  1. In Texas, that 6 drop limit doesn't apply to courses dropped before the census date and it doesn't apply to dual credit classes either.

I didn't consider the added cost of the partial refund for classes dropped before the census date. It didn't really apply to my older girls because they had full tuition scholarships and their school charges per credit hour only up to 15 credit hours. Anything you sign up for at UTD beyond 15 credit hours is free.

This is much better that what I was told by my daughter's dual credit advisor.  It's more like what I would have called a withdrawal not a drop when I was in college.  I didn't investigate further since my DD is still a dual credit student.

  2. Public colleges and universities in Texas have a 6 drop maximum for the first 4 years.   I was shocked to find out about this policy.  When I was in college, I thought nothing about dropping classes.  Thankfully, this rule doesn't apply to dual credit students such as my daughter.

  3. If you live in a humid climate, be careful to check the water level even if the unit is auto-evaporative.  I bought a portable unit a couple of years ago that was not auto-evaporative and it didn't have a way to check the water level.  You can imagine the mess when the water container overflowed.  Emptying the unit was hard for me as well.  I've been told that the auto-evaporative units can overflow in very humid areas as well.  We returned the portable unit and replaced it with a window one.

  4. Okay, I called the College Board back just now.  The agent today told me we would have access to the June 6th scores and if we felt our students had been affected negatively we would have until Sept. 3rd to request a fee waiver for the Oct. test.  I wish the College Board would get agents on the same page!  But this is much better.

  5. I hope the agent didn't know what he was talking about!  I noticed today that the College Board website notes that the deadline is in September to request the fee waiver.  We should be able to see the scores by next week.  Maybe we will be able to obtain the fee waiver and see the June 6th scores.

  6. If they don't know you will be cleaning the room, I would not talk about any of the cleaning issues for a couple of days after they return.  My mom used to confront me about something she didn't like as soon as I walked into the door.  It turned what should have been a joyous, fun moment into something I would dread.

  7. Also don't forget depending on where you live and the size of the pool, you may need a city permit.  My neighbors found out the hard way after getting a strongly worded letter from the city.

  8. I curious if those who believe as Christians we should not defend ourselves or others, are you against having a police force and a military?  It seems wrong to me that to want the police and military to do what we will not rather than what we cannot do for ourselves.

I believe Jesus calls us to be peacemakers not necessarily pacifists.  Regardless all the marital arts programs that I've know teach using the least force to defend yourself  not to harm the other person.

  9. Don't bother emailing.  They'll send you a message to call 866-756-7346 option 8 on the automated system.  According to the agent who talked with me, we can request a waiver for the Oct. test fee through June 30th.  However, if you ask for a waiver, the scores from the June 6th test will not be made available.  I expected as much since that would be fair.

My daughter is out of town this week so I'll take with her when she returns.  I suspect she'll want to see the June 6th test scores anyway.  So likely no waiver for us.

  10. I checked the SAT website today for any updates for the June 6th testing situation.  The College Board will waive the fee for the October test date for students who feel they were affected negatively by the timing issues.  Not ideal, but as fair as it can be.

I was happy originally to hear that the scores would be considered valid, but my daughter is upset because she feels she did well on the two 20 minute sections.  I emailed the College Board today to ask about the fee waiver.  We'll see what they say.

  11. We are committed Christians and I think much of what this article discusses doesn't apply to karate the way it is taught in this country.  My first reaction is this ridiculous, but I'm trying to be nice this week.

ETA:  I studied Karate several years ago and my 14 yo DD is working on her black belt.

  12. Thanks everybody!  Reading the responses has helped me be strong in my objections to this trip.  My daughter and I spent a long time talking last night.  She has agreed not to go alone, but we'll try to find a way to visit sometime this year after we're able to save some money.  I would like to meet him in his natural environment.  One of my concerns is that he seems to be a true loner - not just introverted.  I'm introverted so I understand that.  Anyway, we're going to take one step at a time.  Frankly, I'm praying that she meets a wonderful young man IRL.

I'm going to be checking all the social media sites they frequent; that's a great idea, and I'm shocked at myself that I didn't think to do it sooner.  Even though my DD is 18, she and I agreed last night that growing up is a process not a specific age.  She's mature usually, but this shows me she's got some more growing up to do.  She's involved in several activities, but most stop or at least slow down during the summer.  She and I are looking for fun ways for her to occupy her time in addition to her job.  So all's good for now!  And I thought being a parent of toddlers was hard!

  13. I gave a wrong impression about the family.  When they visited this area, it was the dad, grandfather and the young man.  But he lives with his mom, dad and sister.  Even with women in the house, I am concerned that she doesn't know anyone very well.

I'm at work but will be checking back.  I appreciate all comments.  I'm trying to work through this transition period since she turned 18.  Some bad decisions don't not long lasting consequences, but some do.  I want her to be wise.
