  1. I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but it came in my Inbox just a few minutes ago. http://www.statehistory.net/
  2. I hear ya. I disliked the 6 as well, but we stuck with all books through cursive, and it was effective. When it came to letters that loooked odd, I just told my daughter to do it the "right" way and there was no problem. I will be using Pictures in Cursive (queenhomeschool.com) this year since we've exausted the levels in HWT!
  3. I bought it. Although I can review her lesson and see for myself if she got it right, etc. I like that we can both sit, each with a book in our laps, and go over it together.
  4. Here's a vote for Character Quality Language Arts. I am so excited to start using this program. Here is a link to their samples page: http://www.tfths.com/samples.php Here is a review from Cathy Duffy: http://cathyduffyreviews.com/grammar-composition/cqla.htm It's great for reluctant writers. It breaks down writing into manageable pieces.
  5. We are going to use Manners Made Easy for the Family this year. It has one short lesson per day for the year.
  6. We have the timeline figures software from Homeschool In the Woods. We print out the large images to use as coloring pages. We don't do the audio, but probably will next time around for more impact. We didn't do the lapbook kits because they weren't available at the time.
  7. Is it too much to do both Character Quality Language Arts and Writing Strands for a third grader? I think I know the answer to this (yes, it's too much), but I just have to ask because I fell in love with WS first, and then found and fell in love with CQLA so I want to do both (as well as Wordly Wise LOL). The more I read about CQLA (today I read their 34pg FAQ), the more I feel CQLA has everything I need and adding too it could get to be overwhelming. I was hoping someone here has used both, or could advise me. Thanks!
  8. I recommend using MOH. I actually purchased TOG Unit 1 for my then 5yo, intending to use MOH as a spine, but then I ended up getting overwhelmed with TOG and just went with MOH after Unit 1. I was so glad I did. I was spending more time in prep than I was in using TOG. It was way too much for my advanced 5yo. I really like TOG, though (which was why I kept at it, even though it just wasn't working), and plan to use it on Round 2. We are loving MOH so much! I use Usborne's Encyclopedia's along with MOH, but it's more just for fun. MOH Volume 1 is a much lighter read than Volume 2, so much that I haven't really supplemented with Volume 2.
  9. I used MOH and Usborne Encyclopedia's with TOG and it worked well.
  10. I use a class schedule from donnayoung.org. At the beginning of the year I write the lesson (or page) #'s that I want to accomplish that week in the column. I much prefer this weekly method to a daily one. Here are some weekly planners: http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/planner.htm
  11. I highly recommend Song School Latin. I am using it with my 6yo and even my 2yo enjoys the songs. It's a fun way to introduce Latin (and even I can keep up :P ).
  12. Thanks, TechWife. I will check out those books. I appreciate the feedback on the grade level as well. :)
  13. "Communication and Interpersonal Relationships" looks like a great book (http://www.writingstrands.com/communication.asp). They say it's for 6th grade and above, but my daughter will only be beginning 3rd grade this year. I was hoping someone who had it could tell me if it's "really" for 6th grade, and why, cuz I really want to get it now LOL (maybe I can get it for myself and use it for her later).:D
  14. We are using Song School Latin by Classical Academic Press (http://classicalacademicpress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6_12&products_id=5). My daughter is 6, and we are enjoying it. My 2yo son also enjoys dancing to the songs :)
  15. Has anyone used Character First's elementary program? It looks really nice, but the TM is a little pricey. It does seem worth it, but if I want to do all character traits in a year, that will add up fast. Anyone use/have this? I'd like your opinions. Thanks! 17. We love it. They do a great job of describing how to form the letters.
  18. Wow, I hadn't realized the teacher edition was free. Thanks :)
  19. Does anyone have the PLL teacher book, and did you find it helpful? I didn't think one was really necessary, but since they sell one, I thought I'd ask. Btw, I plan on getting the Hillside edition of PLL for my daughter. I realize the teacher book would be slightly different. Thanks :)
  20. Ariana learned to read when she just turned three (three years, zero months), and at age 4 (four years, one month) had a 5th grade reading level. She writes all the time, legibly, and I know she is ready for this. My question was about FLL vs. PLL not if my daughter is ready ;) I've decided to go with PLL. It's lighter on the formal grammar, which I'm not too worried about right now. Thanks, everyone :)
  21. I am interested in this edition. How does it differ from the classic edition? How much of the catholic influence comes through? Well although Ryan is a bit young for PLL ;) Ariana has been reading since she was three and is more than ready. She did A Beka K5 phonics (and math) last fall (2007). So she's done similar things to PLL/FLL in the past. Checking out the "see inside" previews on amazon, it doesn't look like anything too over her head at this point. Thanks, everyone :)
  22. I am trying to decide which to go with. I had decided to go with PLL, because I thought I had read months ago that it was better, even if it didn't have as much content. A friend brought it up again, and now I'm torn. Help me decide!
