  1. Hi, I own and will use all the SOTW and also A Little History of the World. Also have the IEW Poetry Memorization program I am looking for all of your favorites in all subject areas. We will be on the road for months and my dc LOVE to learn in the car. Please share your favorite math, science, geography, poetry, history, literature, etc., recordings - they can be pure memory work stuff, songs, stories, whatever. DC will be 12, 9, 6, 4. Thanks.

  3. will be 12, 9, 6, 4. I do not want to do a survey like SOTW again (did it, loved it) but rather in depth units on just these ancients. I want to spend a month a time eating, dressing, reading, mapping, doing activities, etc. and am looking for resources: books, project kits, easy recipes, ideas. Thanks. I hope to get some favorites. :001_smile:
  4. Just trying again. I've gotta believe the hive would have "best of" for this. I promise to do them chronologically! :D
  5. and have for the last 20 years. I try not to let it get me but sometimes it's hard not to be a crab. BUT, that's old lady talk, so let me tell you something else.... My favorite food my whole life has been a jumbo shrimp cocktail. I could eat 20.
  6. I am so grateful for all of the encouraging posts. I read some before I walked out the door. It was unpleasant but I did get through and will remember Hornblowers words for the future! My mother did start a bit of a scene in the lobby of the theater (!!!) but I whispered that I WAS NOT having it and she piped down! My sister tried to guilt me about not going out to dinner after (UGH) but I held my own and did not go. I also listened the to great advice for a treat with my poor dc. We went for sushi & gelato after! Can't thank you all enough!
  7. Please do not preach, or tell me how lucky I am, or to make the best of it...I know all that and just want friends who know that I will behave well but that inside I will be dieing. I have to go sit with my bio family for the next three hours. They are all crazy. For some really dumb reason I felt compelled to say yes to this outing. I have not spoken to my mom in a month because of her last hysterical fit in my house in front of my children. My sister - the tyrant - is hosting us to a live production of A Christmas Carol and bought the tickets and will be IN CHARGE of all of us. I have to go solo with my four dc because dh (who would have helped as buffer) had to go in to work, Oh, my sis is POd that my dh isn't going even though he has to go to work today - OBLIGATORY. I would get drunk except that I have to drive. (That is said in jest) I may throw up though.
  8. anyone familiar with this book? If not, do you know a good children's history of ancient Israel? TIA
  9. Please share resources you would use to do unit studies on the ancients. For example, if I wanted to spend one-two months each on Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans, and Chinese what would I do/read to immerse us? Thanks.
  10. If so, with what and for how long? Thanks.
  11. Pork Shoulder Arm picnic Cut in Cubes? That's what the package says. It is sitting in my freezer and I do not know what to do with it. Simple ideas preferred. :)
  12. She was so glad and cried and cried! We then spoke about what she wanted to do with the things that spoke to her. I also shared how I loved the pioneer life when I was her age and pretended to farm the land, wore prairie dresses, and longed for potatoes cooked right on the fire. :) Again, she was so glad. She likes that people were self-sufficient, made everything with their hands, and lived in close communities. She said she did not like industrialism, suburban sprawl, and processed products! We talked about how she could use this self-knowledge for her future - be an environmentalist, a green architect, an urban planner for small development, an attorney for preserving historic sites and small communities or farmers. She liked this a lot. And, she says she is throwing out all of her jeans and wearing prairie skirts from now on, along with the baking and sewing. Thanks for all of the encouraging responses.
  13. She is 11 and has just read through the entire Little House series. She is sad that God did not let her be born during pioneer times. She wishes we lived in a simple place , everything was made from scratch, she was learning how to sew, and could have farm animals. Reality check: we live in a BIG city, shop at Whole Foods, we do not own a needle and thread, and have not one pet! I said "Go for it!" Learn to bake and sew, grow a vegetable garden, dress in prairie dresses. Is she a romantic? Do other girls get worked up like this? What do you do with a child who longs for (feels a part of) the past?
  14. My dc all chose to give up their gift $ to make a donation to needy children. They chose all of the gifts of food, water, malaria tents, etc. and think that there will be nothing under the tree. BUT, I have managed to reserve a little bit and have secretely bought stockings to fill with tiny treats, plus one small toy and two new books each. I am not putting anything out - even the tree - until the 24th after they are asleep. When they wake on the 25th, it will all be there. Not a lot, but sweet! (I figure I can get a small tree cheap on the 24th). :001_smile:
  15. This is all so helpful and encouraging. I am going to start fresh tomorrow and see how we accomplish learning Latin together. I will be coming here with questions!:001_smile:
  16. and try to figure it out. I know it's important and I do think it is interesting. I just need the big picture. I wish there was a poster with some kind of diagram or grid that shows how everything relates to everything else. I probably do need the dvds. Thanks for all of the hand-holding. :001_smile:
  17. Boy, do I try. We have gotten through Prima Latina and have started with Latin Prep. I love the program but past chapter one, I am lost. I cannot wrap my mind around the declensions, cases, etc. I literally have NO idea what they are talking about. So, I cannot really teach it to my dd/11 because I cannot answer any of her questions. She does Rosetta Stone Latin on her own and has a lot of vocab memorized but obviously we have to deal with the grammar of the thing! I just do not know how you guys do it. It is a thorn in my side. I get how important it is. I want it for my dc and I can't figure it out! I feel like such a dunce!!!:confused::confused::confused::confused:
  18. They had van Loon and I did not love his Story of Mankind. I wonder if Stauss, Guerber, or MB Synge are like Van Loon or different. Thanks for the responses so far.
  19. My boy has a castle full of men. He wants women - damsels - for them to marry! I seem to be looking in all the wrong places. Please help.
  20. Any recommendations? What should I look for? Where to buy? (Preferably online). TIA
