  1. we love MUS, started it 4 years ago, and love it, never felt the need to look for something else, so far we've gone through Alpha and where our oldest is now - Pre Algebra
  2. We are in our first year of Story of the World and doing The Ancients. I am teaching it to my Kdg, 3rd, 4th, and 8th grader. My 3rd and 4th graders seem close in 'level' although my 4th is a bit beyond my 3rd in writing, needless to say my Kdg and 8th are quite apart. We absolutely love Story of the World, its activity book and test booklet. You can tweak it and it even tells you how, referencing other resources, for example Usborne World History Encyclopedia. My kids write and draw every day during History, their levels of writing vary a lot but I've noticed my younger kids trying to write more, like their 8th grade sister. We have tried other ways to teach History to all of my kids & it was all just so "separated". I love how we are all in what we are doing together & my kids all do what they can, yet are everyday encouraged to do more. And I must add, that I was public schooled K-12, and never learned anything from world history, only American History!! So I as a mom & teacher am having so much fun teaching Ancient Egypt right now!
  3. math u see is our curriculum but we use ixl almost daily. I have 4 kids using it K=8 but it goes through high school, we pay less than $20 monthly and it has a very good system of reporting to you, the parent, what they have accomplished, areas of strengths and weaknesses, etc and is supposedly aligned to state standards for all of the states
  4. Thank you everyone for your feedback! We really could do this, making up for the year we started her late. I taught public school kindergarten for many years and decided (because my kids went to public school back then) to start her late because she was just not ready (emotionally) you know? We have never regretted that decision, she has always done very well academically, scores high on end of year tests (see - she's a year older than her grade level peers). We don't hold her back to "grade level" math, reading, etc - we pretty much just go and then keep going so she isn't bored or unchallenged. The only immediate thing I could think of at the time that would be affected is her sports, ours go by grade level, but she'll grow! lol! I wondered though if there could be something later on affected by the decision to skip a grade now, our oldest is only 13 so we haven't been down the high school and college road yet. However if she stays in this grade level she will turn 19 the month she graduates. I'm thinking too though that if we are going to skip this is the time to do it, it may be more difficult subject wise in middle school or high school. We have a ton of freedom, I'm a certified teacher home schooling and in my state it does not require much in the way of reporting, etc. Hmmmm.....we start in a week! I need to make a decision, thank you all for your input, it gives me a lot to think about and reassures me that we could do this!
  5. What are pros and cons to skipping a grade???? We started our daughter a year late, technically she's old enough to be a 5th grader, but doing 4th this year. Academics have always been easy, but not boringly so, we challenge her. Its a possibility, she is very motivated, and we could do both 4th and 5th grade this year. Are there any real pros though? Its not like she's bored because we move on. Sports would be a con, she's small for a 4th grader, would be even smaller for a 5th and we play sports year round...... Hmm...
  6. We withdrew our oldest in the middle of the year, I let them know on a Monday, we'd be doing it, asked if she had to attend 14 days more as per our 2 week required notice of intent to homeschool, our school said that wasn't necessary. I believe our requirement is really for before the school year. Colorado
  7. I taught public school Kindergarten for 7 years and we didn't follow a "curriculum", there really wasn't "one", there were "Kindergarten" Math books, yes, but to form understanding of concepts, kids this age need experience self directed & also teacher directed experiences with blocks, clocks, building, puzzles, counting, etc. We mostly followed our state "standards" for Math, check out your state's department of education website, their kindergarten standards should be listed there, I know mine, in Colorado, state many goals for kindergarten Math :) They can be a good guideline, and they are directly related to the First Grade Math goals, and so on.
  8. we also like Bible Study for All Ages :)
