  1. It depends upon your child's learning ability and willingness to work. I started WWS with my dd at the beginning of '12 and she's scheduled to finish it the second week of September. She did R & S 5 for the 11/12 school year and R & S 7 for the 12/13 school year. Some of the lessons in 7 are review, so we combined two lessons for those. I did have her do the writing lessons in R & S as it gave her opportunity to apply skills she'd learned in WWS. She struggled with some of the lessons in WWS, so they took longer than the suggested day to do them. If you want to do The Creative Writer at the same time, I would plan to take more time to get through the books.
  2. If you'll notice, on P. 375, it says to write down the exact words that the source uses and then look at your notes as you write. What I had my dd do was direct quote a phrase and then put it into her own words. If it was common knowledge, I didn't make her footnote the information. Then I had her use another source for a direct and indirect quote.
  3. My dd is 13 and in 7th grade. We've been working through WWS 1 since January of 2012. Here's her composition on Julius Caesar (Caesar final) from Week 29, Day 4. I used the rubric provided in WWS 1, but I didn't grade it. I find it difficult to be the teacher who gives the assignment and then the parent who helps the student comprehend the assignment and then again be the teacher who grades it. With that in mind, I encouraged my dd to make sure she followed all of the instructions in the lesson. Sometimes I had her read them several times to ensure that she was adhering to them. I made her proofread her own work, and after she had done that, I addressed the mistakes that she had missed. The Caesar.doc is her first composition for Week 29, Day 2, Step 3. BTW, this assignment took over two weeks for her to complete. I would love feedback. :001_smile: Caesar final.doc Caesar.doc
  4. I'm so glad this thread was revived. I've been struggling as to whether or not to continue using WWE. We have about 8 more weeks of lessons in level 2. My 8 almost 9 year old sometimes cannot answer the questions even after I've read the passage to him a few times. Is this normal for a boy his age? About the summary exercise - some days he can do it and other days he can't. And the dictation - I can't even recall the exact words in a 10 to 15 word sentence after hearing it twice. How important is it to write the sentence word for word as long as the meaning is there and the sentence is grammatically correct?
  5. My daughter is currently in Algebra 1/2. I'm planning ahead for the next 2 years and wondering which editions of Algebra 1 & 2 I should use. I'm aware that if I use the 3rd editions, then the next course would be Adv. Math. I also realize that if I use the 4th editions, the next course would be Geometry. Has anyone used the 3rd editions and wished they had used the 4th or vise versa? Another question I have is regarding Algebra 2. What's the difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions?
  6. Hi, I tried to send you a pm, but your box is full. Are you still interested in the WWE book?

  7. Janny, I'm going with Algebra 1/2 as suggested by Art Reed.
  8. Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I should have mentioned that 11/12 was our first year of hs. When my Dd took the placement test LAST year she missed 5 or 6 questions in both Math 7/6 and Math 8/7. I placed her in 7/6 to fill in the gaps. I figured if the placement test was good enough for last year, it wouldn't hurt this year. I'm worried that if I put her in 8/7 that she will be bored. Most of Math 7/6 was a review for her, which I know doesn't hurt, but one of the reasons I'm homeschooling is so that my children can advance at their own pace.
  9. I'm curious as to why you're going to continue in R&S 6 if your son's already done 3, 4, and 5? It looked to me like 6 is a repeat of 5? My dd did well in 5 and I'm thinking of skipping 6.
  10. I thought I would add that SWB recommends a grammar program along with WWS. My dd just finished 6th grade, but I had her in 5th grade R & S grammar. She learned so much! I don't think I'll put her in grammar 6, though. It looks like a repeat of grammar 5. Oh, and if your dd doesn't know the parts of speech or how a word can be multiple parts of speech, then WWS is going to be frustrating.
  11. I've read some older posts about this question, but I have a different twist to it. My dd just finished Saxon Math 7/6. She scored above 90% on her last 5 tests. She took the Math 8/7 placement test and aced it. I think she would do fairly well on the Algebra 1/2 test, too. From the older posts I read, it sounds like Algebra 1/2 is a repeat of Math 8/7 with a little bit of Algebra thrown in. Would it be too much for her to go straight to Algebra 1 or should she do Algebra 1/2 first? BTW, she's going into 7th grade.
  12. I think that Mystery of History Vol 1 does a fine job of teaching biblical history interspersed with world history without reference to religion.
  13. I have tons of used baby girl clothes that I would like to sell for a reasonable price. PM me if you're interested.
  14. Hi! I tried to PM you but your box was full. I'm just checking to see that you got my payment & that the shipment is on it's way?

    Thanks

  15. I'm new to home schooling and thinking of using Math U See for my 7 year old boy. Do I really need to have the 2 sets of manipulatives that the program recommends?
