  1. My favorite is Dickens A Christmas Carol. We like The Night Before Christmas, The Christmas Troll, A candle in the Window, The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree, The Little Mouse Drummer, The Polar Express and Elf on the Shelf.
  2. I am doing Memoria Press K with my 3 1/2yo dd. We just started this week because she needed more. She loves Dover coloring books, especially the nature ones. We do play-do making letters and words out of it and numbers too. I have her doing chores around the house. She helps me switch the laundry out, fold laundry, unload dishes, sets the table, and helps cook/bake. We spent the summer doing FIAR with her, which she loved. We have 2 large wall maps for the US and the World, I ask her to find states/countries/continents. We also use The Man in the Map book. She does SongSchool Latin with her older brother and loves it. They have free coloring pages to go with it. She participates in all our history/science projects. She loves to count any objects. I often have her count/sort counting bears into groups. She loves do-a-dot paints, they have learning books to go with it. We play Hi Ho Cheerio, Monopoly Jr., Uno, Chutes/Ladders, CandyLand, and Connect 4. She also loves tic-tac-toe. Another great thing is the Phonics Lab by Geosafari, this one: http://www.amazon.com/Educational-Insights-GeoSafari-Phonics-Lab/dp/B0009QYSYY All the Williamson Kids Can books are great, they have every subject.
  3. Last year my middle son was 6. We read My Father's Dragon series. He loved Poppers Penguins. All my children love Roald Dahl, anything by him is fun to the kids.
  4. I don't do school while I am sick, but will do it if a child is sick. If they are sick enough to stay in bed all day they don't have to do school, but the other children do. If they have enough energy to run around and play there is no reason why they can't do school. For a surgery, if your child is super needy I might just take a break til Monday.
  5. My 6th grade son is doing everything independent this year. I wrote out lesson plans for him and he checks them off each day. His math has a DVD teacher. I do check all his work and make him redo things in the evening.
  6. This is wonderful. We are using Cats with my 7 year old, and the 6th grader tries to take a break from his work to listen. We also are taking our time with each chapter. I started with Cats, but I plan to go back and get Apples. We spent the first week looking at Constellations, also using math to count stars. This was a great way to introduce Millions to him. Also, last week we read about Fred buying a heater. He went to a store where the lady asked him how much money he had. He had $21 so she went into the back erased the $5 and wrote $21. After the Chapter my son asked me about that. He wanted to know why, so we discussed ethics and also how much more money she made. We looked up how cold it had to be to have frost inside, and discussed other temperatures. There is so much you can do with it, I agree.
  7. I am not a keeper, but I ended up regretting it this year. 4 years ago I was a size 4, then I had my 3rd child and ended up gaining a lot. I ended up with sizes 4-12 in my closet. I threw out all the 4-6 thinking I would never get back down, my goal was an 8. I went through a personal crisis in January and dropped 35 pounds. (I can't eat when I am emotional) Now I have had to go buy 4-6. I have kept the weight off by just not snacking all day. We also have found a love for Hiking, even the 3 year old can make it 5 miles.
  8. The Jungle Book, Viking Adventure, and Winnie the Pooh.
  9. We did BF Geography 2 years ago and I really liked it. For a plain workbook I like the Rand McNally one's, they have 2 different grade levels. Last year I did Geo Songs with ds7 and we both enjoyed that too.
  10. I read aloud 2-5 picture books to dd3 during the day. I also read her 1 story at night. I read 2 chapters to the boys from a history selection and also 1 chapter from a science selection daily. I also read to my middle child at night, usually around 20 minutes. Current selections are: Johannes Kepler, Norse Myths, and Jungle Book.
  11. Hi, I have lurked for awhile and just decided to join. I have 3 children whom I homeschool. My oldest is 11 (6th) and is using: Notgrass Exploring History, Saxon 7/6, Jashub's Journal, LLATL Tan, Gum Drops 6, Write with the Best, Apologia Astronomy, and various read alouds. So far this year he read Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, Around the World in 80, and is halfway through Raiders from the Sea. My next son is 7 (2nd) and is using: LOF Cats, SM 2A, Walking in Faith, and LLATL Red. He is also doing US Geography with 50 states Under God for Young Learners. We are using RS4K Chemistry. He is a struggling reader, but is doing well with The Primer by Treadwell. My daughter is only 3, but truly advanced. She is doing MP K. I substituted the Math for Living Math lessons from Queen Homeschool. After Halloween we are all going to start A Living History of the World that I found on Queen. Once the boys have finished their own science books (by December) we are going to do Nature Study using guides from Queen. I have Pagoo and Oakie the Oak tree. My 6th grader will finish Jashub and start Hidden Treasures in Philippians around November. My younger 2 are going to do SongSchool Latin. My oldest takes French lessons and Piano. I could use any advice for my middle child. He is a very Kinesthetic learner. I would love ideas for LA. Thanks! Lauren
