  1. Please anyone out there that lives in the area, I need your wisdom. We will be looking at schools the first part of June when we head up there, but its always better to hear from people that know the schools. Thank you again.
  2. Brandee, Thank you, for the school in Auburn. I need a school that serves 1st-8th. It looks like the school site you sent is for high school. Thank you
  3. She is getting a divorce and moving closer to work, which is in Auburn. I personally think she should leave him in that school because it is the only stable place for him at this time. In the last two years he has lost his baby brother at 3months old and his grandfather just last Sept. But we cann't force her to stay in that area.
  4. Hi everyone, I am not sure if this is were I should post this question but I'm still new to this board. My husband's ex-wife is relocating and she is wanting to put their son in a private school. We live in Oregon so we don't know anything about the schools in the Federal Way or Auburn area of Washington. I'm asking this group for some info on any of the schools in that area. The ex has looked at Brooklake, she thinks this is the best choice. If anyone has any input to help us with this, I would really enjoy hearing about the schools in Washington, also the public schools in that area she stated he would be given a choice later if he wanted to stay in private school. He currently goes to Lighthouse Christian School in Gig Harbor. Thank you for your help and input. Kristi

  6. I have been debating on starting my dd(10) in the R&S 4 English, we are finishing Easy Grammer 4. She has done well in EG but I think she needs to be pushed a little more, maybe. EG has been great for her using the prepostional approach. I have not used the old EG books but I was think if I went this direction I would use EG 5/6, since they are selling the overstock of TM's. Any one have a thought? Thank you Kristi
  7. Thank you all for your replies. I have ordered all I need for next year from R&S, and the only thing I have left in her curriculum is English. I am not sure if I should stay with Easy Grammer or move toward R&S English. Any suggestions?
  8. My dd is 10. We currently use R&S Math, Bible and Spelling. I have just ordered R&S Science 4 for next year. I have been thinking about R&S English, she is currently using Easy Gram 4 and Daily Gram 4. I have also just ordered R&S Music 1,2,3 and 4, I have never taught music but thought this would give us the basics on reading music. Last year we did R&S Health 4 grade, and we enjoyed that. My dd is having trouble in spelling so I was thinking of using something else, just not sure what. Or maybe just add a phonics type program. Thank you all, I will check out the yahoo group. Kristi DD (10) DD (almost 2) DS (7mon)
  9. I second, above post from Abbeyej. Just have fun. He will love to learn if he has a say in what he is learning. I would add a Bible studies or stories because you don't get that in Public school.
  10. Has anyone used all of R&S curriculm? How did it go? Were you happy with the end results? My curriculum seems to be headed this direction and I just want some input. What did you like or not like? Thanks Kristi
  11. What I have planned so far and if I stop reading everyones plans So far for dd(10): R&S Math 5 R&S Spelling 5 may repeat 4 Easy Grammer 5 with Daily Grams 5 or maybe R&S English 4 R&S Bible 5 SOTW 2 Pathway Readers 4 and 5 with workbooks R&S Science 4 (still not sure on this) for dd(2) reading, reading, reading ABC's, colors and numbers anything to keep her busy so dd(10) can get her stuff done for dd(1) reading, reading, reading learning to walk and anything to keep him busy so dd(10) can get her stuff done
  12. The best advice I can give is take sometime off. It won't hurt your childs education. I took my dd out of public school at the end of her third grade year and wish I would have had more then just the summer to adjust. Remember that this is a new step for both of you. Go slow. There will be many difficult days ahead but in the end it is worth it.
  13. Thank you for the advise. DD is 10 going on 11 and I was think of starting her in the 4th grade book we have done no formal science. She did get some in public school which she went until the third grade. So maybe I should just start her in the 3rd grade book at the begining of the set. What do you all think? Thanks Kristi
  14. Has anyone used Rod and Staff's Science curriculum? I am thinking of using this and would like some feed back. Thank you Kristi
  15. We go to a Baptist church and most of the parents keep their children with them. The nursery does not have anyone in it until the sermon starts. Also the nursery has a speaker so the sermon can be heard by the children and the parent or volunteer in the nursery. We also have Jr. Church for the older children (mostly visitors) which the children go to during the sermon, but even then most of the children in our church stay with thier parents. Right now I am in what I call training mode with our dd (14 months) she stays with us during the whole service unless I am working in the nursery. We even let her dance and worship God during he hymns and praise songs. When she gets loud we take her out and sit just outside the doors until she is calm and ready to go sit. We do not take her to the nursery to play because I feel this is rewarding her bad behavior. We are trying to train her now because I am due to have another baby in four weeks. Most of the congregation has been very supportive. I have even had most of the older women and men tell me that it is best to start now and they remember what it was like to sit or get up every five minutes with thier children. I was very surprised that the older generation (the ones with great grandchildren) had all thier children sit with them from the very begining and they never used the nursery. In fact I had one lady tell me that the nursery is for nursing mothers only not for childrern to play on the Lords day. Recently, in our church it has been some of the parents of children that want us to put our children in the nursery or Jr church. I look at the way their kids act and I won't allow my child to act like that. So it maybe that they are embarrassed about the way their children act and don't want to be reminded that someone else's children can sit and listen to a sermon. I say stick to your beliefs. If you choose to keep your children with you then that is your choice. If some doesn't like it then they will be judged in the end for judging you. Also I look at the children that go to the nursery and Jr church and they don't behave I don't want my child learning those habits from the other children. Just my two cents. We as parents are the ones responsible for the teaching of God's Word to our children not nursery workers or Jr church workers.
  16. First, welcome to the world of homeschooling. I started my first year last year and it was a rollercoaster. I took my dd(just turned 9 at the time) out of public school when she finished the third grade because she was falling through the cracks. Her reading level was 2nd grade, she could not subtract or multiple and she has a really difficult time spelling, but the public school she was going to wanted to push her on to fouth grade. So we decided to homeschool, also I am staying home with dd(1) and baby due in Sept. My sister in law home schools all six of her kids ages 13 - 10month, so she has been a great help with borrowing curricul. to try. Anyways I know how you feel. My best advice is to be patient. This is just as new to your dd as it is to you. Try not to stress over teaching her everything at once. Last year we used R&S 3rd grade english (this was very difficult for her we are using Easy Grammer 4 and possibly 5 this year), MUS Delta until I realized how bad her subtraction was then changed to R&S 3rd grade math (half way through the year); I will use R&S 4th grade math this year because it has tons of review. We also used Alpha Omega Bible 3rd grade, this year we will be using R&S Bible Nuture (its also their 4th grade reader). I tried Natural Speller but it did not fit us so I will try R&S Spelling 4th grade this year. We started SOTW 1 but after three weeks we were both so stressed out we quit and I will be using it this year but it will be me reading to her and asking her the discussion questions. We tried to work science in also but after week two or three we quit this also. I will try and include science in this year using God's Design Animal Kingdom and Human Body, also we are going through R&S Health for the Glory of God 4th grade. I picked up a Spectrum Phonics workbook to have her go through and we made it through 3 and 4 grade. Also I picked up a Spectrum Reading book 3rd grade to work through which we completed. I found the Spectrum books to be easy on the teacher and dd thought they were fun so we kept them through the year just so she didn't feel like a big failure. I also tried to find the areas that she didn't need to be held back in and kept her at her public school level so she wouldn't feel so behind. This year I am also adding Spectrums 4th and 5th grade Geography mainly because they will be easy for her and it will boast her self-esteem which public school seems to take out of children. She tells her freinds that she is a fourth and fifth grader because we use so many different levels of books. I have also kept her in her dance class because I did not want her to feel isolated from her friends. This was one of the hard parts for my daughter to get through. She was torn between being at home because she knew it was better and being with her friends. I tried to set-up sleep overs with her school friends and for awhile I took her to swim with what was going to be her fourth grade class. Also we had some melt downs because the school gives breaks and recess which I did not give at first because I thought it would be better to get everything done before the public kids were out of school, she didn't seem to care when she got done she was just use to having 5 to 20 min breaks every 30 to 45 min. (Its a wonder that anything gets done in public school.) Things got better for us when I let her have a 10 minute breather between subjects. This year we will have only two 15 min breaks and 1 hour break for lunch and still be done before 2:30. Anyways sorry this is so long. I just wanted to let you know that the first year is hard. I had to make lots of changes throughout the year and changes may still come this year as my daughter and I take this journey togther. That's what it is a journey, with plans that change everyday. Just know that you made the right choice in homeschooling your child, think of all the new and wonderful things she will be learning from you. Think about all the wonderful and not so wonderful time that you will get to spend with your daughter everyday instead of a strange that doesn't really care about her or her education. Sorry again for this being long and personal but I hope it helps. Kristi in Oregon
  17. You may want to look into Rod and Staff Bible. I am currently using grade 4 Bible Nuture/ Reader. It has one main book broke down into 3 units and it covers The Gospel of John, The Book of Acts and Job, Psalms, Proverbs. Also suggested is a map of Paul,s Journey that your class can map out. I have not used the 5th grade book but I plan on using it next year. You can visit their website at www.rodandstaffbooks.com Hope that helps. Kristi
  18. I have no music background but dd(10) and dd(1) love music. Dd(1) dances and keeps beat as soon as any music is turned on. Please help me find something that can work for both of them, I know that dd(1) can't do any book work or read music but I think just being around a good music program for dd(10) would benifit her. Thanks, Kristi in Oregon
  19. Just my two cents. This is my dd(10) 2nd year of homeschooling. Last year we used MUS Gamma and half way through the year we had to stop, she did not have her simple addition and subtraction facts down. That darn public school. My sister-in-law used R&S math with one of her 6 kids and said I should give it a try because it really allows the child to get those facts down and then it reviews, reviews, reviews each basic math fundation, which MUS did not. MUS is a good program just didn't work for us since she was not solid in her basic fundation. We used the third grade book last year and she is doing sooo much better. I would have her do all the problems day one, then odds day two, then all the problems day three, then evens day four and all the problems on day five. This helped with her attitude toward math. This year she is doing all the problems in the lessons and odds or evens in the drills. We did not use the blacklines. So I guess what I am saying is you can do as many of the problems as your child needs to get those facts down. Some else said that it really helps in future math to have the basics down and I would have to agree. Hope it helps, God bless, Kristi in Oregon dd(10) - R&S Math4, R&S Bible/Reading, R&S Spelling, EG 4&5 w/DG, R&S Health, God's Design Animal Kingdom and Human Body, Geography and still looking for handwriting and art.
  20. I was wondering the same thing but I chose to use R&S Bible nuture, which is also a reader for the fourth grade. My dd (10) has always had a difficult time with reading and she fall behind in public school. My husband and I decided that learning more about God's word is one of the most important things to teach so it seemed to me that this would get both reading and Bible done. For next year I will be using the Pathway Readers from R&S and use R&S 5th grade Bible. When I checked out the Bible for the 5th grade it did not have much for reading, so I will be trying the Pathway Readers next year. Kristi in Oregon dd (10) 5th grade, R&S math 4, R&S Spelling 4, R&S Bible/Reading 4, Spectrum Geography 4 and 5, Easy grammer 4 (finish) then into Easy Grammer 5 w/ Daily grams, R&S Health, God's Design Science, and a Classical Copy workbook for cursive. dss (7) 2nd grade lives in Washington, private Christian school dd (1) keeping me on my toes ds (not here yet)
  21. I just started homeschooling my daughter last year for 4th grade. She did not have a solid fundation in math. I put her in the Math U See (MUS) Gamma book (all multiplication) Half way through the year when I gave her addition and subtraction work sheets I realized she didn't have a fundation in addition or subtraction so my sister in law let me use her R&S grade 3 math book. This has helped so much that I have know decided to stop MUS and just continue with R&S grade 4. I know she is behind a grade level in math but atleast she will have a solid fundation, plus I think that R&S is harder then anything she did in public school. Lots of review which I love since dd has trouble with short and long term memory. Hope that helps, Kristi in Oregon dd (10) 5th grade, R&S math 4, EG 4 and 5, R&S Spelling 4, Geography 5, R&S health, R&S bible/reading 4 (she has a lot of catching up, darn public shcool) dss (7) 2nd grade, lives in Washington going to private Christian school. dd (1) just learning to talk, loves to sit and do work like sister ds on his way, kicking the air out of me. (due Sept.)
  22. Thank you for all the comments. I still haven't decided what to use but I have received alot of good ideas. I guess first I need to decided if we draw for fun only or if I want an actual program. At this point I am leaning towards just have fun, we will be starting our second year of hsing in Aug. The first year she said we had nothing fun, so maybe if I added something she wants with out the thought of it being part of her schooling she will get the other stuff done so she can move on to what she wants to learn. Thanks again, Kris in Oregon
  23. If this isn't a basic drawing program, does anyone have any suggestions for one? Thanks, Kris in Oregon dd (10) MUS, R&S math, EG 4, DG 4, R&S spelling, SOTW, R&S Health, R&S Bible/Reading 4 dd (1) learning to walk and talk
