  1. Thank you... What is dual enrollment? I don't think any online or home-schooled classes necessarily need to be IB. She's already (in the last 5 weeks) dropped 2 of her IB classes, so she's no longer "Full Dimploma" IB anyway. I would think she's want to keep the classes honors or AP level, though, since her "rigor of secomdary education" is so far strong and would hopefully counteract her decreased GPA in the eyes of the colleges. I do think that the time management and study skills issue would be problematic with homeschool/online... however she's haveing such a problem with the intesity of the physical high school, and having shorter days there would help with that. She says she feels like overything's too loud, too bright, too MUCH at school and it makes her zone out and shut down. So she's physically sitting in the classroom but unable to concentrate. And sometimes it gets so bad she starts to shake and cry and needs to come home :( But, yeah, I am apprehensive about homeschool/online because I know it'd fall on me to be nagging her to work on it all the time, and I do not like that dynamic.
  2. Hi everyone. First let me say that we have homeschooled in the past (grades 3-4 while sailing) and had once thought we'd be sailing around the world, homeschooling, for our daughter's high school years. Alas the economy, etc, shattered that dream and, instead, we moved -specifically- to a school district with a "good" school system that had the gifted & talented programs she needed, and International Baccalaureate in high school. Long story short: sophomore year she began to fall apart. In retrospect we suspect that because she was always so smart, she "coasted" and got A's without really trying, and that once academics ramped up in high school with honors classes, she was woefully unprepared, with no study skills, no time-management skills, didn't know how to ask for help, etc. This year -her junior year- she enrolled in the full-IB dimploma program, which is VERY academically rigorous, and the academic stress quickly became too much. She had a major breakdown and is now diagnosed with major depression, anxiety, and a bunch of other stuff. She has missed a ton of school, and getting through a day of school continues to be very difficult for her. The school has put her on a 504 plan to help with makeup work, math tutor, etc. They are initiating Special Ed IEP testing which may also help by providing a study skills tutor, etc.... but for the short term she's just unable to get through a full week of classes and homework, and is falling apart. She's super stressed about it because she has her sights set on attending a selective college (Mount Holyoke is her dream) and she's terrified about how her GPA has slipped sooooooooo badly and she's had to drop 2 of her IB classes. College-wise, time is running out.... yet everyone has told us that serious depressions like this takes a long time to pull out of. We've realized that the most important thing for her right now is to recover and learn to manage these stressors, and I believe thats going to mean not attending full school days, at least for a while. In trying to think outside the box and find possible solutions that wouldn't delay her graduation or hinder her already shaky chances of getting into the schools she likes even more, I'm exploring pulling her out of school at least part of the day. She does LOVE her IB Art class, and tolerates the Theory of Knowledge and even IB Honors biology (plus that's a lab class, so more difficult to homeschool I imagine!) So I'm wondering about having her attend those classes -all morning classes- and then finding alternative ways for her to complete the credits for her other courses: IB/pre-AP Spanish IV Advanced Math some type of honors/AP/IB-level history or social studies class some high-level English class (she is currently enrolled in IB English.) Does anyone have experience with such a mixture of public/home school? Any advice? What do you think are good ways to earn those credits? She might be interested in trying a local community college course; or online courses? What do you all think works best for a very smart, very creative kid with study skills/motivational issues? If it helps, her recent PSAT scores were 77 critical reading (99%) 59 math (80%) 70 writing (98%) She's a gifted creative writer, reads voraciously, highly artistic.... but hates math and dry academics. I really appreciate any ideas. We're so at a loss right now and it's so heartbreaking watching such a smart and talented kid nosedive like this!!!! Stacey

  4. Well, I sure feel silly now! There. 50 posts? I'll go over to the For Sale board and try again. Thanks you all. See. Now I'm even more sad not to be doing this homeschool thing.... you guys are great :)
  5. I was a regular here two years ago, while I was preparing to homeschool my daughter for a 4-year sailing trip. With great, huge sadness we've had to indefinitely postpone our plans. I did SO much research and got SO much gret advice from you lovely folks about books and material... I now find myself with thousands of dollars worth of high school books and we've had to cancel our travel (and consequently home-school) plans :( I came back here to post my books on the For Sale page, but it tells me I need 50 posts before I can do so. I guess all my older posts no longer count. I feel like a lot of you would like the materials we bought, and I'm only listing them for what I paid... so it's not like I'm a commericial venture (which I assume the 50-post rule is about.) Does anyone know whether there's any way to have that waived? I'd hate to just post empty, dumb replies to threads just to make the 50-post quota :( Thanks for all your input earlier. I'm really sad that we're not going to be doing this :(
  6. Hi everyone- Thanks so much for watching Liv's video and voting!!! She just found out a few minutes ago that she won, and has run up to the library to tell the librarians. Thank you all for your support! The results, and all of the videos, should be able to be seen at http://www.storytubes.info Thanks again, what a great community! Stacey

  8. Every once in a while one has some poo on it. (From one hen, mostly, she always has a dirty butt!) In that case I usually just scrape it off with a paper towel, and then wash right before using. (As the op said, if you wash them all right away, they won't last as long because the coating washes off and the shells become much more porous). if an egg is REALLY dirty, I'll wash it in tepid water and then put it someplace where I will remember to use it within a day or so. Glad to hear you are supporting local farmers and eating fresh eggs!!! Those blue ones probably come from Easter Eggers, which are a production-cross breed based on the rarer purebred Ameraucanas, themselves decended from the Chilean rumpless Auraucanas. Easter Eggers and Ameraucanas are really pretty birds with "muffs and beards"... poofy cheeks and throats. We have several for the blue eggs ! I love a colorful egg basket: we also have a Welsummer for dark terra-cotta brown eggs.
  9. Thanks for starting this thread! This is really the one issue I feel we have with DD Olivia. She is such an awesome kid in every other way, but we are really struggling with the whole chore/responsibility thing. I know it is our own fault because we didn't start asking her to help out around the house (beyond picking up her toys) until she was 7 or 8. So now she has to learn that kind of work ethic from scratch... Of course, other adults say she's great and responsible, but at home I feel like I am always nagging her about something. Last year, after she would constantly "forget" to do her very few daily responsibilities (pick up her room, empty the dishwasher, take a shower, check the chickens for food/water and clean their poop board, clean the cat box, empty the recycling bottles) we tried to help her remember by making a list with check-mark boxes that is kept on the fridge. Even with that list, she often "forgets". Or does a SERIOUSLY sub-standard job, like throwing all the junk from her floor into her closet and shutting the door! We tried tying the list to her allowance (though I personally think that household responisbilities should bot be considered paid work, but part of being a faimly... but we were desperate) but since her allowance is already pretty meager (<$2) and she really doesn't have any daily petty-cash needs, it didn't really mean much that it got withheld when she didn't do her list well. In fact I don't think she's gotten an allowance in months, because she always has days when things dont get done. We ask VERY little of her. Maybe that's the problem...??? On the other hand, as it is some days she only has an hour of free time after school and extracurricular activities, and I hate to have her lose that to more chores. It's the reluctance to help, the complaining and moaning and tears about being asked to, and the shoddy work that make me really sad. This kid is just so WONDERFUL in nearly every other way, but she's going to have a hard time if she doesn't learn a better work ethic for menial chores, I think... Thanks for letting me ramble.... I'll keep watching this thread, thanks! Stacey in Maine
  10. As Olivia says, "You guys ROCK!" We REALLY appreicate all your support!!! She's been sent to bed, bouncing off the walls, and I guess I should go to sleep as well. Just wanted to say thank you again. This is such a great group of interesting and intelligent folks.... I'm so glad I found it! Stacey
  11. You guys are so great to be supporting her!!! 3 hours left and its still close. Dayle, we travelled by sailboat in the WEstern Caribbean. Olivia's FAVORITE place we went was Tikal! We sailed up the Rio Dulce. It was so cool. Thanks again everyone!!!
  12. Hey everyone-- You've all been great supporting Olivia's book review VIDEO this week. It's been quite a circus!! By now you probably all know that we wish it were judged by the sponsoring librarians on the merit of the kids' work, but it's not and this on-line voing has been crazy. Last night there was a really highly unnatural spurt for "the other kid" where he suddenly started getting votes at a rate 15x anything we'd seen so far: over 1,250 votes in under an hour and a half (at one point, 75 in 3 minutes!) and then suddenly at 5:45, the "faucet" shut off and he got 10 votes over the next 4 HOURS. Pretty strange (though it had happened the previous night, too) and VERY SAD. BUT....... Olivia has come this far -with all your help- and we can't quite now!!!! She is TIED for first right now, but his school district opens at 8:30 and his votes come in fast after that. SHE NEEDS ALL THE HELP SHE CAN GET TODAY AND TONIGHT!!! Voting ends at 11:59 pm Eastern time. Please continue your daily voting and continue to circulate the link to as many folks as you think would enjoy helping out his avid reader and chicken-lover!! THIS IS THE LAST DAY TO VOTE!!! Vote for (YOUR CHICKENS By Gail Damerow) http://www.storytubes.info/vote/final_videos.php Thank you! Stacey
  13. You guys are awesome. This morning she was dancing for joy at the overnight results. It's all due to the efforts of kind and supportive people like you. Although I disagree with the way the contest is being judged, I am happy to see books and reading promoted like this!! REmember to vote every day!! http://www.storytubes.info/vote/final_videos.php (Kathy in MD, you should be able to click on the video "Your CHickens" -it's the last one- and then a small video window opens and you click the arrow in the middle to watch it. Then vote in the panel on the left side of the window!!!! The videos are hosted on YouTube, so if you're someplace where YouTube videos are blocked, like a school, you may not be able to see them...) GO BOOKS AND READING!!!
  14. Hi everyone! Thanks to everyone who tried to vote for DD's book review video. The voting was hacked, I guess, and the sponsoring library had to shut the site down for a while. How sad is that??? Anyway, DD (Olivia) entered a national book review contest. The finalists were chosen by the sponsoring library, but the actual winner is chosen by PUBLIC VOTE. If she wins, she gets $1000 in books for her library and $500 in books for herself. Since the library just lost a massive amount of funding, she would really like to help them out. Olivia's video is "YOUR CHICKENS, A KIDS GUIDE" and you can watch it and vote for it on the link below. Please vote EVERY DAY from today till next Wednesday. There have been 3 other categotories and all of the winners have organized huge voting campaigns on internet bulletin boards and the like, so this is the only chance she has. http://www.storytubes.info/vote/final_videos.php (Personally, I think the videos should be judged on their merit rather than on how organized the kids' parents are, but apparently this is the way its done, so I am trying to help her out!!) If you would like to pass the link on to any other friends, forums, or anywhere else you think folks might like to vote, please do so. Thank you so much!! :) Stacey and Olivia

  16. We did for 2 years when we were living on our sailboat (grades 3 and 4). I can't say that being careful about energy usage on board affected homeschool any! We'll be going back out sailing for 3-4 years and will be homeschooling high school "off the grid" on the boat. I think that will be much more challenging since there are so many great resources for high school on line that we won't be able to access.
  17. We live in the burbs and are trying to live as sustainably as we can. It's not easy. Last winter my daughter and I decided we wanted to supplement our tiny kitchen garden with a small flock of laying hens (for eggs and manure to compost). We called our city and they said, "NO CHICKENS!" Not to be deterred, DD (10 at the time) called our local city councilor and asked to meet with hime about "a neighborhood pet issue". She presented him with her well-articulated argument, as well as a poster she made describing why she should be able to have chickens in the city (my hens -no roosters- will be quieter than dogs; reduce, reuse, recylce: hens turn kitchen scraps into eggs and compost; keeping chickens is educational; etc). The councilor thought it was a great idea and agreed to ask the rest of the City Council to make an ordinance change. Well, long story short: the rest of the council was dead set against it and it took us waging a MAJOR campaign ALL SUMMER LONG with petitions and press and a web site to drum up public support. We made presentations at about 7-8 city meetings and spent literally hundreds of hours on it. It was a huge undertaking, but finally, in Spetember (we started this in May) we were sucessful. Thank goodness. I was scared that if she lost, DD would be really jaded about politics and the system. But now, she is super empowered! Really feels she can make a difference. Very cool. Plus, we have our fabulous hens. Here's a web site we put together about it. www.SoPoChickens.org (If you go to "Chicken Laws" and scroll down in the text is a link to the archived site we used during the campaign. If anyone decides to do the same, feel free to use any of the stuff on the site for your own "campaign".) So we have our chickens, our 150 sq ft garden planted intensively and in succession to maximize harvest, we got a freezer on craigslist that we pack with our own veggies and farmers market veggies when in season. We split whole grass-fed organic cow and pig with friends and freeze that meat. We eat mostly whole (organic) foods so a lot of cooking time -no packaged convenience food- but really good healthy and cheaper stuff. Hang out laundry on the line. etc. Stacey
  18. Hey thanks everyone!! Yeah, Captain Underpants is in the lead. More votes are needed! Brindee, maybe you could forward the site and story to your who might want to check it out. And don't forget you can vote once a day! Thank you all for your help. She worked hard on it!! Stacey
  19. The librarian told her about this national contest where you make a video book review of your favorite book. She wrote, directed and acted the whole thing. The finalists were chosen by the sponsoring librarians but now it is an OPEN PUBLIC vote on the internet to choose the winner!! She is hoping to win so she can give the $1000 in books to her small local branch library. If you care to watch (and vote for her!) her video is called "Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson". http://www.storytubes.com/ You can vote once a day! I hope its OK to post this here. Stacey

  21. Has you daughter looked at samples of both? I had my DD do the online demos for both programs (as well as Saxon). I expected her to like LOF, since she is very literary and always writing stories and reading. However it did not appeal to her AT ALL!! On the other hand, she really liked the TT demo. She liked the explanations of theories in relation to real life use, and the way the books are laid out. She was actually excited about using them!!! Decision made.
  22. They won't let you buy the teacher's materials if you show them a valid Maine homeschool letter? That is what Glencoe/McGraw-Hill asks for. Sorry, that's all the advice I have!
  23. I asked this same Q recently. I think I'll be purchasing several of the books put out by Berkeley Press (berkeley school of music). They have study questions/quizzes and look great!
  24. Nan- I did not know you also sailed! Are you going sailing on the trip you just alluded to? Everyone- I am sorry my post about my ADD brother caused such strong reactions. I probably should not have said anything at all because I'm unwilling to share the entire story, which is that we're currently embroiled in a major family crisis around him, he is not doing well at all. I really don't want to get into it, but just want to say: yes, he takes out Teaching Company lectures from the library sometimes, but also he was kicked out of a good college and is heavily involved with extremely serious drugs. He is certainly not an educational success. And many of the things that have happened lately seem -to me- to be pretty directly tied to the way he was "catered to" in high school. Just my 2 cents. As I said, I probably should not have brought it up as I'm unwilling to go into ALL the details. Sorry about that.
