  1. actually, never mind-I googled and found a bunch of ideas-didn't think there would be any, but I found a lot! THANKS anyway!
  2. Not soup either. We've had enough of all of the above and I still have two cans of pumpkin left I want to use today! Thanks!
  3. Well, I don't know how to help you post your items, but I'm looking to buy TT Algebra 1 (2.0 edition), so maybe I can help you that way! :) Plz PM me if you have that one!
  4. Trying to figure out where to place dd. She finished all of Saxon 8/7 (pre-algebra) but about 25 lessons. She didn't do well on the second part of the placement test for TT Algebra (which was all algebra concepts), but it looks like all the concepts she missed are repeated in the Algebra 1 curriculum. It just looks like a LOT of overlap if you compare the TT Pre-Alg and Alg 1 Tables of Contents---if you did both of these, could you have skipped, say, the second half of TT Pre-Alg and gone right into Alg 1?
  5. this is helping so much! Barbara-great info-thanks! Crimson-I will look into displaced homemaker in my state-i did know about that and had it on my list-great tip, thank you Brink-hugely helpful post and much appreciated-definitely will look into medical coding-I love that the course is online! How can I see if there is a demand for this in my area? Contact local hospitals? Dandelion-LOVE this idea-IF i were good at math (which I'm not :)) I so appreciate the info though milo-about to PM you, thanks-I've read your posts about this before LucyStoner-great combo of advice-would be wonderful to get benefits and help w/ tuition-hospital is high on my list now, thank you! You'll never know what a blessing this help is-thank you all!
  6. This is all great info-see, I wouldn't have even thought about the lifting! This is exactly the type of thing I need to take into account. I hadn't even heard of health information tech-please keep throwing all these at me!
  7. Queen-wow, I didn't realize that about the hospital! I will look into mine here (we have a few large hospitals) and see what's available, thanks!
  8. Shoot-I looked into it and there is no college for physical therapy assistant in my area :( I looked into dental assistant and the pay isn't very good in my area-about $15/hr.
  9. I'm 45 and need to go back to work full-time (I was a court stenographer before kids-no bachelor's degree, only worked at that for two yrs, just waitress/retail type jobs other than that). I have some time to prepare but hardly any money for school, etc. I wondered about physical therapy assistant as a career-does anyone do this or know someone who does? Can you share anything about it? (education, do you like it, salary, is it the type of degree one can do online-or are online degrees frowned upon in this field?, etc.) It seems to be a good salary for not a ton of time invested in school, etc. and I think it sounds fascinating. Also, would I be too old for what they're looking for? (I'd be almost 47 by the time I'd finish the schooling!) If you have other ideas for decent careers that are pretty quick to get into, I'd love to hear that too! (I'd need to support myself on this salary.) Thanks!
  10. I know Foerster's and many others do this, and it is something I want dd to know how to do-does TT Alg 1 teach it throughout? Thanks. I'm 99.5% decided on TT, but this would be the deciding factor. (I have no clue how to use one of those fancy calculators they need to know how to use!)
  11. I want to sign on to Netflix but I want to make sure the Duggars stuff is still on there! And they won't allow a search on the site until you sign up so I can't see for myself. Thanks!
  12. Mine never went back (youngest is 10 yrs old). And I am naturally pretty thin so it annoys me to have my waist small and my ribs large! Does anyone know if there is anything to do about this? I've often wondered about wearing a corset type thing while sleeping, or something like that! :)
  13. Awesome responses-thank you all so much! I'm going to read more about it and look into some place to go in our area that are safe trails.
  14. I previously used soap and water and now I'm thinking of switching to the alcohol because the water keeps screwing up my digital thermometers! (plus the alcohol is quicker) as for the germs lasting five days-sometimes when both kids are sick, I go from one to the other taking temps! (and sometimes with different viruses I don't want to spread!!)
  15. oh.........great.......forgot all about poison ivy and hunting season! lol I think we will just take up chess instead :)
  16. Well, you all are just rays of sunshine, encouraging me to go hiking! :D If the bears or twisted ankle don't get me, the ticks will!
  17. Well, I'm not having anxiety over it-lol! I was presenting those ideas of what could happen that occurred to my inexperienced-with-hiking-mind in a wondering sort of way-as in, are these things realistic to be concerned over or not? :) That being said, I don't feel confident that I could handle any challenge that comes up! Anyway, I like the idea of trying smaller trails first. I just know that my kids did enjoy the challenge of the big trail we did with the friend in Vermont (near Smuggler's Notch) We could definitely go w/ friends, but I was hoping this could be something the kids and I could do alone together-we need something like this right now to do together, just the three of us.
  18. The kids and I want to take up hiking and go sometimes during the week. We haven't hiked but a couple times-one was a pretty steep incline for a 7 hour hike w/ experienced friends and they loved that! So the physical part of us handling it isn't the problem. I just wonder if it's safe-we live near the Adirondacks but on the outskirts, so it would be just simple trails but maybe half-day long. I could look up what to bring with us for safety equipment, etc. But what about bears, or encountering an unsafe person that could hurt us (since we're alone out there), or if we got hurt badly while out there (I have zero first aid experience), etc. I'm just not sure it's a great idea.....anyone else hike alone with kids, or do you have any opinion about it?
  19. When you are saying editions 1 and 2, does that mean the original TT Alg 1 vs. the TT Alg. 1 2.0? Or are there two editions of the 2.0? What do I want, edition 2 of the 2.0? We can't afford the TT til after Christmas. She is fine with and wants to continue Saxon until then and we agreed we would commit to doing 1 lesson per day (instead of spreading 1 lesson over two days or not doing a lesson some days) and not miss any days. (That actually should get us almost to the end of the Saxon book.) I wish we could just take the placement test now and switch right over to TT, but at least knowing that relief is in sight should help both of us to carry on until we can get it. As soon as we get the money (2nd wk of Jan) we're going to order the TT. I do plan to be checking occasionally if she can do the problems in Foerster's, just for my own piece of mind! OhE, your post about CLE vs. TT was really helpful, thank you so much! Thanks to everyone for their input, and feel free to keep it coming!
  20. OhE, I remember that your dd can get math ok-I remember you saying she was doing Math Olympiad problems, etc, My dd could never even attempt a MO problem-she would look at it and melt into tears. And your E has had a good math foundation, with BJU, etc., over the yrs and she at least gets things conceptually to some degree. So you are right when you say that kids going into TT already strong are going to do well with it anyway. I just have to make sure we are not walking into another CLE situation for my dd. Which, as you say, I won't know til I try it. But the fact that she is already saying that it seems like CLE is code to me for "wow, this is great-I can whip through it and get done and be happy but not know how to figure out the tax in a restaurant". I'm seriously considering what Lolly said though-sit alongside during TT and add in my own stuff to make sure she's solid. At least TT as a BASE would be easier and not crushing her, as you mentioned, then add in.
  21. Lolly, when you say you teach every lesson with TT, can you please give me a picture of what that looks like in your house? Maybe me teaching TT to her is the way to do it that would make TT work for us- it would be easier for her than the Saxon or Foerster's but make me feel better that she is getting it fully and not just taking it at face value and not understanding. Thank you so much.
