  1. My second grader/7 years old does the following things when reading... Easily loses her place when going to the next line in the book. Is easily distracted by all pictures, she will stop mid sentence to look at a picture, then loses her place. Will not read a contraction as a contraction, she reads it the "long" way. If it is written as "wouldn't" she reads it as "would not." We talked about this and she understands what contractions are, but insists on reading them this way. Maybe it's just a habit we need to work on. She has good comprehension and is reading at or above grade level. I don't remember my older 2 doing these things. Would you be concerned? Or is this pretty typical stuff for this age? Thanks, Julie
  2. Thank you for detailed schedule & which book to find them in, this is very helpful!
  3. Thank you, I do have the cd's but I didn't know about the free worksheets from the MP website, on my way to find them. Thanks again!
  4. I'm keeping our supplies on top of our book shelves which the older children can still reach. 1 year old has his own book case for his books & big baket of puzzles/fun stuff. I keep re-directing him to his stuff & so far it's working. If he starts getting into their books I will need to re-evaluate. I need a system to keep him out of our AAS board, I'm thinking of having my handy dad build us an eisel of some sort, sturdy but high enough to keep 1 yr old out of it. I don't want to hang it on the wall. Any advice/or pictures of that?
  5. There are 25 lessons, I would like to do latin 4-5 days per week.Did you do the lesson & then spend the entire week reviewing & reinforcing? Or did you do more than 1 lesson per week? My kids are 12, 9 & 7 and this is their first exposure to latin. Thanks, Julie
  6. My dd is 12 & in 8th grade. We just started & these classes are taking about 5 hours per day, which does not include Lit reading. Alg 1/2 History Latin Vocab/grammar/writing Logic Science-physics Art/classical music (once per week each) Bible/catechism
  7. My 9 yo ds is no where near that level, I think it looks great.
  8. Thank you! I missed this last time around, I had my basket full then forgot to order. I didn't get the email either! Thanks so much!
  9. The Complete Book of US History http://www.amazon.com/The-Complete-Book-U-S-History/dp/1561896799
  10. I was vey close to buying CWH but I just kept hearing the same thing, too difficult to implement, kind of jumps all over, so it's not just you. We are using the Catholic history books from Emmanual Books, love love, love them.
  11. Thank you so much, I think the bolded part is exactly what I needed to understand. I don't want to just give her a reading assignment & let her run with, I need to give this kind of direction so she learns how to use what she has just read/learned. Thank you:)
  12. Thank you so much for all the replies! I am taking it all in & still learning so much from you all:)
  13. This was my frustration as well. my order was over $200 and only $15 of that is on back order (things that are not vital to starting school) They said they still had to wait 5 business days to ship. So I talked to a supervisor & she said that big orders will go via UPS (not economy or media rate) even if its a free shipping order, which is only 2 shipping days to my state, so it's worth a call to them to see if they will send via ups.
  14. I guess by narrate, I meant summarize. But she hasn't outlined before. She will be learning that this year for the first time. I know she can read material and pick out the important information. But organizing & pulling it all together will be her challenge.
  15. Can you share with me how much you "teach" your middle school student. This is our first year HS, dd is very independent & pretty motivated. For example, history, do you let them read material, do a narration of the material and you check the narration. Or do you actually teach the material that they read, like a teacher would in a school setting, like point out important dates, people, events etc. Or do you simply have a discussion about the material to make sure they understand. I know this may seem like a pretty silly question, I'm just not sure how much independence to give her after coming from traditional classroom where the teachers seemed to lead them through the material. Thank you, Julie
  16. Everything is almost ready to go, But I'm just plain ole nervous about starting my first year. Worried about juggling all 3 kids plus a toddler. I decided to start my 8th grader a week before the other 2. And I'm starting with just the basic 3 r's for the first several weeks than add a new class every week. Both ideas that I got here. Any other suggestions for a smooth beginning for a newbie? Thanks, Julie
  17. I hope this isn't a rude question, just wondering if anyone would mind sharing what you spend for books for 1 school year. This is our first year so just curious if I'm at the high or low end. I found about 80% used and just placed my order for the final things on Rainbow Resource and Amazon. I spent $900 total for 3 kids and that includes maps & a globe. But does not include other supplies. Thanks, Julie
  18. ...but it is sending even if you don't see it in sent folder.
  19. After you type your pm if you scroll down there is a box to check that says something like "save this message to my sent box" and then send it. I'm trying to figure out if you can make that permanent without checking the box everytime, because I always forget. Hope that helps, I'm fairly new here too;)
  20. Brilliant! I love the idea of them marking the map. You ladies rock, I'd be lost without all the great advice I've been given here:001_smile:
  21. Can anyone point me in the direction of a wall map showing the routes of the early American explorers and where they departed from & where they sailed/landed. Thank you.
  22. Can any of you experienced shoppers fill me in on the best time to buy online. Are there any big summer sales coming up? I've been shopping here & buying some used stuff. But honestly some things at Christian Book Store are just a couple dollars more than people are selling used books for here. Does Christian Book Store ever put out coupon code like __% off entire purchase? Are there any big online sales coming up? When you buy new where do you like to shop? Thanks Julie
  23. Yes, from everything I read, they said start with level 1 no matter the age/grade and just move through it quickly. Thanks to everyone who replied. :001_smile:
