  1. I've been looking through curricula for my son's first grade. Two, I've finally narrowed it down to two. Lightning literature grade 1 or Brave Writer with the Wand I've used lightning lit for middle grades and I'm thinking of using it for high school but I've also thought about Brave Writer for high schooler as well. So yeah. I don't know. Thank you for any and all help.
  2. There are lots of different styles to first grade here. I love reading over them. I'm still unsure what will work best with my son. With my daughter we used an all in one text book and I don't like that approach anymore. I've moved to eclectic with more literature/living books where I can. I worry that I'm over thinking and I go from too much to too little.
  3. If you could do first grade all over again what would you use? I'm completely redoing my first grade. My daughter is going in to ninth grade so it has been many years. I have some ideas on what I want to use but i'm curious to those who have done first grade a few times what is that you loved? What did you hate? What would you use now if you had to start first grade again? I'm looking for History Science Reading Phonics Handwriting Writing (if you did it) Grammar (if you did it) Spelling (if you did it) Logic (if you did it) Anything and everything.
  4. Hello all you lovely people It has been sometime since I've been on these forums and I had forgotten how much I missed them and all of you. I'm here to ask opinions since I'm kind of lost. Next year I'm going to have a young first grader (6) and an older ninth grader (15). So I'm going to post my ideas for the different subjects and I'd like to know if I'm doing too much, not enough, or something else all together. First grade Math: We are doing Math in Focus, it's going okay, but it jumps around a bit and is expensive. I was thinking of switching to Math U See or another Singapore math set. Science: Elemental Science grammar stage biology and/or Sassafras Science or Noeo Science biology 1 or ??? History/social studies: History Odyssey Level 1 Ancients or Adventures in America or ??? Phonics and spelling: All About Reading and All About Spelling Language Arts: Well I had a hole slew of things I'm thinking about but these are what's caught my eye at the moment. Lightning Literature grade 1, Write shop primary A, or Grade specific text books. Even after looking at all this I'm still thinking of BookShark or Oak Meadow or and now Wayfarers Ancient History. Ninth Grade Math: Math U See Geometry Science: Oak meadow biology or eScience Labs or ??? She doesn't like science all that much. History: Text book or Wayfarers or ??? She doesn't like history all that much either. Literature: Excellence in Literature II or Lightning Literature american series. Composition: Student writing intensive or ??? She does struggle with writing some what but she hates videos. Electives: These are all up in the air but 3D art, Java programming, Game design. I'd like to do a creative writing thing with her so she could just write for fun, but every time I try she writes three sentences and says she's done. They both have martial arts for physical activity. Thank you for any and all advice and help!
  5. I as looking in to this for my son. I think it will fit perfectly. Thank you so much!
  6. Well somethings have to be covered per homeschool laws of the state. The rest are ideas that will change as we get closer I'm sure. I try to let her follow her interests, but she tells me she hates history. She will read and do what I ask, but on her own she wouldn't touch it. So I need an idea on what to do.
  7. I have two years before my daughter is officially in high school. I want to do a literature based study for history, the catch is I want it secular. I know there are many literature based curricula, but they are all religious one way or another, especially for high school. So I'm looking in to different ideas to create a literature based history. Here are the things we are going to study, geography will be mixed in. Ancient History - My daughter is tired of Egypt, Rome, and Greece. Middle Ages - My daughter's favorite time to study. World History American History American Government Economics Previous curriculs. All About American History Vol 1 - 5th - Didn't like it. History Odyssey Ancients Vol 2 with CHOLL and Human History Vol 1 - 6th - Loved the literature, didn't like the encyclopedias. Sonlight Core E with added hands on projects - 7th - We shall see. Sonlight Core F with added porjects - 8th - Possible. Any help on books or places to look would be wonderful. Thank you!
  8. My daughter does all four different perplexors. She has never done logic before, but enjoys them more than logic liftoff, and requests to do them.
  9. Since I started piecing things together, I'm always using different things for schooling to see if they will work. Most of the things I use don't have next levels, really. K12 Human Odyssey, well after we do volumes 1 and 2, I want to do american history. I thought about using the K12 American History book and adding in extra reading books. Well my daughter isn't having fun with Human Odyssey. So I looked at Sonlight Core E to finish the American History we started, add in more reading books. Then I thought to do just the History and Read-Aloud for Core E, adding in a few readers and do Lighting Literature for literature. I started looking at the science I was going to use, Real Science 4 Kids, Focus on Middle School Science. I wasn't sure how easily we'd be able to do the experiments. I looked at Noeo, it has everything we'd need, that's a major plus. I looked at OakMeadow 7th grade science, it seemed like it'd be more home friendly then RS4K, but I'm not completely sure. So to my questions. Has anyone done Sonlight with Lightning Lit? Which would be more fun for us to do for science, Noeo, Real Science 4 Kids (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Astronomy, and Geology over 2 years), or OakMeadow Earth Science? Everything else I've figured out, just history and science always seem to trip me up.
  10. Our only isn't an only anymore, she has a younger brother after 9 years and 6 years of trying. I don't know if it's easier or harder now that we have a two year old. There will only be three or four years over lap of their schooling. So would that be homeschooling to singles? LoL I would like to have one more, but I don't know if that will ever happen.
  11. Thank you for the information. I guess we could try one and it doesn't work out we can try the other. Or a mix if need be.
  12. Hum, which would be good for grammar two times a week?
  13. I've looked at analytical grammar and think it might work well. I also found Winston grammar. How do they compare? My daughter is hands on, but also likes workbook type. We skip a lot in Hake grammar because she knows it really well and she is getting bored.
  14. Jan to april this year you can pay four payments over 9 months. I believe.
  15. My daughter just discovered diagramming sentences and she prefers that over everything else in Hake grammar. What would be another grammar to look at for seventh grade?
  16. I don't know what to do. My 2 yo wants to learn to read. I wasn't expecting to teach him until he was a bit older. I'm horrible without hand holding and a direction to go. My 11 didn't start reading until she had to and she wasn't proficient in it until last year. Even now she has difficulty reading out loud. HELP!
  17. I think one we get our tax return and a vacation out of the way, we will be ready to start 7th grade.

  18. So this is what I'm planning with my son. Sonlight P3/4 Whatever books we have around the house he wants read to him. Singapore Early Bird math. Tracing and arts and crafts too. I think that will keep us busy.
  19. Thank you all. I'm looking in to making up a mix and match curriculum for my 2 yo now.
  20. I feel so far away from everyone! ~waves from the Shaw/Sumter area~
  21. I'm so glad to see this new board!! My son is 2, he is counting almost to 20, knows his shapes, and working on his colors. He likes the alphabet but not as much as numbers. He loves books and always has. I'm wondering if getting sonlight p3/4 would be good for him? I'm already working through random workbooks with him when his sister is doing things on her own. I just need something to tell me what to do, if I don't it doesn't get done. I'm also wondering if adding an early math would be okay? Maybe use AAR pre-1 with him to help with his alphabet? I keep thinking he is so young, but he really seems to want to do it. My son is so different from my daughter, I don't know what to do!
  22. Here is the first chapter of my daughter's fanfic. Chapter one: What's Wrong with Ichigo? Ichigo walked in to the Café Mew Mew, but something was different, instead of getting to work she sat at the table. “Ichigo, it’s time to get to work,†said Lettuce. “Work?†Ichigo looks around, “I don’t work here.†She said. “Don’t you remember?†Lettuce asked. “No,†she answered. Ichigo was not like herself today, she usually went to work, except for today. “What’s wrong with Ichigo?†Lettuce whispered to Mint. “I don’t know, Ichigo usually gets strait to work and starts complaining that I’m not working.†Mint answered. â€She has a point†Lettuce said. â€What does that mean?†Mint asked. “Hey what’s wrong with Ichigo onee-chan?†Pudding asked coming through the door with Zakuro. “Pudding, Zakuro. We don’t know what’s wrong with her†Lettuce answered. Ryou hit her in the back of the head wale waking in with Keiichiro and said. â€Get to work.†“Hey†Ichigo said. â€Good morning everyone.†Keiichiro said. “Good morning†Lettuce said. “Something’s wrong with Ichigo, she’s not attacking like herself.†Mint expands. â€Really.†Ryou asked. â€Yes, can’t you tell? Even Pudding can tell. â€Lettuces said. After a long day of work, Kisshu flow in.†Where’s Koneko-chan?†Kisshu asked. “You may not want to know, she’s being weird.†Mint said.†What do you mean?†Kisshu asked. â€Why don’t you look for yourself.†Lettuces said. Kisshu looked at Ichigo.†Koneko-chan what’s wrong?†Kisshu asked. â€Who are you?†Ichigo asked. â€Don’t you remember me?†Kisshu asked worried. â€no†Ichigo answered. After that Pie and Taruto flow in.†what’s wrong Kisshu?†Tart asked. â€Ichigo doesn’t remember me.†Kisshu said upset. “Why?†Tart asked. “We don’t know†Zakuro said. Pie hummed “Maybe there’s something or someone did this.†Pie said. â€but who†Mint asked. But before anyone could think of a answer. â€There’s a Kirema Tree at main street!†Keiichiro Said. â€What! Did you make it Taruto?†Mint asked. “No†Taruto answered. “Then who did†Ryou asked.
  23. Wow, I'm sorry they are treating you like this. I was lucky that the people we talked to were nice. Are you contacting the closest council?
  24. Well, talking with my daughter we are going to tweak Sonlight to fit us. She likes the selection of books, and I've found arts and crafts to go along with it. She finally told me that America the Beautiful would have been too much like a text book for her. So Sonlight Core E with Trail Guide to US Geography and Experience US History. Adding Essentials in Writing 7 and Daily Grams 7 to finish language arts. Science is going to be Real Science 4 Kids, with added activities. Logic Perplexors since she enjoys them. Japanese since she wants to learn it. She looked at Oakmeadow, said yes, then looked at the sample then said no. So we will never be only pre packaged again, add and subtract to make it work for us. Now that it's figured out I'm DONE looking! I'm not sure if that will actually happen, but since we know what we want, I'm done looking for 7th grade.
