yoga with her, so that's a good reminder and motivation.
  20. I grew up in the Pacific NW, although I now live in the South. The high temp/high humidity combo makes me wilt! We spent the previous seven years in SC, and I said that the correct name for summer there was "hell."
  21. Done today: * Exercise: C25K Wk5Day1, a little bit of yoga with DD * Daily devotional reading * Listened to the second half of Lecture 1 in the Intro to Orthodoxy series To Do: * Read the Preface of "Mere Christianity" * More yoga
  22. Done yesterday: * Exercise: BFBM and yoga * Daily devotional reading * Second half of chapter 4 in "Simplicity Parenting" Done today: * Daily devotional reading * Chapter 7 in "Towards a Philosophy of Education" I got a flu shot Monday evening, and as usual it made me feel slightly unwell for a day or so. I wasn't feeling good when I went to bed last night, and that made it too easy to turn off my alarm and go back to sleep this morning instead of getting up to exercise. I realized today that DH will be out of town for several days at the beginning of next week, so I need to get my running in over the next four days to make up for when he is gone. We take turns running so that one of us is home with the kids. My goal is to complete Week 5 of Couch to 5K by Sunday. We are having "Backwards Day" today. Our water was shut off for a couple of hours this morning, so we switched our day around to get out of the house in the morning and do school in the afternoon. DD thinks that this is lots of fun :)
