  1. When do you call it quits? I have to nag my children about practicing their instruments. Dd has been playing piano and ds playing drums for about 9 months. Their initial enthusiasm has been gone for months. I know music is beneficial, but I keep asking myself...why am I spending all this money on lessons and then begging them to practice. Do I give it more time? In your experience does love of playing an instrument grow over time? Any thoughts/advice? Thank you :)
  2. Continue, but at a slower pace, in math & writing. Review phonograms bi-weekly. Continue reading literature, science & poetry, independent & read alouds. Start an online typing program. Camping, field trips, star gazing, nature studies, swimming & family vacation.
  3. Thank you for sharing this, I have a stack of holy cards from loved ones also & I keep them all shoved in my bibles. This would be a great thing to pass on to my kids who didn't have the chance to know all their great grandparents.
  4. What ages are you using this for? How long do expect each lesson to take? From what samples I have seen the lessons look fairly short. Could I use this as a spine and add on living books for my rising 6th grader?
  5. Some on the conservative/right end of the political spectrum would equate social justice with redistribution of wealth and moving toward socialist ideas. I am not referring to the Catholic idea of social justice that Crimson Wife referred to. To me this is charity, and not the same thing.
  6. I will be interested in the WWS 1 class, I have the least confidence in myself as a writing teacher, so an online class for this would take some of the stress from me.
  7. Ooh, that's a wonderful question. I will be following this one. Mine love camping and all that goes with that, campfires, nature walks, cooking and eating outside. They have recently re-kindled their love for drawing & sketching after I I bought some new art pencils, charcoals and pastels, we've been doing some YouTube art lessons. And we have a new love for Shakespeare going on right now. My oldest just finished Romeo & Juliet at school, while we were doing Midsummer Nights Dream at home, so it's been interesting to listen to their discussions about that. Great topic, can't wait to hear what others have to say, I'm in need of some inspiration too.
  8. Island of the Blue Dolphin Where the Red Fern Grows Five Children and It The Hobbit Lord of the Rings The Little House series 20,000 Leagues
  9. I totally agree with this. This is our last year of Saxon we are switching to MM, my kids are bored & not being challenged. I have cut down the problems to a minimum. I know that my children know the material and they are efficient at getting through their work, but if I had them do every problem, especially my ds at level 6/5, I'm sure he would drag it out for hours due to pure frustration at the lack of thinking/boredom.
  10. For 6th grade we use Our Pioneers & Patriots by Furlong for American History. Actually we spread it over 5th & 6th grade as recommended in MODG.

  12. I am excited about 1. Writing and Rhetoric- my kids beg to do writing with this curriculum, and that is a first for us. 2. Ancient History using living books and great literature, this will be the first time I do not have a text to follow for history, so I'm super excited to finish planning this summer. 3. Latin for Children (for dd) & Latin Alive (for ds).
  13. In addition to the great literature, poetry & reading I would start exposing them early to plays, Shakespeare, orchestra, art museums. We also do a lot of nature walks & nature studies/journaling. I set up a nature table in my house with magnifying glasses, sketch pads and colored pencils. I think when young children learn to observe and notice things in their world at a young age, they continue that habit of noticing and making connections. And all of these real world living experiences will help them make connections in reading & all other studies.
  14. My dd, also in 3rd, LOVES The Little House series!! I basically stopped her schooling for several weeks while she read through the series, she could not put them down. Now she's having me read them aloud to her before bed. Maybe get the first one from the library & see if she's interested before investing in them.
  15. Writing (including research related to writing, organization and editing) -60 minutes daily Spelling- 15 minutes (3-4x week) Grammar- 15 minutes (4x week) Literature- reading time is 2 hours daily and this includes literature, poetry, history and science but not all in the same day. Language (Modern or Ancient) latin 30 min. daily Math-60 min. daily Science- see above History-see above Art- 30 min. 3x week Music- 30 min. daily
  16. I was just looking at the 6th grade level. It looks like the first 25 lessons or so focus on grammar/mechanics and then the remainder of the lessons are focused on writing. Is that correct? Did you continue to review grammar for the remainder of the program on your own? It didn't look like there was a built in review for grammar after the first 25 lessons. Thanks for any input, the writing looks perfect for my rising 6th grader.
  17. I love the stuffed animal idea, brilliant! My dd would love picking the stuffed animal to match the character.
  18. I loved this, thank you for sharing it. Our morning basket time is never peaceful for than 15 minutes with an almost 3 year old. I know when I can embrace it for what it IS instead of the picture perfect scene that I have in my head, then I will truly be at a state of rest, and your post helped with that.
  19. I am going to write that one down for the future when we decide to study it a little more in depth. :)
  20. We have used No Fear Shakespeare, which puts the unabridged version right next to the "translated" version. And we have used Shakespeare Stories. With my 10 &9 year old we read the story version first, then we read the real thing with each of the children picking a part to read. They LOVE it!!
  21. Our homeschool co-op does choir and drama programs at Christmas & spring. My kids were in school through 1st & 3rd grade, we thought we'd miss that too, but there usually many opportunities for hs kids.
  22. 20% CAP Writing & rhetoric book 3. They posted this on their FB page. I think it's only good for book 3 student & teacher books. Coupon code is WR3NEW I haven't tried it yet, hope it works!
  23. My children are currently in 3rd & 5th and I am using book 1 for both. My 5th grader works a quicker pacer, its a little easier for him, but he is still getting so much from it. I asked the publisher and he did tell me that books build on each other. He said you "can" start at any level but that they do build and that they have 6th, 7th & 8th graders who start a book 1 too. We plan to do them in order, with my older one just moving though quicker.
