  1. I am planning on using the new Easy Grammar for high school with my dd. She reads and writes constantly so I just want to keep her skills sharp. We have done IEW and will be switcing to Wordsmith and Wordsmith Craftsman. My dd is in a writing club which helps. We also have 2 friends who are authors so they do some mentoring with the girls. We are keeping it simple but have high expectations. Ann :lurk5:PUtting this in because my youngest likes it!
  2. I can't find one that isn't expired. DH wants to buy me a Zojurushi bread machine for MOther's Day and they have it. The 20% off would be great; all I have is a $5 off. Anyone have a code to share? I don't know if there will be one in the paper tomorrow. Thanks, Ann
  3. I am looking at Quest for the Ancient World 4/6. It looks intriguing and I like the book list. I feel confident enought to adjust as needed as well as deal with service issues. Thanks! Ann
  4. I've learned saying no is a noble thing and I say it proudly and often! Ann
  5. The good, the bad and the ugly. thanks, Ann
  6. in a coop. My oldest has done Apologia General Science but we are doing RS4k so she can get experience writing lab reports. I am on the yahoo group and originally thought we would start her with Level 2 but the members suggested using Level 1 because of the advanced terminology. I was skeptical until a friend of mine who is in our coop and a practicing physician, saw the Level 1 Biology and was amazed at what was covered in such a small book. So you may want to do all of Level 1 and you would still have a year. After RS4K my oldest will probably go back to Apologia and the 2 younger ones, who will be upper junior high, will do Rainbow Science.
  7. My oldest will be in 8th grade next year and doing History Odyssey. She is on track to start the 3d rotation of history in 9th grade. Will she get enough of an overview of US History and Government to fulfill her requirements for college? She has become very interested in politics and we have a wealth of Landmark Books for supplemental work. Also, my 2 youngest dd's would probably enjoy something like Winter Promise better. If we stayed with them would they also satisfy high school US History and Government requirements? Thanks, Ann
  8. We are still in Algebra I with my 12 yo dd. Even taking her time, she has time to get geometry in before college boards. I know many people who do not like to teach geometry too early as the logic part is a maturity thing. YMMV. I am having my dd do some logic before we hit geometry Ann
  9. and am now Lutheran (Wisconsin Synod). I Have always said a Creed. So many churches that do not like creeds do have a "Statement of Beliefs" which is, in fact, a creed, just not the Apostle's, Nicene or Athanasian. I think the aversion to those 3 main creeds is an anti-Catholic backlash. I see this backlash disappearing. Most of my family is Catholic and many attend churches which focus on salvation by Grace and not works righteousness. As Lutherans, we are liturgical and follow the order of the church year, just like the Catholics, but with a strong emphasis on Grace and the Bible. I notice a huge interest among my Evangelical friends in Advent and Lent and what they are. These have no "magical" powers, they are just times to help us focus on things in the church and it's history and why we do what we do. I think as the anti-Catholic bias disappears, we will see more acceptance of things once considered off limits by many Protestants. As for non-believers, there are hypocrites in every denomination and only God can judge the heart. I honestly have no idea if someone's outward actions are to make themselves feel good or are a genuine response to the love of the Lord. I just take everyone at face value and leave the rest to Him. 10. I will check out Illuminations. I did order the craft cd for MOH from Rainbow. It is supposed to have projects and notebook pages. I'll do the first year of MOH and see how it goes. I also do belong to the yahoo group. I just haven't explored all the options there. I think my main concern is with my 11 yo. we should be done with volumes I-III before the final volume of MOH comes out. I would like to move her into History Odyssey for high school. My oldest is doing the final 2 volumes of Level 2 to prepare for the high school program and I am wondering if MOH will prepare my middle dd for the high school HO program. Also, while my dc have an overview of American history, we haven't covered it per se. My oldest will get some with HO before high school, and I will have time to cover it with my youngest before high school, but my middle one will have to wait until it is covered in HO high school.
  11. I will be doing MOH 1 with my dd's, ages 11 and 9, next year. I know WP uses the book as it's spine. I really like the looks of WP, and, while I can do the library and used books, it will still be pricey. Is it worth doing to enhance MOH or not? I have not seen the Guide for WP, so I would be buying sight unseen. They will not be at our convention. I just hear such wonderful things about their program. Thanks, Ann
  12. on my bikini line and it worked great. I had to do it a couple of times but once the initial waxing is done I expect maintenance to be easy. It can be used on short, fine hair.
  13. I'd say $400-$500 per child and I have 3. It gets more expensive as they get older. My oldest is 12 and she will be doing science outside the house next year. We also do swimming, piano, and fencing. My 9 yo will be doing Mad Science next year. My friends and I share resources and that cuts down on expenses. DH and I figure we won't scrimp on the girls' education and we still come out ahead of where we'd be if they were in a private school. Ann
  14. Jesus's first public miracle involved alcohol. If you have a personal conviction against alcohol that is one thing. If you are around someone who is an alcoholic you should try to support them by not drinking. The Bible condemns drunkeness, not alcohol. This seems a bit legalistic.
  15. I heard someone say you either sing that song or you nail it because you own it. Susan Boyle definitely owns it. After seeing the audience's and judges' reactions before and after, I hope they are eating some serious humble pie.
  16. Hi. I'm Ann. I wanted to introduce myself and hope this is the right place. I have popped in on this board for several years to get information and never joined. DH and I homeschool 3 girls, ages 12, 11, and 9. We have always homeschooled and, unless things change, plan to go all the way through. I've always enjoyed the information I get on this board and am looking forward to participating on it. Ann
  17. Hi! I'm Ann and I'm new here. I actually joined in November and am just now posting. I know snickelfritz from another board (if you remember me I am Norwegian Blue). We are in Edmond. I notice most of you are in the Tulsa area. Anyone else in my neck of the woods? Ann
