  6. I have a dd/8 who is an excellent student in every subject - both willing and able, BUT, she cries through math. I have tried the backing up and doing simpler work - she does it using her fingers, thinking long and hard, crying. I am wondering if I should just drop it for a while but that seems so counter to everything I know and have read. Besides, how would we pass the year-end evaluation if I have no math to show the teacher? I could also try a program like Kumon. A hs mom told me it helped her dds. Thoughts?
  7. thank you for sharing your ideas and pov! I am going to go think hard before I sit down to plan.
  8. I bought all of this curriculum, am thinking about more curriculum, know I have to organize the how I will use the curriculum, and I can't do it! I have been giving myself the SIMPLIFY speech and then I talk myself out of it with the MISSED OPPORTUNITIES speech. I am going to list everything I presently own and everything I am considering, and everything I am worried I am missing and PLEASE, you tell me where to start: 11 year old, 5th grader OWN: SOTW4 with AG Latin Prep Writing Tales 2 R&S Math 5 Rosetta Stone Spanish Memoria Press French Calvert Spelling CD 5 Memory Work - geography, poetry, facts Singapore Science 5 Lift-off Logic Lots of Literature Piano Guitar Tennis Gymnastics Art CONSIDERING GWG 5 (completed 3 and 4) Something for learning outlining WORRYING ABOUT She wants to do all of these activities, but I also have three other dc and it gets busy - she will be very upset if I cancel any That I will not have time to actively TEACH her and the others and get it all done I am starting the year tired. I am ready to give up before I even start. Am I missing teaching her something she needs to know. Please help! Thanks.
  9. What do you think about doing the Greeks for a year for 7th grade? If so, what would you do, what would you use to cover history, literature, art, etc. We could also start Greek. Is it overkill? Thanks for your thoughts.
  10. She says she knows it was wrong and that she won't do it again. She asked for forgiveness and forked over the money. Her cousin told her she's not allowed in her room anymore because she does not trust her. DD claims she was mad at cousin for saying "shut up" (DD interupts and argues a lot so I can see cousing losing it and saying "shut up.") and decided to get her revenge while also justifying it as "travel money for her family." UGH! Where is she getting this? There is NO WAY she is learning this from DH and I - NO WAY. We work hard and are constantly giving it away to others - to help! We are constantly talking about letting God be the judge and not judging others or taking revenge. I printed out what petty theft charges would mean in the state of Florida for a juvenile. We talked about the absolute wrongness of this behavior. DH spoke with her when he got home. We pointed out how her sister quickly and completely forgave her and asked how she would feel/react if someone had stolen from her. She readily admits that she would be furious, would not be quick to forgive, and would be suspicious of the other person. This is the kid who is regularly accusing others of taking things, doing the wrong thing, etc.. even when they are not. When talking about her little brother, who came to her defense begging that she not be punished (by taking her souvenier money), she said she suspected he did that to get "good attention" from me but not because he really meant it. :001_huh: Honestly, I just can't stand her right now. I had to leave the room. I don't know what to do with her heart and I pray my heart will change. Right now, I do not like what I see.
  11. DD11 stole $100 from her cousin and $20 from her sister - all in the last 24 hours. She says she knew what she was doing was wrong but did it anyway because we could use it toward our summer trip.:001_huh: This is NOTHING that would even enter our universe. DH and I are completely dumbstruck that this could even happen. We have not doled out a consequence (besides returning the money immediately and confessing to cousin/sister) because we don't even know what to do. It never occured to us that our kid would do this. Naive, huh? Please help. Thanks.
  12. I just signed up and already it is the best $20 I have spent on hsing - and I have spent a lot of $20s! Thank you WTMers for posting about this site!! enchantedlearning.com - check it out.
  13. I probably do not drink enough water. I will work on that today and see if it helps. Regarding the teeth-grinding, wouldn't I know I was doing it? Wouldn't there be some other senssation? I am seeing a doc on Tuesday and will also ask him. Thank you for all of the answers so far. If there are any other ideas, please share.
  14. I have tried different pillows, we have a year-old mattress, the temperature is comfortable. I go to bed around 11:30 and get up at around 7:00. The headache starts while I am sleeping - I dream about the pain. By the time I am ready to get up it is awful. The pain starts at the base of my head/neck in the back and then goes up throught the middle of my head to my forehead. Then, it radiates down the sides. Any idea? I am tired of having Tylenol for breakfast. Thanks.
  15. I speak out loud in other voices. I let my inner schizo out.
  16. I live in an area where you could saddle a roach and ride it in to town. However, you would think that after so many years, I would just deal. I keep an immaculate house - motivated by my roach fear. I lay pest traps down regularly - motivated by my roach fear. I jump out of my skin if I see anything brown (like a leaf) - out of roach fear. I open doors/cupboards ready to do battle - out of raoch fear. I keep stashes of roach spray in every part of the house - out of roach fear. Reality is, I only see one about 3- 4 times a year, BUT, these things are awful. Huge. Gross. And the fly! AT. YOU. Not away from you. NO. They run or fly AT YOU. AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!
  17. I have wall-to-wall sisal in my bedrooms. It's beautiful except that it stains easily. If water gets on it you have a permanent stain - ugh! Well, ds 2 recently wizzed on the sisal. It was a lot and formed a big, round blotch on the sisal. Then, it disappeared!! No permanent stain - nothing. How can this be? What is in the pee? How can I use this info to clean the sisal without asking my little boy to pee on the floor while mommy "cleans" it? Seriously, does anyone know the answers?
  18. We're a year off but I am already stressing. Will I need a tutor - I am math challenged. Please share what a 6th grader learns for math to be ready for 7th. Thanks.
  19. I will be in Germany for one day. I'd like to be able to say basic courtesy phrases in German before launching tinto English. Hello How are you? Thank you. You are welcome. My name is It is a pleasure to meet you. Where is the Old Town? Where is the bathroom? Where is the river? Do you speak English? Anything else you think I should know. Thanks!
