  1. with different denominators. DD is not understanding the way it is explained in Singapore. I want to make sure it makes sense to her. Thanks.
  2. I have not seen an internist in a long time. The weight is from the last baby who is now two. I have stayed about 10 lbs. heavier since that birth. I have tried to lose the weight but it has not come off.
  3. My tongue has either gotten bigger or my mouth has shrunk. Just in the laste year I have found that my tongue no longer lays within my teeth. I am constantly biting the sides (so gross) and it is all chewed up (even grosser). The dentist says my bite if fine and aligned. What has happened to me? What can I do? Sorry if you are grossed out.
  4. She is lost. For example, she has memorized 4+4=8 but is always "surprised" when she is handling manipulatives. It's as if she does not SEE that four and four more will always actually make eight. Once 10 comes into it she is completely flumoxed. No matter how many times I show her a group of ten with tangible objects and show her to count up the ones, she has to start all over again.. She does not retain that there is a group of 10 and then some more. When we have tried adding 5+4=9, 5+14=19, she can do the first because it is memorized, but she does not get the concept of the second AT ALL.
  5. My dd age 7 is really struggling with basic math concepts. At first I thought it was a memorizing math facts problem, but no, she can memorize them, she just doesn't "get" them. We have tried numerous programs and use manipulatives, real life math, have taken breaks, etc, but she just does not make the connections. She is above grade on all other subjects and has no apparent learning disorders. I am wondering if this is a maturity thing...should I just "drop" math for a while? Does anyone advocate this? I know that you play games in K but what if I only did math games? I get hung up on the grade. She can't get past single-digit addition and subtraction. My ds 5 understands more math than she does and dd age 10 was doing simple multiplication in 2nd grade (I am not pointing this out to her, I am just stating it here to explain part of my anxiety). She wants to understand and works in earnest. It is just not making sense to her. Thank you for your advice.
  6. blank pages bound together? I want the dc to be able to write (on the lines) and then sketch (on blank) in the same journal. I only ever find one or the other. Thanks.
  7. use the math copywork. I think she will like that. :)
  8. My dear dd age 7 is struggling in math. We have tried so many programs: MUS, Developmental, Singapore, Evan-Moor, Saxon and others. None of it clicks. Each problem seems like it is the first time she has seen it. She is so ahead in every other subject - grammar, history, geography -- she has memorized every country on the globe and can't remember what 6 + 7 is. She is a fantastic reader and loves to learn. She is trying hard. I do not know what to do. I need something simple and straightforward that will make the lightbulb go off in her head. Please help! We need it. Thanks.
  9. she takes a long time to do the work. It is probably 30 minutes worth of work but not done in 30 minutes.
  10. In history we have done one rotation of SOTW and CHOW with A LOT of additional reading. In Latin we have done: PL, Elementary Latin, Rosetta Stone Latin and are using Getting Started with Latin. We are considering Latin Prep 1 next. Writing is surprisingly painful. DD is very well read, gets grammar and spelling and is very verbal. She is also free to type or write as she pleases. The second she "has" to write something - she blanks. As far as literature, we are working our way through all of the recommended readin in WTM per grade. We are all BIG readers of classic literature. I am not doing anything more than discussing it with her. Should I? Thanks.
  11. In an tempt to simplify, I want to do this: Daily: Writing/Composition - 1 hour Math - 1 hour Latin - 1 hour History/Geography - 1 hour On-going: For science dd will keep a Nature Journal on animals and plant life in our region. We will collect, photograph, read about, sketch, write about this throughout the year. Activities throughout the year (outside of the home): Art Piano Tennis Gymnastics My questions: Can it be this simple? What to use for writing? DD is a VERY RELUCTANT writer. Do I try SWB's new book? Writing Tales? Other? What about history? Do I redo SOTW? Or, use FMR, FMG, FMMM? Or, follow WTM Kingfisher outlining? I want to keep it simple. I will tie in the geo to the history. I will also have narrations from history I think. I want my Latin program to cover all Language Arts/Grammar. Recommendations, comments, advice, etc. will all be appreciated. I will also be hs grades 3 and K. THANKS!
  12. I have a dd who will frequently say the wrong answer (over and over) even though I know that she knows the information. It is like some sort of short circuit. Then, she gets mad and defensive when I point out that she misspoke. A second later she'll do it again. It is so frustrating and I do not know how to help her or what it even is that would cause her to do this. This is not new just getting ridiculous. Please help.
  13. Happy Scribe. Do you integrate it with a history program? If so, what and how? Does anyone just use it with living books? What ages/grade are these best for? What do you NOT like about them? Did anyone buy them and then not use them? If so, why? They look good to me but I buy too much curriculum and then watch it sit. Don't want to do that again. Thanks.
  14. that I didn't pay attention to the end. I kept wondering why it was x4 - duh! I would have taken the extra step and done x3 then + 1 more because I am not math efficient. Thanks everyone!!!!
  15. In the Singapore 4A textbook they have the following problem: Sean has 1135 stamps. He has 3 times as many foreign stamps as U.S. stamps. How many stamps does he have altogether. They go on to work out the problem as 1135 x 4 = 4540 total stamps. OK - here's the thing, I would have done the problem as 1135 x 3 = 3405. Why is it x4 if it is 3 times as many? I feel like a total dork asking this. Please be gentle. Thanks.
