  1. Shoot-I was hoping there would be a way. These are from a farm. The ones I tried to do today *were* two wks old, and still didn't work. Maybe I have to poach-I've never had luck with that either, but haven't tried it with these eggs. Any tips for poaching? Feel free to still chime in if you have a hard-boiling tip that works on fresh eggs!
  2. I've heard they're easier to peel when they're older, but ours are always very fresh. Any tips? I am losing most of the egg white when I peel it! Thanks!
  3. Laurie-thanks, that's actually a HUGE help to know Wmart has no solid lace-that was going to be the first place to check! That saves me time, thank you.
  4. Target? Penney's? Sears? TJ Maxx? Forever 21? Somewhere else? HELP! Need to find one pretty inexpensive (so not Victoria's Secret) tomorrow :) and I have no time to shop around. Have you seen one anywhere lately? Where would I have my best shot? There is no Frederick's of Hollywood nearby.
  5. Weird-after I posted, it started working again, and now it's back to doing the same thing again!
  6. I can get into it, but then can't get into any of the emails, compose, folders, etc.
  7. Thanks, everyone-she is *very* tentatively thinking nursing or physical therapy. I had planned the Apologia to be the only high school bio, but maybe if she sticks with either of those for career, the progression should be something like Apologia Bio, Chem, Physics, and then for senior year, a more in-depth (AP?) Bio, or maybe Anatomy and Physiology? I haven't even thought about high school science yet and have NO clue what I'm doing.
  8. I vaguely remember talk yrs ago of it not being adequate-now that I'm at the point of using it, wanted to double check on that. What is the general thought about Apologia Biology for 9th grade? I don't care if it's the *most* rigorous, but I don't want something on the high school transcript that is known not to be good. (It may be taught at our co-op, which would make sci a lot easier for me!)
  9. I cked Amazon-$20 for 10 petri dishes; didn't know they were so $$! I guess I'll have to fork over for it.... thanks!
  10. Christian materials great, but not necessary. Do you have something YOU have used for that age that you liked, or any other suggestions? It can be a variety of materials-doesn't need to be ONE set curriculum. Thanks!
  11. Is there only one kind of prepared petri dish to buy for experiments? We need some for science fair, but not sure what kind to buy and where to get them! We'll be taking samples for food borne bacteria, if that matters. Thanks!
  12. I can't cook it on high overnight-afraid the water will evaporate too much and it will burn the house down. Is it ok to cook on low all night (approx. 10 hours), or is the temp too low to avoid bacteria? I would *assume* it's safe, since that's what crockpots are for-long, slow cooking-but just want to make absolutely sure I don't feed my family bacteria soup! My immune system is compromised too, so that would be a huge disaster! The pot contains an already cooked chicken carcass and about 3 quarts of water. thanks!
  13. Me too-I ordered 3 Prime Eligible things on Wed, got two on Fri, and the other one got an email on Sat saying it would be here by this Wed. WHAT?! I hope this doesn't continue-sometimes I have to count on Amazon to get things here in time (like a bday present for kids to take to a bday party) because I have a chronic illness that doesn't allow me to get out sometimes. I agree with PP-we paid for two-day service. It goes back to my previous post a couple months ago in the thread where they raised the minimum to $35 for free shipping-my prediction in that thread was that they were pushing everyone to go to Prime, then they would introduce a Prime Premium or something like that where now you have to pay more to get it in two days. I wonder if this recent spate of increased shipping times is an introductory step toward that-they will do this and then start to say if you *really* want it in 2 days, pay for Prime Premium! I'm not saying this is what it is-it might just be increased usage, or temporary distribution problems, weather, etc.
  14. I'm always interested in having fresh breath :) I've used Extra for years but want something new, but don't want to try all the new gums out there-any suggestions for what you think works best AND lasts longest? Recs for breath mints are also great (not Altoids!) Thanks!
  15. Thanks-I know it would be hard for me (and my family) to do the regular recipes w/out the onion/garlic. Great tip on the Krishna sites, thanks! I appreciate everyone's ideas!
  16. Seems everything I cook has that in it, and we need to avoid them for awhile. Thanks! An example of what I mean is one I found is an apricot chicken stir fry that has ckn and broccoli slaw stir fried with a sauce of apricot preserves, soy sauce, ginger, and cayenne pepper over rice. It doesn't have any onion or garlic in it, OR in any of the ingredients (like a condensed soup used in a recipe would have onion in it, so that wouldn't work.) Need lots more though-any suggestions?
  17. Ds 5th grade, good at math, is in early in CLE 5 (mainly due to me being newly chronically sick this yr, plus trying to do MM too). The CLE/MM combo works well-we do MM together some days and every day he does CLE as independent work for spiral practice/review. CLE is the one of the two that gets done consistently every day because he doesn't need me. However, I know he's working kind of below level, and the CLE is super easy for him. I had him take the Saxon placement test, and he *easily* tested into Saxon 7/6-he only got one problem wrong on the whole test and it was something we hadn't covered (and it was an algebra topic-"Solve 30m=6000"). They could get EIGHT wrong out of 40 and still place in Saxon 7/6. I think he placed like that mainly because CLE is at LEAST a half a year ahead. (dd easily went from halfway through CLE6 into prealgebra-Saxon 8/7, and the first third of that was review!) So.....do I move him over into Saxon 7/6, which I think is a little more demanding, with better word problems and so on, or leave him where things are working well? He probably couldn't be quite as independent with the Saxon, which worries me due to my health issues.
  18. These replies helped me a lot, thanks! But now I'm afraid to ask the ortho-sounds like w/ the lab fees for the new Invisalign every 2 wks, he wouldn't be able to do it for free. :( And after offering to do the top for free due to our tight finances, I hate to now ask him a quote for Invisalign. Yuck about the breath smell! My dd just finished her treatment and got her retainers and they're both made of the Invisalign stuff, so I hope that doesn't happen to her! Thanks, everyone-feel free to still chime in with answers!
  19. I was at my busy primary care doc's office last Friday and the nurse said she (not sure if that meant the office or her personally-I guess that would make a difference) had diagnosed 5 positive cases of flu since Nov. I thought that was really low. (we're in upstate NY)
  20. Yes, I'm wondering about warmth now, and where we can go for that! Like how early can we go to Outer Banks or Georgia and be warm, etc. I'm thinking Cancun would be full of spring breakers. Atlantis would be great but not sure how to get deals for it! We have not been away for a week's vacation since our honeymoon 17 yrs ago.
  21. How much more expensive was it than regular? I can ask my ortho, but I don't want to bother if it's WAY out of the ballpark, especially since he said he would do the top braces for free for me (I'd rather have Invisalign on top, if possible, but I don't want to be weird and ask him it's way more $$). Pros/cons of Invisalign? I hardly need anything on top teeth, that's why he's throwing it in for free.
  22. This is all really helpful-thanks! I hadn't even thought about Mardi Gras! It looks like it will be hard to find good dates, and will have to instead find less crowded places. I hadn't thought of having to go so far south for weather! So we'd definitely need to do South Florida then, if we did, say early March? And yes, we LOVE Sanibel-honeymooned there, etc. BUT it is pricey :( What about any islands-I assume we'd get too many spring breakers in Jamaica, etc?
  23. We don't travel much so I have no idea! We want to go when it's less crowded, and certainly avoid college kids on break partying at the beach! Any tips? Also, would we be better off going through a travel agent like Liberty Travel? We don't care where we go and can go anytime it's cheapest, etc-just to a family friendly beach and we want cheap and on the ocean-we thought an agent could just figure it all out for us? (including what weeks to avoid partyers and crowds?) I know there are things like Priceline but we thought maybe an agent would have more insider's tips, etc?
