  1. I have heard a couple of good reviews concerning the Living Books Curriculum, but I'm not sure if I would choose it - a) because there's no high school, and b) because there are so many similar programs that are free.
  2. :iagree: I use mostly HUFI, with a splash of AO selections, and a few "custom" selections that I've chosen. Remember... HUFI only goes through Year 6, then you switch to AO. I second the recommendation of reading Planning Your CM Education.
  3. For my two youngest, around 45 mins to 1 hour. For my two middle ones, around 1.5 to 2 hours. For my two oldest dc, around 3 to 4 hours. In addition to this, all kids have an hour of group time at the very start of the school day, and a 30-minute "lunchtime lesson". And the oldest four are required to read independently for at least an hour in the afternoon. We do the bulk of out school in the morning, but sometimes we do spill over into the afternoon.
  4. Sunday through Thursday - normal (Tuesday is our co-op day but that only affects our eldest child) Friday - a lighter/ fun day, but we still do get a fait amount done Saturday - off for the Sabbath We like this schedule. It works for us. Schooling six days a week allows us to have free afternoons, and to get back on track more easily after a vacation or such.
  5. We follow the HUFI/AO schedule. So years 1-4 are a four-year cycle, then there is a year off to study non-Euro-Indo-Asian countries (i.e. all of the countries you never really hear about when studying history), then there is a six-year cycle (per CM), then year 12 is the ancients again - or elective.
  6. For those of you who simeltaneously use two or more science curricula with your child(ren)... which programs do you combine, and for what age levels? How and why do you combine? Thanks, SuperDad
  7. Thank you. That's very helpful. Just out of curiousity - WHY does a dead organism's nitrogen wind up as ammonia?

  9. Can somebody please define/explain the term "nitrifying bacteria" in very simple terms? My dc is having trouble understanding it because all of the definitions we can find are very wordy and difficult to interpret. Thanks very much.

  12. I have a niece in 4th grade and a nephew in 8th, both at ps. Both of their schools have a "good behavior party" every quarter and a "good grades party" every quarter. Additionally my nephew's middle school has a quarterly "zero tardy party" for kids who were on time to all of their classes. I don't support this type of incentive system at all. The kids are learning to get good grades NOT because it will go far in life, open many more opportunities up to them, and help them go to a great college if they choose that path, but because they'll get a party for it. This is completely the wrong message to be sending, IMO, and I don't understand why the teachers even promote these types of extrinsic incentives, let alone expect them to really work. I sincerely doubt that a student who is exhibiting unacceptable brhavior, or who has absymal grades, or who is consistently tardy, is suddenly going to become a "perfect student" merely because they'll get a 45-minute party.
  13. I'm considering various science programs for next year and stumbled across Mr. Q. It seems worth looking in to, but I'm having trouble figuring out the website. Can someone please explain the Mr. Q program to me, and, if you can, tell whether or not you liked it? Thanks very much.
  14. I would recommend looking into Bravewriter and CW. I definitely agree that IEW is a strong program, but I'd recommend it more for a reluctant and/or struggling writers.
