  1. I was a middle school and high school Spanish teacher. I really like Duolingo. As a free app it is really good at teaching pronunciation and vocabulary. I don't know what to recommend because I can use regular Spanish texts to teach with. Just my 2 cents on Duolingo.
  2. i keep going back an forth and I would love to hear what some other moms (and dads) would do in this situation. I may stay the course anyway, but still would be nice to hear some other points of view. I began an American History course for high schoolers with my 8th grader. (She needed the challenge.) She started mid-year because she went to 6th grade half a year in public school and we kept having to start our new curriculums in January. Fast forward to next year. I have been adding to the curriculum to make it more interesting and fill in blanks (I LOVE history), but she is only about 1/3 of the way through the curriculum and school ends in 2 weeks. Most high schools do American History after American Government in 10th or 11th grade. So, should I put her on hold and just do the curriculum again in a couple of years or push forward. She is mature and we talk about politics and history often in our house, but do you think she needs some more perspective until we continue on? I can always go to a good World History curriculum... Thanks!!!
  3. I have been using Math Mammoth for 3 years. I like Math Mammoth, but I think a change is due-- especially for my busy, can't sit still 5 minutes soon to be 2nd grader. Maybe she will just have to learn to sit still, but any Math curriculums you just LOVE. I have found other curriculums I love, but not a math one. I do like Saxon Math for my not too mathy older kids. My older 2 do Saxon and I have liked the ease of understanding the material, because I have to explain quite a bit. One is freaking out about fractions as we speak. Lol.
  4. Thanks all. I know there are many Algebra 2 curriculums. I also know that many people dislike Saxon strongly. I have just found Saxon to work for my not so mathy kids. The review really helps them review and know the concepts. If I had a mathy kid we would go a different route. I will look up AoPS.
  5. I'm getting things ready for next year. My 9th grader will be in Saxon Algebra 2. I'm guessing the curriculum alone would not be an honors course. Any ideas on how I could make it an honors course? Thanks!!
  6. This is absolutely overwhelming to me. My daughter is starting high school next year and I was thinking of making her US History an AP class, but I'm not sure I have time to put a syllabus together with all the things the little ones need. Will it make a huge difference on her high school transcript if I do an Honors class and if we feel up to it take the exam and if it's a good grade put it on the transcript?
  7. I want to work with my daughter to prepare for the Spanish AP exam. I taught high school Spanish a long time ago and I can still teach, but I don't know what level to teach to for the exam. Is there a way to teach to the AP exams or do you just have to sign up for the courses online? I'm also trying to save a little money-- all those APs are expensive!!!
  8. Thanks again so very much. I need those hugs. I will keep looking for a way to have her tested. I have another child that STRUGGLES with math and I would like her tested too. So, I won't give up trying :) Happy New Years to all!! And thanks ever so much!
  9. Thank you all for your replies! You have each supplied me with so much to go on. I was leaning toward Barton before, but just didn't want to put AAS aside if that may work better. I will do a little more studying and decide. I have not had her tested, but feel very certain from reading and studying that she is mildly to moderately dyslexic. I have struggled with whether to have her tested or not because it is so very expensive where I live and insurance won't cover it (about $2000). She does pretty well in math and can memorize math facts and oral-auditory facts. Her struggle is mainly reading and spelling which she is in 3rd grade and right below a 3rd grade reading level. So, whatever is going on it is not sever. I just want to help her along and get her to read more confidently. Many of the public school teachers I speak with her do not believe in dyslexia and her tutor does not think she is dyslexic. I guess that is a big part of my problem. I believe that it is very obvious that the child is dyslexic and it kills me that they are sweeping it under the rug. I'm thinking about having her tested by someone trained in dyslexia and not a child psychiatrist-- much less expensive, but will that find the root of the problem? So many questions and it is not always easy to get all the answers. I will definitely try some the books on dyslexia. I think it just becomes overwhelming with 4 kids and each so different with different needs. Happy New Year to all :)
  10. i have a 3rd grader who has been struggling with reading for a long time. She is a little below grade level now. She has been working with the reading specialist from the local elementary school and it has brought her up a little, but I really haven't seen the significant changes that I think I should see with all the tutoring she has been receiving. I would do a Barton teacher, but they are all at least a 30 minute drive and I have 4 kids to work with and teach. So... Is All About Reading similar to Barton? Can anyone out there compare? Thanks!!
  11. Last year before I bought Writing and Rhetoric I was sent a coupon code for 20% off any order, but I haven't seen one for this year. Did I miss it? Thanks!
  12. I'm at a loss. I need help!! What do you like? Why? I would like some music history that's fun and easy-- we already do lessons. And I'd like a fun art DVD curriculum. Anyone have something they love?
  13. Try teachers pay teachers. You have to buy some of their products, but some teachers off freebies. I was a Spanish teacher and the Spanish worksheets and whatnot are easy to navigate... My kids love learning Spanish!
  14. Which do you think is better-- DIVE or Art Reed DVDs for Saxon math? And why? Thanks!
  15. What is the name of the website that does a pay as much as you want sale one a year or something? I need to find something on there and cannot remember the name of the website. :) Shannon
  16. Have any of you used All About Spelling? Would I use that as a phonics curriculum or would you recommend using Phonics Pathways too? I have a dyslexic child in 2nd grade that is really struggling and I think starting over with Phonics would be helpful.
  17. I can't find out what's on it. Anyone out there used it and can give me a description? Thanks!
  18. Does it matter? Is the newer addition better? Thanks!
  19. They have BW stuff on sale at the Homebuyersco-op right now... https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/brave-writer/
  20. I just started homeschooling this year. I need a math curriculum for next year. My daughter will be going into 7th grade. She is a bright student and can be good at math with a little prodding, but does not naturally gravitate that way. I have started LoF with her-- pre-algebra series. She is finishing 6th year math mammonth with LoF. I was thinking of continuing the rest of LoF pre-algebra and starting Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1. I need something that I don't have to go through everything with her. I have 3 younger kids-- 2 that need a lot of help-- learning disabilities. And one learning to read. So, no small tasks going on here. I have heard the TT is not as vigorous as some other math curriculums, but I like that they can be independent in one of my weaker subjects. If I am supplementing with LoF does that help with the vigor. Is there another math program where they can be independent in Algebra and the higher maths? I am looking for opinions, so have at it. I can handle the good, bad and the ugly. And I don't need anything for the lower grades. I like MM with LoF. But, you can give opinions there too if you want ;)
  21. This has been a LONG time, but what could I use instead of parafilm? I looked on amazon and it is really expensive. Thanks!
  22. I love my kids and I have loved homeschooling them. Luckily, I started homeschooling with my 9 and 6 year olds, who listen to me for the most part and have worked hard. In December my 12 year old 6th grader started homeschooling. She has always been in gifted programs, but almost never has homework. She makes A/Bs and it just seems to come natural. Honestly, she doesn't have to work hard for good grades and doesn't like to put in extra. I warned her that I was going to be a more challenging teacher than she is used to. Well, here we are day 3 and she does not want to do her assignments. "They're too hard... I don't understand... I won't do that..." I know she just needs time to adjust and to see this is homeschool and I'm not backing down, but I needed to vent. And it's not too hard. I have reviewed stuff one on one with her and she gets it, but she wants me to do it for her. Ugh. Ok, vent over. I love my kids ;)
