  1. You need to call a water damage remediation company immediately.  They should come out today and work to remove the water and set up drying fans .  Time is of the essence. They can advise you regarding the furnace and vents.  Find someone who can come to your house ASAP.  Your insurance agent may be able to recommend a company.

I am so sorry you are going through this.  I am still traumatized by the sewage back up we had 2 years ago.

  2. Are you in Seattle or very close? Aspiring Youth social groups or Outdoors for All could be possibilities.  I would definitely look into Special Olympics.

I agree that part of the issue is likely a lack of common interests.  Some things that might help - is she into Tik Toks and memes? I know memes are nonliteral and therefore hard, but Tik Toks are super popular.  You can restrict inappropriate Tik Tok content at some level in the "digital well being" setting.

Try popular shows like The Voice, the great British bake off or other game shows, or local televised sports so she has something to chat about with other people that doesn't require following a complicated plot.

You take a warm coat and a hat with you for a day at the beach.
You have mastered the art of doing everything in the rain, because, well, Washington.

You get a little twitchy if it's been more than a week since it last rained.

In Washington we don't change our plans, we change our clothes!

  4. I strongly believe that intelligent people should always be open to new information, wisdom gained via personal or vicarious experiences, and scientific progress and change their thinking to include all new information (even if it doesn't ultimately change their position). I reserve the right to change my mind at any time!  If we don't change we fossilize.

  5. Ahoy from age 50. 😂  It's pretty great here.

Your job here is to start building interests that do not revolve around your kids.  I love being a mom and I loved homeschooling my kids (now 20, 18, and 14), but this gig does not last forever. I would be 100% down for grandchildren like Stacey, but that probably won't happen for several years yet.  Do you have any elders in your family that you admire?  How did they spend their middle years?

I went back to school at age 45 and was the oldest one in my classes (even older than all but one professor).  It was fine and I feel like I was able to be an example of "Always keep learning" for my kids and my classmates  (who could have been my kids, LOL).  I am now working full time and I am older than most of my peers in a young field, but my life experience as a parent and homeschooling mom has helped me tremendously. My life did not end when my kids grew up. If you don't get this particular job you interviewed for, you will get a different one if you allow yourself to keep moving forward.  I don't recommend bringing a new person into the world simply because you are loose ends, but puppies are fun. 😊

If everything continues to go right for you, you will be alive and healthy for the next 50 years or so. You can't live 50 years reminiscing about your early parenting years and how cute your kids were when they were little.  It's unfair to them and to you. Time to get out there and focus on your own development.

    Best wishes to you!

  6. Hugs to you.  Birthdays for my kids give me a lot of anxiety; this kind of thing is hard for me to deal with too. You still have a few days to pull the gifts together - can you order them online?  I would ask DD to follow up on guests who have not RSVPed (my kids do it themselves at that age) but offer to call any mom who is wary of an unfamiliar family. It's not too late to invite more people too!  Good luck!
