  1. Yahoo to you! Finally deciding is great! Now I need to decide what to do for next year!:D Al
  2. I have been reading about classical education, (The Core, and TWTM) and I like a lot of the information, but my mom just heard about this curriculum called Oak Meadow and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it? I would like to look at all my options. I am not looking for curriculum for this school year, we will finish up with what we have, but maybe for next year. I sometimes feel like I need something new to break up the same old, same old.:001_smile: Al
  3. ..we participate in Classical Conversations and my children love and thrive in the Foundations program... Please tell me more about this.:) I was looking at the Foundations program for my girls. I'm not sure what I think yet, and I couldn't find much for samples. Al
  4. With my girls I found that my oldest could memorize things faster, and the younger one started comparing herself to her sister. This made her think she was not smart, and caused lots of problems. So I give them each their own memory work, and this is working much better. Al
  5. I've heard of Shiller math, but have never looked into it. I'd to see what anyone thinks of it. Al
  6. We also loved the poem Caterpillar! You could just get a copy of that poem, so your child doesn't miss that one. Then start on level 2. I think if you start on level 1 it will be almost all review. Level 2 also reviews things from level 1, so it will still get covered. Al
  7. I have two girls, who hate to write. My oldest daughter, has trouble remembering everything she wants to put in her sentence, and my youngest has trouble with forming her letters. I have been using WWE for both of them, and we have seen good improvement. I'm glad to hear that this is working for others! Al
  8. Thanks everyone! This makes me feel a little better. But I still have a hard time choosing.:D Al
  9. I'm not great about house cleaning and clutter, so I follow Flylady. I do the 27 fling boogie. At least it's a start!:D Al
  10. What do you follow from the WTM? What do you follow from something else? I'm trying to put all this together in my head. I've been reading The Core and enjoying it, but now I'm not sure which sugestions I like better.:001_huh: Help? Al
  11. Do you use more than one program for a subject? For example we were using math-u-see and we also use math mammoth for review pages. Do you find, when you use more that your kids learn more, or do they get confused? I am wondering because I was thinking of using more than one thing for reading. I just wonder what others experience with this is, because I don't want to confuse my kids. What are you using more than one of? How does it help your kids? There are so many good curriculums, it makes it so hard to choose just one! Thanks, Al
  12. With my girls I found that having a different program from your main math program works well. Both of my girls have done better having the second program to help them see more than one way to ask and do math. We are using MM. Both my girls like it. They really like the puzzle corner, and they like to play the math games. Al
  13. Congratations!!! Keep up the good work! Homeschooling can be a blessing.
  14. Maybe you could search for the book on Amazon?
  15. We used Great Science Adventures.
  16. We used this program for 2nd and 4th grade math. I thought the program was good, but I didn't like how they taught children to use their fingers to count out the answer. My girls thought this was great, and we switched when my daughter told me she like this math because she didn't need to learn her math facts because she could just count on her fingers.
  17. I posted this on the general board but I meant to post it in here. I'm pretty new here, and I've been reading the book The Core: Teaching Your Child the Foundations of Classical Education. Has anyone else read this? I was wondering because in the geography section the author recommends children drawing their own maps. Does anyone do this? Do your children like this? Do you use pre-made outline maps as well, where the child labels the map? If you do use this method where did you get your map you use for copying? Just wondering, (thinking about trying this) Al

  19. Hi, I need some suggestions as what to try for my two girls. Both my girls need me to help them with most of their school, so I find that we run out of time in the day to get all of our subjects in. Right now we have been using All About Spelling, and I really like the program. The problem is I need something that my girls can work on by themselves while I work with the other one. Math is the only subject that we go over, and then they can go to their desks and do the pages by themselves. They are both doing phonics which I do with them, and they are both using First Language Lessons , and Writing with Ease, so I have to be with them all day. This is why I am looking for a spelling program that they can take the pages and work at their desk, while I work with the other one. In the Well Trained Mind they suggest Spelling Workout. Does anyone have any experience with this program? I don't want my kids to not learn to spell. I love how All About Spelling program gives the reasons for using certain letters. Does Spelling Workout tell why to use certain letters, or do they just give a rule. I find that a lot of spelling rules have exceptions to the rules, and are not explained well. I'm sorry this is getting so long. If anyone has any ideas for me I would be grateful. Thanks, Alissa
