  1. Dangerous Book For Boys/Girls. Favorite Books of ours. Teaches all kinds of surival skills; fires, morse code, just so much good stuff in those books; Paper airplanes, just off the top of my head.
  2. I have a minute and would like to add some info. but can't address questions right now. Ideally she would like to take some classes at one of our alternative high schools and I have met with the counselor there twice; however, they are changing their structure and now require all students to be referred by their local high school, which she has zero interest in going to. We still may be able to get that referral, we shall see. She has lots of friends here in our community and is very involved with a few peers in our circle of friends. We have recently had a major change in our home structure (abuse related) and she is in Australia right now for a visit with my sister to get away from here for a few weeks. In the meantime I need to figure out some things with her. We have talked extensively about her future and we are somewhat close. She is a good kid. But she is dealing with a lot right now. She is almost done with her counseling sessions and.....I dont know. We have talked about her future and she is not sure. She wants to travel and is consider college in Australia since it is an option, though we haven't really looked into that. She does have an interest in Nursing but is reluctant to start with cna certification because she doesn't want to work in a nursing home. Right now we just need to keep her options open which means getting through 3/4 years of high school math successfully. And of course the other core subjects. Also, the other part of wanting to take classes through the alternative high school is that they will pay for dual enrollment; a major plus. I think outsourcing for math and a foreign language will be our 2 best options this year. We have met with the local CC and can possibly just handle dual enrollment on our own with them but it will be pricey AND I am not sure how well she will do in her writing to gain entrance there. Thanks for all the input. I will be mulling things over for the next few days.
  3. I have gone through the placement test for Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 and I think she would be able to pass with nearly 100%. I think going into Algebra 1, I would really like her to have a "teacher" or a "class" or at least something like whatTT offers. She just wants to be done with school so maybe TT Alg.1 would be fine and she can finish it as soon as she likes then move onto Geometry then Alg. 2 at her own pace. On the Other hand, I am afraid that if she is too bored with it, she will not see the need to finish and loose motivation to go on. She has done really well with CLE since 8th grade but I know it changes format now into a textbook and working on your own paper. Im not sure how she will do with that. She does pretty well for the most part in whatever she does, as long as she can stay motivated.
  4. Please Ignore my signature. It does not accurately describe us. Anyhow. My 16yo DD is starting her 10th Grade Credits. A Mix of ACE, Notgrass, and not decided on math yet. We are of the get er done philosophy. Especially since she is "behind" and should be starting 11th grade credits this year. She has just finished CLE 700 and is very grounded now in her basic math functions and I am sure she is ready for Algebra 1, maybe even Algebra 2; which is where my question lies. If she takes a placement test and places into Algebra 2, how do we give credit for Algebra 1 as it is required. (Going by state graduation requirements which are according to career path/college chosen. We are not sure of a career path, maybe nursing. Probably college anyway. ) So I was looking at Teaching Textbooks for Algebra 1 and I really think she may place into Algebra 2. How do we give the required math credits for Algebra 1? Thanks.
  5. If you like to hike, come to Carbondale. Mount Sopris is a full days hike. It is beautiful here. You could stay at a KOA?

  7. I am, but I need to figure some things out. I am starting a sugar detox soon. Maybe Monday. And I understand that carbs are basically sugar once they are broken down. But I dont understand why some avoid beans. I do not enjoy a lot of meat, but I like eggs and beans. I have a hard time getting the protein and avoiding beans seems impissible. Is it because they are starchy? And I thought that because they have fiber that makes them low on glycemic index. I guess Ill keep reading. Now to find a good pair of walking shoes, any suggestions? Should I care whether they are a true walking shoe by design or will any running shoe fit the bill.
  8. Are there really only 3 choices for the top loaders? And they are all the same 3.3 cubic feet? Do you find it sufficient for capacity? Family of 7, We Do laundry daily.
  9. I do have support. But not from family. And Thanks.
  10. I will be very vague. And speak in general terms. It really bites that certain tragedies/ crises are so taboo. Had there been a death in the family Im guessing I could speak more freely. But facing the loss of a family member (dh) because of other reasons leaves little room for support. Anyway, I would just like to chat. Vaguely, and in general terms. BTW. My DD will be 16 on Monday and I really dont want her birthday to get lost in this mess.
  11. Just sitting down to re read your post. AND Taking notes. The biggest reason for ps would be to avoid cost of DE. Thanks for your help.
  12. I will try this. I was at their site earlier today. Thanks for the suggestion. Sent from my SM-G530P using Tapatalk
  13. Thanks for the quick reply. I have to confess....we are non reporting and its really bugging me now. I feel like I have nowhere to go for help. No high school counselor to ask questions. Yes thats why I am here. We have considered DE, there is a CC in our small town, easily accessible and we have met with the admissions counselor there. It is a good option but we would be paying tuition. Thats the biggest reason I am looking into part time ps. Anyhow. She is getting ready to take the accuplacer soon and is doing pretty well in the practice tests so far. I have a hard time helping her to be motivated. SHE IS EXTREMELY DISCOURAGED b/c she is just now finishing her 9th grade classes. She should be a junior this fall. I am at a loss. But hopeful.
  14. I just finished reading the Colorado Revised Statutes concerning equal access. The wording states "activity" and is defined ..."Activity" means any extracurricular or interscholastic activity, including but not limited to any academic , artistic, athletic, recreational, or other activity offered by a school." To me this says we can take core/academic classes? I will go and talk to the school on Monday. I am just apprehensive since we have homeschooled completely in house since Kinder. However, I am willing to give a little if this is what she needs.
  15. BTW. My WTM book is packed away b/c of a possible move. Guess I need to go digging. Sent from my SM-G530P using Tapatalk
  16. DD is my 1st high school experience. I have learned so much these past few weeks as we are realizing what needs to be done in...4yrs of high school as we are just now finishing up 9th level work. Right now dd is using lots of ACE b/c it just gets done. DD will be 16 in March and wants to be done with high school ASAP. We have had several good discussions about how we can progress. She wants to go to a B&M school, always has but I we will not allow that for now. I had a phone call with k12 for a Colorado online public school that was very informative. And after some reading I do not think that k12 would end well for us. However I did find Online Homeschol Group?? and DD agrees it looks very good for Chemistry. Possibly Alg. 1. Question. DD wants to get into Nursing....for now. I was looking at the Language arts at Online Homeschol Group and there is a class called Introduction to Literature and it is for high school. If I added EIW level 9 to this, would that cover a full english credit for 10th? Is there a standard for what counts for credit in high school? Sent from my SM-G530P using Tapatalk
  17. Great info. Thanks. So is EIW Essentials in Writing or is it Excellence in Writing. I looked them both up. They are both writing curr. Thanks again. Sent from my SM-G530P using Tapatalk
  18. My 10th grader needs something for writing. She hasnt had any formal writing instruction since 7th. We tried WWS in 8th but she could not hold those long paragraphs long enough to write them. I didnt know how to tweak them so we gave it up. She wants to be a nurse and is very good in English and loves to read but only fictional/ trendy titles. She has read all of Riordan series and so much more. Anyhow, I can possibly buy something in the next few months but we need to start SOMETHING now. She wants to start looking at dual enrollment at the local CC but I am not sure she will get very far with her writing abilities. I am hoping to buy a used copy of IEW SWI C as soon as I can but in the meantime are there any suggestions? I will see whats available at the library also.
  19. I am so glad I took the time to post this question. The feedback I get here is very much appreciated. I have looked a bit more closely at the two programs' samples online and I think we could make Rod and Staff work for us. I also read through a few other threads here. Ellie, I read in a different thread where you wrote that if used as written, Rod and Staff English also teaches writing. I can see that from looking at the samples online. I also read that you recommend having the student write out the assignment as opposed to filling in answers in a workbook (like CLE) or doing work orally. Just wondering if I will be able to determine how much writing my boy can handle/needs and how much I can do orally while still getting the most out of this curriculum. (I do push at times/when needed and with discernment) Sorry I did not take the time to find those exact quotes from you. And I realise this may be a question only I can answer. Anyhow. I have fleeting thoughts of trying WWE again (I have tried it in the past) and while my children did well, I had a hard time teaching. I think it was a slower pace than what I am used to and I was left feeling as though we werent getting anything accomplished. I am so used to rushing through every day to finish each DVD lesson that if I am not exhausted and exasperated then I must not have accomplished enough. It is a terrible place to be, but I am learning. With that said, and if Rod and Staff will take care of writing for us also, all the better. Hope this all makes sense to someone. Thanks for listening!
  20. I am looking for the most independent curriculum I can get. I have a 2nd and 3rd grader moving from Abeka this year. I am really unsure about language. I am familiar with CLE as we use it for math already but I have only seen samples of Rod & Staff. I am leaning towards R&S for Language, and I am hoping it won't be much more teacher intensive than CLE. I am somewhat concerned after looking at samples of R&S Spelling as I think my 9yo son will fly through those lists. In fact I think he might test out of most of them w/o much difficulty. Samples of CLE spelling are even more concerning. What's a Momma to do? "Open and go" and being as independent as possible are my priorities....right along with cost. I have an almost 16 yo daughter that is needing lots of "encouragement" right now. We are trying to finish up 9th grade from last year and my 2 littlest are very busy right now and need almost constant supervision. ( My one year old is hitting and biting and my 2 yo tries to carry little brother by picking him up by his neck... not good.. Like I said, constant supervision. ) We are also trying to get our house built before winter. I am very committed to homeschooling so please no discouragement there. We already took a year off 2 years ago so that is not an option. Any ideas?
  21. Just read every post in this thread. A crazy fun read. I might run downstairs and wash my dishes now. maybe not.
  22. A few years later but still in Colorado....Roaring Fork Valley.
  23. Just wanted to put a word in for CLE Math. My now 10th grader started in Saxon k, Abeka until 8th, tried TT which was a failure for us, then ordered one CLE book in Math and fell completely in love. Where we were getting stuck in Abeka and butting heads horribly every day, we no longer argue about math. It gets done every day, no tears. I do believe it is one of her favorite subjects now. I did take her back to the 600 level to give her some confidence and build her a solid foundation. At first she didn't like the idea of going back to 6th but I think she enjoys being able to understand what she is doing. It's just the right amount of work for us, too! I so Love CLE math! My 2nd grader is begging for it, too!
  24. Love CLE. My 10th grader used Abeka to 6th grade, then tried TT, then CLE. A great fit. Will use with my 3rd grader this year.
  25. I ordered CLE Math for my 2nd and 8th Grader for 2013. I only ordered one LightUnit to give it a shot. They Both Loved It, and are begging for more. I Love It. Everything I need is in ONE book. Absolutely Genius. I don't have to dig for answer keys and test keys and tests and speed drills/ IT IS ALL IN ONE BOOK... Hallelujah! If you are looking for simplicity.....I can definitely recommend CLE. Will be ordering full years for 9th / 2nd and 3rd this year/ Just Awesome. Math was our only NON Fail this past year. One Happy Momma....as far as math goes.
