Every time I see these threads I wonder why I waited so long to have a kid! Anyway:
BA, Sociology--Finally graduated from Northeastern Illinois University after a mash up of other places--hey, I was a hippie--1975
MA, Social Service Administration, University of Chicago, 1977. Wish I'd been there the whole time, hope dd will be.
Sigh, I'm old enough to be my daughter's grandmother. But it's a "family tradition"--my mom had her one and only at 40, too.
Danielle
Me too. I graduated college in 1982.
Hi! From another oldie.

This morning, it was no trouble at all. She sat up, applied pressure and it was done in 5 min. or so. There was one day at Walmart that seemed to go on forever. We had people that worked there in the bathroom coming and going to check on us because they were worried. So I know that one was longer. I haven't seen her picking, but could be a factor, who knows?
I forgot to mention there are no headaches. I also don't think she drinks enough water. I have to remind her to drink, and she never asks for a drink on her own. That could be related.
My gf is a flight attendant and in her training they taught her that people get nose bleeds when they are dehydrated.
My ds get a lot of nose bleeds and his pediatrian said to swap a little neosporin in his nose with a q-tip during dry weather. We also used a humidifier in his room at night.

Aftter my kids dropped their nap they did their quiet time in their bedrooms. In the beginning I put a baby gate on the door or a piece of red construction paper under the door to remind them to stop and stay in their room.
My dd loved to listen to books on tape. My youngest loved to draw and color or play with his trains. Sometimes they fell asleep, too. I love the idea of a quiet time box.

Dear Blueridge, Mom in Missouri, Sarah B. and Orthodox 6,
I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your recommendation for Eureka Springs. It was the perfect spot to celebrate our anniversary - beautiful, relaxing and romantic. We had so much fun and our get away was long overdue
We stayed one night in the historic district at a B&B and spent the rest of the time nearby in a secluded cabin. We also got in a day trip to Branson, MO.
Thank again, Ladies!!!

Does Chik Fil A do this every year?
They did it last year so I assume it is an annual event.

My kids and I talked about this. We figured it would be more expensive to make a cow costume than to just purchase the meal. Maybe we're not creative?
If you have a printer you can go to cowappreciationday.com and click on starter kit and tape the cut outs on any clothes and you are good to go.
I also saw some teenagers with white tee-shirts and black construction paper spots. The funniest was a mom with four young children under the age of 6. She put white kitchen bags over them, (white head and arm cut outs) and drew some black spots on the bag with a sharpie. They had construction paper ears and tail. So cute!

THAT explains the kids I just saw down town :001_smile:
To bad I have already had lunch :glare:
It is good for dinner, too. Free meal all day.

Just show up at your local Chick-Fil-A dressed as a cow, and you'll receive a free meal. We just got back from lunch and it was so fun!
The have a cow costume kit online if you are pressed for time. My kids decided to make their own costumes and they turned out so cute.
You can check the details at http://www.cowappreciationday.com

I freeze leftover brown rice and use it for lunch for myself when I'm in a hurry. For lunch you can top the rice with beans or cooked veggies.
The lentils would be great in a soup. There are some good recipes on allrecipes.com. My kids love lentil tacos. Here is the recipe:

Mr. Clean Magic Erase works wonders on the clear glass in our shower. We also get mold near the caulk lines and bleach mixed with water gets rid of that.
For deep cleaning start by straightening up the room. I like to keep a laudry basket for all the items that don't belong in the room. Next I clean top to bottom circling around the room. I start near the celing hitting cobwebs with a feather duster, then dust horizontal surfaces, door jams and base boards. I also use the feather duster on the window treatments. I use spray or Mr. Clean Magic Erase to spot clean walls and light switch. When I finish going around the room I hit the ceiling fan, then polish/vacuum furniture. Finish by
shaking out the rugs, empting trash and vacuuming the floor and underneath furniture.
To clean windows I use a bucket of water with amonia and a squeegie. Just sponge the amonia water, (ratio is on the amonia bottle) and squeegie horizontally top to bottom. Use a rag to wipe the squeegie between swipes. I use windex and a special lint free towel for bathroom mirrors.
I love to light a candle while I am cleaning to make the house smell great.

I watched NCIS (season 6 I think) and Jericho while working out. I was so addicted to both of those shows that I was riding our recumbant bike for 1-2 hours everyday! I also watched the first season of Heros, but thought it was a little gruesome.
Can't wait to see the other replies becase I need to get back on our bike.

Oh, and a large portion of our produce each week comes from our CSA membership and our garden, so our grocery total will be lower than someone who has no garden or CSA involvement.
Good point! We spend $50 a week just in produce.

Not sure about those but my neighbor swears by Bounce fabric softner sheets. She rubs them on her body as insect repellant. She is from Louisiana and says that only the Bounce brand works. I swear I am not making this up.

I agree with the other posters that some type of routine is the key to a enjoyable summer. Sadly, if I let me kids do whatever they want they are whinning and fighting with each other before lunch. Our summer routine is much more relaxed, (they get to sleep in and get 2 hours of computer/electronic game time each day), but it is still a routine.
Since I am an introvert and need quiet time to recharge, our routine includes a mandatory 90 reading time every afternoon. My kids find a good book and a cozy spot and are allowed to read, think, pray or sleep. No playing and no talking. It is my favorite time of the day.
Good luck and enjoy your time off.

Thank you, ladies!!!!
I just wanted to post an update and let you know I did the vinegar soak and his PJ's smell great. This may have been an overkill, but since I had vinegar on hand I used a gallon vinegar and a gallon water. Soaked the clothes overnight. Washed normal.
I really appreciate the advice because we are going on a family vacation and am so relieved to pack nice smelling PJ's and sports shorts.
Thank you. Thank you.

Last time I stressed over lunch prep I made a lunch list and posted it on our fridge. It really helped the kids know what to expect and was great when it was time to make up the grocery shopping list. It went something like this:
M-sandwich
T-burritos or quesidilla
W-chicken nuggets or fish sticks
TH-wraps
F-pasta (usually mac 'n cheese, frozen ravioli or spaghetti)
S-leftovers
Each lunch served with veggies or fruit on the side.
My kids favorite wrap is Cesar salad dressing, grilled chicken, lettuce and parmesan cheese wrapped in a tortilla.

I have a Cuisinart 11 Cup. It came with 2 discs - slicing and grating and the chopping blade. I use all three accessories. I like the size though it is a little large for small items like one clove of garlic or a Tblsp of cilantro.
Our Cuisinart is probably 10 years old. I use it all the time and it looks brand new. The plastic cover has survived being dropped on our tile floor many tiles.
Our food processor is one of my favorite kitchen tools.

We had a lot of crock pot meals since my energy level was higher in the morning.
We packed up the kitchen in two phases. First I went through every cupboard and packed up everything I didn't need for the next three weeks. Then we packed up the essentials the day before the move. I also had a give away pile and am thankful I didn't have to pack and unpack those items.
Good luck!

Thanks!
I have some vinegar on hand so I think I'll try that first.
I really appreciate the suggestions about eliminating dairy. I think I'll try switching to almond or soy milk for awhile. We all love ice cream though so that maybe a little harder.
Thanks!

We keep our science supplies in a cabinet in the kitchen. I store math manipulatives individually in ziploc bags and then put the bags in the large plastic container on our bookcase. I spread our read alouds and fun reading books all over the house. Some are in the kids' bedrooms, some in the family room and the rest on a bookself in our den.
Can you move your board games to the family room to make more room in the den?
I use magazine holders for my kids workbooks. They keep them upright on their desk:
I hope you get more suggestions.

If his pj's are synthetic, the fibers themselves may be retaining bacteria/odor. This is a common issue with athletic clothing. I recently tried WIN laundry detergent on my athletic clothes, and it worked wonders to get rid of odors remaining in otherwise clean clothes.
You can buy it online, and if you google it, you might also find it at a nearby sporting goods store. I bought mine at Dick's Sporting Goods.
Beth
Yes!! It is the synthetic fibers because I have the same problem with his sports shorts. Interesting.
Thanks for the tips everyone!!!

We take our out of town guests to the Bureau of Engraving:
http://www.bep.treas.gov/locations/index.cfm/3
This one of the two location where they print US currency. They have a free tour and some hands on exhibits. Fun, informative and air conditioned.

My ds still wets his bed several nights a week. He will not wear pullups. For some reason his PJ's retain the urine smell even after washing. I have tried double washing, vinegar rinses and masking the smell with fabric softner, (yuck!). I think they need a good soak in something powerful. Any ideas??
Thanks - sorry if I grossed you out.

We used a kennel last year and really liked it. The down side was the expense, $30 per day.
This year we left our dog with a family who loves dogs. It worked out great and was more affordable - $10 per day. I found them through our hs group.
