  1. I would like to learn Latin for myself only. Well the kids can tag along if they want to but I'm not setting any goals. I've always wanted to learn Latin but where do I start? There are so many different curriculum out there but where would an adult start? I would like something ecclesiastical and doesn't take up too much time daily. Any suggestions??
  2. I've been using this for French and it's been great. Reminds me of Rosetta Stone but way better. All as app download on the iPad. I watch for proper conversations during the "Bots" sections to judge how well things are progressing. Anyone else using DuoLingo??
  3. Oh that's good to know that it's low prep.... that is what I was curious about too.... how much time per kid? How long does a lesson per day take you?
  4. I have a grade 5 & 7.... what books would be good to start then with in W&R?? This style is new to us, we're more of the IEW or BJU last couple years. Also,, can I pick a " middle" book and do it together as a group??
  5. Here's a great Kinder checklist, for those not wanting curriculum http://www.readingkey.com/demo/Files/CD-k/tests/Curric-K.pdf
  6. We looked at TOP as well, but there was just too much work needed to pull everything together. I started checking out My Fathers World. Sort of similar in that it's a unit study type and multi-level, but way less work involved for the teacher and they include all the books you need....we're in the midst of trying to choose :0)
  7. Our son turned 5 in November and still has a lot of trouble printing single letters of the alphabet....he can do 3 or 4 of them almost legibly. He's learning the sounds of each letter fine, just can't print....all our other kids could print at age 4-5 ish. Anyone have any advice on how to help him form his written work? Also, he can't draw things like happy faces, etc either..... (??)
  8. I'm assuming most people here are American, but I thought I'd try a shot in the dark, lol. Has anyone ever used this book for History? I really do like the way it's set up, we could do notebooking or lapbooks, etc. Anyway, if anyone knows of a place I could go to glean what others have done using this book or could refer me to a person they know who has used it, I would truly appreciate it :0) Thanks!
  9. Oh! Sorry everyone, I meant just for LA.....we're still doing math & reading living books for science/history,etc. The Abeka handbook & readers seem to cover all phonics, reading comprehension, and basic skills like rhyming, compound words, syllables, etc. Then I figured our copywork would do the trick for handwriting, spelling, and simple grammar. Does that sound okay?
  10. We've been using the Abeka Reading Handbook, Grade1 readers and copywork-dictation using the reader story....that's it. Is that enough for grade 1? We had been using the McGuffy';s but the kids got bored of them :0(
  11. Hi Everybody...I'm relatively new to this forum, so I was't sure if this is the place to put this, but our family ministry has set up a challenge to anyone who wants to participate...to read through the entire New Testament in 30 days! If you're up for it, we're starting on FEB. 1st. The reading guide and information is listed on our ministry website. www.gospelofpeace.net We've also set up a blog for people to comment and connect as we go through. (We thought of Facebook, but not everyone is set up for it) Blessings and hope to see you there!
  12. We ve sometimes supplemented with easy grammar.
  13. My boys were the same until I started doing daily dictation. Spelling workbooks seemed to be fun but there was no "transfer" into daily writing.
  14. We've used LLATL off and on for years....from red book to the green book. Which level are you attempting? We always did the book studies as we came across them in the book. They would read the entire book, then do the report portion listed in the workbook. Did you mean the actual book reports or what's written for them to read as they go through their lessons? We never read the entire books of the portions that were listed for lessons. Just used what they had in the workbook. Hmmm. that sounds a bit confusing, sorry if that makes things worse, lol :0)
  15. Does language lessons teach actual writing? I know they have grammar and spelling from copywork, etc. Do they eventually teach how to write an essay or business letter? I noticed lots on poetry though. Thanks!
  16. Ok so for example.... We'll have a grades, k,1,3,8,10 plus a preschooler and a 1 yr old hanging off my hip next year. :) What would MFW look like time wise with those grades? I'm off to check out Tapestry of Grace too Thanks guys!
  17. I am seriously burnt out....anyone know of something that I can use successfully with ALL my kids...grades k-9. I looked at MFW / HOD / Sonlight....but most of them only bridge the gap between 2 - 3 years....I need something truly K-9 where we can do everything but Math together. We've used random things here and there (classical/charlotte mason-ish) and Student Of the Word, but it's just taking too much time to get everything done! I feel like I'm drowning and the kids are not happy at all, I move from one check list to the next hoping to tweek things to fit, but what I really want is a K-9 program that can include ALL of k-9.....that is, if there IS such a thing, lol.
  18. We just started using the first reader for my 7yo. Someone please let me know if we are doing overkill though, since I am new at the whole mcguffy thing....they are all we use as of now, except for free style journal entries and trying to reading his Bible Mon...reads one lesson story and copies it verbatim into notebook Tues....go over story spelling list, any punctuation rules in story, re-read story aloud Wed....go over spelling list one last time, I give dictation using the story Thurs....work is corrected if any mistakes in spelling, grammar, penmanship & he draws a picture at the bottom representing the story. We start the next story next week. I guess eventually I could ask him to diagram a couple sentences from the story ?? I noticed that the later readers have more comprehension questions, etc.
