  1. Have you and your husband asked yourselves whether she wants to go to school? Not every child thrives in homeschooling.
  2. You could always have the older child do it formally and the younger participate in labs and receive oral explanations of the whys.
  3. We technically are finished--had my review and all paperwork is turned in--but my kids don't know. If I told them about the review, . . . well, you know how that would go.
  4. I didn't read all the replies, but: Search his name in sex offender registries. Find out where he came from and search there as well.
  5. Why baking soda? I'm a huge iced tea drinker and I've never heard of that!
  6. My children. 3rd and 5th, both did level 4 this year and would do 6th next year together. We did the QAF all together, the kids taking turns with the sentences and then each doing the sentence the other just did . . .. I was a great way to cement a lot of memorization. I definitely would put them at the same level and tweak as needed in the writing exercises to keep your daughter more challenged in that arena. Shurley even has hints throughout the program about how to teach the same concept to different competence levels. Tell your daughter you're not holding her back, merely streamlining homeschooling so that you ALL can learn exactly what is needed and then have more free time to spend reading, gardening, playing outside, whatever free-time activity you cherish as homeschoolers.
  7. I see him in my palm, a small tarsier listening to the sounds around him. His long, delicate fingers and his immense eyes looking at me, questioning what I am. His compact figure, soft and timid. His small, subtle nose smelling the air around him, trying to figure out his surroundings. He clings to my palm with a firm, but nervous grip, trusting, but uncertain of my intentions. I would change smelling to smell bcs there are too many --ing verbs in a row. I know the next sentence uses "clings" but then it goes back to --ing with "trusting." A very nice paragraph overall. I agree, however, that she must NOT write sentence fragments on any standardized test, no matter how well they flow into the paragraph's style. It's not worth the risk.
  8. He could write a some laws and consequences that your family follows (and also some that he wishes you follow) and type them up for keyboarding practice. Even better, he could play with font and spacing to make them look more menacing or official. My son had fun doing this for our family.
  9. Harraps. No hesitation here. I've had my hardcover since 1980s, which contains phrases as well as words, and recently bought a current paperback to use with the French class I teach. Harraps.
  10. It does cost. Go to http://www.veritaspress.com for their fee schedule and book costs.
  11. Isn't it funny that so many boys are enrolled? I wonder how many girls? The last post--capable but unmotivated--certainly reads as if I wrote it about my son. Interaction and accountability to someone other than me are true as well.
  12. I don't know, Annabanana, I guess we have to see whether this class moves forward. You might have to teach next year as well, when Veritas will be offering Algebra II for Swimmers since my son is studying math on the traditional track of plopping Geometry in the middle of the algebra years. What about the other Jacobs Geometry aids??? Anyone order anything??? AND is everyone prepared for online geometry with a Digital Scribe? Anyone have a Mac?
  13. Not that I'm at all selfish, but YES, transfer into the Tu/Th Geometry for Swimmers class! (I wish I remembered enough at this moment to write a pithy comment about something they'll learn to apply to swimming but I can't w/o risking unwittingly referencing trig or calculus.)
  14. As I wrote yesterday, VP emailed that the course is definitely a go. Anybody have thoughts about the additional products available--necessary and useful?
  15. Can you share what Jacobs Geometry resources you bought for your son? I bought the book and teacher manual. Has anyone used the CD or DVD? Are they useful? Did you see the email about the Digital Scribe that doesn't work with Macs. I wish they'd find one that is PC and Mac compatible. Let me change the official course description: VP Online Jacobs Geometry for Boys Who Swim
  16. All right, so we have 3 boys here enrolled in VP Geometry. Funny. So do they all swim, too?
  17. VP just emailed me that it looks as though Geometry will NOT be cancelled, so yee-hah.
  18. There is an online Geometry class at http://www.veritaspress.com (purveyors of Omnibus) that uses Jacobs. It meets on Tuesdays and Thursday from 11:00 to 12:30 EST. There are only 4 kids signed up, so it could be (1) a great opportunity for Geometry in a small class or (2) cancelled if enrollment is deemed too low. Check it out. One of my sons took Omnibus I last year and had a great experience all around--challenging reading, meaningful writing, and a patient, supportive teacher.
  19. Well, thanks, but the question wasn't "can this be done?" but "which product?" (The text about my hesitations in the past was an aside.) I intend to do the best I can in the once-a-week time period and asked about the merits of the two programs.
  20. What made you choose HM over BTB? I found the HM site and the choices for French materials certainly are overwhelming. CDs DVDs activities and much more. What do you use and what do ask your students to buy and use? Are lessons well-laid-out or do you have to do a lot of planning? I always have shied away from teaching French at the co-op bcs I have been unsure whether it can be done effectively when we meet only 1x/week. But as much as I want to give a good course, I want preparing not to be burdensome on me since I also have my own kids to teach and keep in line.
  21. (Not enough traffic/response on high school board.) The class will meet once a week for about 45 mins. I would love to be able to cover high school French 1 and 2 in three years. I know BJUP has a new French 1 book, but I couldn't look at it at the curriculum fair. I have been looking at BTB online. (I know Potter's uses BJUP.) Does BTB stand alone well? Has anyone taught HS French once a week and had the kids do a lot of self study during the week? Is French 1&2 doable in 3 years when we meet only once a week? I have been putting off choosing between the two programs for too long and now I'm desperate for help to decide. TIA
