  1. Just looking into MOH with my 2nd /3rd and K er listening in...maybe? Does it work as mostly a spine read aloud with all the extras you could possibly imagine to add in. So basically I would be reading to them and choosing maybe an activity/coloring page/ timeline/whatever else I so desire. ? We tried TQ history last year and checking out books fom the library = History FAIL in a major way. So my question: Does MOH Schedule out readers for different age levels or just give general reading suggestions? Or can you suggest a History with a list of readers to go with for purchase? Also having the readers spread out through the entire manual of TQ was another reason for fail. If I could have gone to a list and then to Amazon to purchase/ possibly doable. Trying to keep it simple. I do have the WTM book and possibly doing a spine like Usborne and adding in WTM suggested readers would work. Anyone care to chime in? Would like to start 4yr cycle this year with them all/ would like Bible included....maybe SOTW? Sorry for rambling. Thanks.
  2. Thanks for your responses. I am still soaking them in for now but I wanted to answer some of your questions. DD 13 has used Abeka since 2nd. I started out with Saxon phonics and math only prior to Abeka. She reads well/ excellent comprehension. She does not enjoy sitting under DVD lectures anymore and I cannot say that I blame her. I know that there are so many other options available and this year we jumped out of the box. She placed in Algebra 1 with TT and we got maybe 2 or 3 chapters into the material and she was lost. I am planning to order a few workbooks from CLE to get a feel for it. She placed at the 600 level for CLE and that is where I would plan to start her. I would really like to use Saxon for her but she fights it vehemently. I know now that she will probably fight against whatever I choose so it may not even matter WHAT I choose. She wants to try ACE and I am willing to order a workbook for each subject so that we both can get a feel for it. A Hind note: I did order Saxon for her I think it was in 5th grade to go alongside Abeka. That did not go well. DS 7 has used Abeka DVDs as well since K4 (He should be doing 2nd this year). We have dropped everything I had planned for this year and I am working with him on math facts and just letting him read while I figure out what in the world I am doing. He reads I think at a 5th grade level and is fairly decent at spelling though we are still working through "special sounds", etc. He is great at math, just wants to get it done, along with any other subject. He would rather be spying or building and I am A OK with that for now. DD 6 is "interesting". She takes a little longer to figure things out. She can do the work I set in front of her but needs help to stay focused. She used Abeka DVD for K5 and 1st. It has been quite the challenge for us. I don't require a lot of the busy work that is assigned. No extra writing or worksheets just to keep busy. And I have adjusted that for each of them. She is very artistic and will choose drawing over most any other activity. By the time she had figured out what her teacher wanted her to do and got prepared for it , "pick up your pencil, stand up and sing" or whatever the task, it was over and she had moved onto something else before DD had even figured out how to get out of her chair and stand; or figure out where her pencil went. I think we spent most of 1st grade looking for her pencil. DD4 is just having fun. I would like to start a real math program with her at least for next year and I am leaning towards Saxon or Horizons. DS 1 is in destructive mode. I have one more coming and am due in July. This is what I ordered for this year FLL 1 and 2 WWE 1 and 4 AAS 1 (2x) TT Algebra 1 Artistic Pursuits Some History I cant remember the name of Analytical Grammar Vocabulary from Classical roots. I truly believe now that the best curriculum is the one that gets done. Abeka got done. I do not have time to teach each subject to 4 children, period. Not going to happen. I will either order Abeka DVDs or for everyone or ACE with another math. CLE or Saxon. Sorry to be so lengthy and I understand lots of this may be irrelevant but anyway. Thanks.
  3. I have tried a few searches in the forum for leaning styles, etc. and cannot find what I am looking for. I am trying to decide on a math path for my 4 DC and have read "here" that I need to know what type of learner each child is. Can you ladies please direct me to where I can read more on this topic. Are there specific labels for different subject areas or one general label based on an overall picture of each personality. Does that make sense? I guess I am specifically asking just for math learning. Thanks.
  4. For starters I switched my DD13 from Abeka DVDs last year to completely unboxed this year and am having a mid year crisis. Anyhow...We ordered TT Alg. 1 because that is where she tested but it did not take long to realize this was not a good switch for her. We both thought she would love TT but she really struggled to grasp anything being taught. I am seeing now that she really needs a good solid pre algebra year and I was looking at ordering Saxon with Art Reed videos knowing she would probably be in tears once she discovered what I had in store for her. (We have used Saxon in the past which I love and she hates) I have been encouraged at what I have read here about CLE Math and am working on the placement test for her. Also for my 2nd grader, who has a solid background with Abeka math. Can someone tell me if I need Teacher Manuals for 8th or just answer keys? What about for my DS in 2nd? Teachers Manual or just answer keys? Also did I read the CLE website correctly that the first unit (201) and (701 or 801) are just pretests? Do we need to work through those or skip on to the next unit? Thanks alot. I have learned a lot this year. My DD13 will not like anything I choose for her once we have started. I just have to be the school police and force her to do her work, whatever it may be. Just for anyone interested....I am saving my duckies and switching all 4 of my DC back to Abekas DVDs. Because that way, we get school done period. Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
  5. I had a look at the samples of FLL 2 because I was thinking that was where we were headed for 2nd. I will jump over to take a look again and see. Thanks for the reply.
  6. I cannot figure out where this instruction will be picked back up in 2nd grade. We are at the end of 1st grade Language and these type of "rules" are what ds is learning in his Abeka "Language" class. I will share what I have narrowed down so far and can anyone tell me where these type "rules" will be picked back up or if I am missing something. He reads very well and I was not intending to use any phonics specific program. It does not show up in FLL that I have seen as these rules are not part of the mechanics of language. My guess is we will see it in R&S spelling?? FLL or R&S Preparing to Build set WWE R&S Spelling by Sound and Stru Still piecing together our reading. Anyone wish to share your favorite adventure stories for boys???? SM 2a/b + Miquon SOTW 1 Undecided on anything else at this point. Thank you.
  7. Hopefully I am on the right board this time
  8. This is for my DD almost 6. We are finishing up her K5 year (Abeka Videos) and I am needing to order for 1st grade but still undecided for math. I am not familiar much with learning types but I know that she picks up a lot of what she is seemingly not paying attention to. Thankfully. I was thinking of using Right Start for 1st and then moving to SM for 2nd but with 4 other dc I am not sure we would even get RS done. I like MM but I feel like she needs something with manipulatives that she can get her hands on since she has had zero of that this year. She can do simple additionto 10 and is reading fairly well. Is there any reason I should not just go ahead and start SM 1a this year? I have read several here who have said that SM wasn't their favorite for 1st. I am not super familiar with SM style of teaching but I do know that I want her to understand math conceptually. She counts using her fingers and doesn't understand adding on. Most of her work she can figure out once I help her. So, a few questions about my choices, if you will... 1. Would Horizons for 1st give her a solid foundation for math skills, hands on learning (manips or C-rods) and does it teach conceptually as well? How hard of a switch would that make SM for 2nd? 2. If I used MM, is there an easy way to add in manipulatives? I have read about using the Alabacus worksheets from RS as a supplement. Would that be enough to give her some hands on experience? Or maybe adding Miquon to MM. Thoughts, please.
  9. This is for my dd almost 6. We are finishing up her K5 year and I am needing to order but still undecided for math. I am still quite unfamiliar with learning types but she is very sharp but with major focus issues. She soaks up a lot just by listening when I think she is not paying attention. Anyhow I was thinking of starting Right Start for 1st and then move into SM for 2nd but with 4 other dc I am not sure it would get done??? I like MM but I feel like she needs ?something else for this coming year. Something she can get her hands on because she just hasn't had that yet. We are just finishing up K5 Abeka but with videos which means she has had pretty much zero hands on learning. She can do simple additon to 10 and is reading fairly well. Is there any reason I should not just go ahead and start SM1 (US Edition) this year? I have read several here who have said that SM wasn't their favorite for 1st. A few questions about my choices, if you will.. 1. Would Horizons for 1st give her solid foundational math skills, hands on (manipulatives, I guess or use with C-rods???) and does it teach "conceptually" as well and something I can teach without a lot of guesswork for me. How hard of a switch would that make SM for 2nd? 2. If I used MM, is there a way to add in manipulatives easily? I have read about using the Alabacus worksheets from RS or workbooks as a supplement to give her hands on. Does it sound like that might be a good match with MM? Or adding Miquon? Help Please :confused1:
  10. You might check out Alfred's Adult Basic Piano Course. I was teaching myself but got distracted. Now my 13 yo is teaching herself. Very straightforward with exercises right in the book. I think there are 2 or more levels. Just a thought.
  11. Yes, thank you. This: If I add in the phonics workbooks, would I need the TM for those?
  12. Ah, thank you. This is for my ds7 who is an excellent reader going into 2nd. He has used Abeka K5 and 1st grade previously. I was thinking that phonics would be covered if I used AAS, not sure how I picked that up but I did. I do feel like he could use one more year of phonics I guess for those rules he hasn't learned yet??? Does that get covered in the R&S English set. OK almost there I think. Whew, running out of time.
  13. Just about settled but......Went looking more closely to add books to my purchase list and I am not sure what I will need. My plan was to use R&S "Preparing to Build" set along with the "Spelling by Sound and Structure" set. Then I noticed there is another set of phonics workbooks that are part of the reading set. 5 or so additional reading books and and 5 or so phonics books. so I need to add those in also to round out the phonics? I was thinking the spelling part was going to take care of the phonics but?????? Thoughts?
  14. These are my considerations for 2nd: (Not complete just "Language" Subjects) WWE/FLL AAS or R&S Penmanship..Not sure, but something light as my ds6 is a pencil phobe but has already started cursive since K. Memorization/Poetry : WTM sugg Free Reading: Abeka Readers and VP and whatever else I can get my hands on. Is there too much overlap here? I am thinking that AAS will give us the phonics instruction he needs but what about grammar. I am considerign MCT but I think he is not ready for that yet. He is an excellent reader; way beyond what he gets in his current schooling. He can pretty much figure out anything he picks up but certainly needs the rules for learn the correct spelling. I really wanted to start WWE with him but not sure if I would need to do FLL or R&S alongside. What if I just do AAS or R&S spelling with WWE. Suggestions please. Currently using Abeka for all subjects. I have a 3 yr old dd and 9 mo ds to care for; simple and straightforward is best.
  15. What has been your experience with Beautiful Feet US & World? I would like to make it a 1 year course for 8th. DD is 13 and loves to read, but mostly her own choices. I Love Love Love the Lit pics for this course. Also wondering if any additional Lit would be too much?
  16. Looking to supplement our Abeka History with living books. Thinking: "A Tale of Two Cities" or "City of Darkness, City of Light" "The Scarlet Pimpernel" What are your favorites or a favorite go to resource. TIA
  17. I was flipping through the History book (World History) and was wondering if I could find a reading list someone has possibly come across that would coincide with Abekas history. I will give it a go on my own for now but happy to hear any responses.
  18. I was looking at their website the other day and I cannot tell if there is a history rotation or what. Do they follow a 4 year cycle or ????????? Cannot tell by the titles. There are some beautiful books there.
  19. Thanks for all the ideas. As I have pondered these thoughts I am most likely to start all in Ancients for next year. I think it would be so good to have some common ground even if they are digging in on 2 totally different levels. Does my signature not show up? It has our current curriculum and ages listed there, and also explains why I need some cohesiveness in our study as we branch out. My first year to be unboxed and I need this to work without failure. Ok, I'll settle for "without daily disaster". I'm good with making adjustments but I don't want to be running back screaming to our current boxed curriculum.
  20. I am planning our history rotation based on the 4 year rotation in TWTM. Since my 8th grader would be set up to start over in 9th grade with Ancients my thought is to start all 3 in the Modern period. (Suggested grade placement for this period is in 4th, 8th, and 12th) So If I follow the plan for the 4th grade Modern period with my 1st and 2nd grader, does anyone think this would be a set up for failure? I plan to use SOTW for the littles (would be volume 4 for them) and haven't decided on a spine for 8th yet; I guess it depends on what period I go with. In the book, she suggests keeping all children in the same time period and I think this is a good idea for us, even with the age gap. My other option is to start all three in Ancients (following the 9th grade suggestions for my 8th grader) which would leave her with an extra year for ?????????????? Yes I will be following reccommended resources at the appropriate level for each, but pretty much combining 1st and 2nd grader on mostly everything. Need to let this all soak in for a while. Thanks for any opinions.
  21. I do not have an Ikea nearby but am looking to make an order online and I cannot decide between the high gloss white or the matte regular white. Can anyone give me any pros and cons? These will go in my living room. TIA!
  22. Also wanted to add that I am trying to decide If I want to keep my DD13 set up for US History next year or try combining all 3 together in the same period. I am still reading through TWTM trying to figure out a good fit. My thoughts are using Biblioplan to coordinate 3rd or 4th MOH for DD13 while using something else for the other 2 (1st and 2nd) next year. Narrowing it down! :hurray: This has been painful for my brain! :ack2:
