  1. What would that be? I'll start: Florida - St. Augustine Here's one of many links explaining what to see/do while there. http://www.northbeachcamp.com/attractions.html Hope to hear from the 50 states! I hope to make a geo lesson for my dc based on your responses. Thanks!
  2. I just received their catalogue and see that they have spelling workbooks and spelling lists (I'm interested in grade 6). Are these any good? My dd just said she would like something like this. We have been doing the Calvert spelling CDs. Thanks.
  3. She does well in all outside activities and does well whenever she WANTS to. She just usually doesn't want to exert herself. Maybe I should cut out the activities.
  4. Latin Prep 1 (does not work independently at all; we are only on page 1 of chapter 2 after 8 weeks of school) Rosetta Stone Spanish and Latin Writing Tales 1 (she is behind in writing, does a sloppy job and takes a long time) R&S Math 5 (can do it just makes lots of silly mistakes - I make her do it over but again, it takes hours) Singapore Science 5A & B SOTW4 (she fusses about outlining and writing a paragraph - it takes hours) Literature: We are going through the WTM reading list for her grade and the suggested reading in SOTW4. Other: outside science class, gymnastics, tennis, piano, opera, choir, church. She completed her Logic Liftoff, Daily Vocabulary workbook, and Calvert Spelling 6 (she mispells words on assignments that she knows how to spell all of the time) Maybe I should give her more/harder work?
  5. Is it just me or does every family have one dc that pushes buttons? My dd/11/grade 5 is that one. Practically every post asking for advice here for the last 4 years has been because of this dc. I have others and it is no problem teaching them. I know she is smart. She tested for the gifted program in PS and is extremely clever when she wants to be. She will not work hard. She will not go for the A. She won't use her best handwriting. She does not check her work. She writes at a 3rd grade level. She is doing minimal work with minimal effort and it takes FOREVER. I am SO frustrated. I'm losing faith. Sorry if you are just sick of my posts.
  6. We can't stop reading/learning about the civil war! The dc are obsessed, and so am I. I am looking for some good (EASY) project ideas - please share. Also, what am I going to do about completeing the entire book this year?
  7. My ds5 can read most words in first readers and sound out anything he does not know. I read to him every day and have him read to me. He does not want to do the work and refuses to read to himself even when he knows the words by heart. We are all big readers here, love reading, and do not know what to do with this. Please help.
  8. What is the newest WTM? Is it significantly different than the original? Is another updated version in the works? Thanks
  9. I have a dd going in to 6th grade. she has done some workbooks from the logic liftoff series. I think we have to move into something meatier now. Please do not recommend yhe Martin Cothran cds - he puts me to sleep! TIA
  10. I just signed up to participate in nanowrimo but now I cannot figure out how to actually input my writing. Do I type it up in word and then transfer it in? Do I type it in directly? What do I click on? Please help! I am already behind and can't figure out HOW to do this.
  11. In my neck of the woods, it is traditional to wear black, navy blue, dark gray, dark brown (somber colors) at a funeral. Sometimes I see someone wear something with a little white in it, but the basic outfit is dark. Now, I realize that there is nothing to this except tradition. I know that in other societies, people have other colors to represent mourning. But in this society, dark colors represent mourning. Would it seem strange to you if someone raised with this tradition chose to wear head-to-toe white (literally) for a funeral? I have attended a funeral where every person (over 500) was dressed in all dark colors and one person from the same social group wore all white. I have seen this person wear dark colors for other funerals. I just find it curious. Any ideas?
  12. I need to do something like a juice fast for this coming week. But, I do need to keep 1/2 cup of coffee in the AM (I know I should give it up). Help!!!
  13. "skip." I am not looking to "skip" work, just move her quickly up (she wants it and is willing to do the work). I'm just curious about what we have to work through to make it workable and really prepare her to be the new grade. Right now she is wizzing through her 5th grade work and plans to start the 6th grade curriculum in January. For 5th we are doing: SOTW4 Logic Vocab Spelling Writing Latin Memorization - geo, poems, speeches Science All of this is getting done every day - multiple lessons. So, for 6th grade from January to June what should I do? For example, can't I just stay with SOTW4 and go deeper, do more written work, reading etc? Her logic was 4-6 grade done in one week. Her 5th grade spelling - all 36 lessons done in four weeks. The daily vocabulary 5th grade - 36 lessons done in four weeks. So, what next? Thanks.
  14. When one of your dc skips (or wants to) skip a grade, how do you do it? Do you have them do double duty on all subjects? Do you test them out of a grade? How do you show that they have the knowledge or have done the work for the grade skipped and are "allowed" to be in the new grade. My dd age 11/5th grade keeps insisting on moving up to 6th grade. I have already received opinions on this. Now, I am just looking for the logistics to do this if we choose to do so. Thanks.
  15. I did not say I was getting these things from the campaigns - I did say from supporters both through emails and in conversation. I am dealing with intelligent educated people on both sides and I have repeatedly heard the racist or anti-american comments either directly or inferred. And yes, a person can infer that if an Obama supporter says that everything about Obama is great but there are still people who are going to vote gainst him because of his race that they are implying that I cannot have another reason for not voting for him. The same holds true on the McCain side.
  16. A. I am an anti-intellectual racist if I don't drink the Obama kool-aid. B. I am a dangerous anti-American intellectual elitest if I don't drink the McCain kool-aid. I just love being shoved into little bitty boxes. Every email I get from an Obama supporter supports opinion A and every conversation I have with a McCain supporter supports opinion B. Neither one represents my views and I have had enough of their supporters villifying anyone who does not agree with them - including me. Just for the record, I am a non-racist, country-loving, intellectual who thinks neither candidate is worthy of the office.
  17. But, is there an option - other than IEW - that you can recommend to follow WT2? My eyes glaze over on the IEW site - it seems like a lot of work and somewhat complicated. I am afraid it will sit on my shelf.
  18. My goddaughter has EVERYTHING except a collection of "must read" children's classics. I know her mom has bought her the Madeline series and some princess stuff but I want to get her a dozen "must reads" for her mom to read to her. When I asked my friend what books she had loved as a child, the only one she could remember was a collection of Hans Christian Anderson (which she has on hand) and Judy Blume (UGH). Please share your "must-reads" for a 4-5 year old girl. Many thanks.
  19. Can I use WT1 for 5th grade and WT2 for 6th grade? Would that cover grammar as well (we are doing LP1 also)? OR Do we need a separate grammar? What would I do after WW2? Thanks.
  20. I'd like to change up my repetoire and have 5 - 10 easy/nutritious recipes I can always have on hand. pancakes pound cake and/or quick bread soup salad casserole meal for a crowd cocktail appetizer I've got recipes for regular stuff. I am looking for things that are ALWAYS a hit with your family/friends and are not the usual fare. Many thanks.
