  1. To make it even more confusing, both words *can* also be used as the other part of speech. I didn't even know until college that the word affect is sometimes pronounced "aff' ect", meaning one's facial expression. Sometimes people also try to ee fect' a change, meaning "bring about" a change. The pronunciation changes slightly for these uses.

The usual spellings and meanings were correctly given by the previous posters.

  2. (((hugs))) Rose! We all do this kind of thing and kick ourselves afterwards. My dh was thinking, Oh, yeah, Joshua could love this movie, but I said he has to wait till he's a bit older because of the ants eating people and the people burning alive. I just don't like that kind of thing. I *am* however going to get the Young Indiana Jones shows if I can.

I'm sure dh will have the DVD in the house when it's released and then I'll have to fast forward the objectionable scenes. Luckily, my hero lover is my more cautious child. The child-with-no-fear is the animal lover. It works better that way.

  3. I'm using WinterPromise and plan to combine my boys who are 3.5 years apart in age. They offer Older Learner Guides for some of their programs, or have two versions of some programs, so it makes it a no-brainer to combine big gaps. It's what I love most about the company.

  4. We consider all of our money to be God's and have fun sharing it whenever we feel convicted to do so.

Well, this is also true, in another way of thinking. I remember the pastor at my grandma's church saying every Sunday, "Now we come to you for God's tithe and your offering."

So I personally always try to give an offering to missionaries in addition to our customary tithe to our local church.

I *do* also live generously, as we've been blessed.

  5. Tithing is a pretty widespread practice. That is the way pastors and churches are financed. Ten families x one-tenth of each family's income = a pastor who makes an average of the amount earned by the ten parishioners. (Naturally most churches have way more than 10 families, but there are also church buildings to build and finance utilities.)

The scriptures teach that the first tenth of our income belongs to God. So we don't consider it "ours" at all. We also don't believe that if we send our tenth to Pat Robertson we'll get a windfall.

  6. Winners:

    WinterPromise LA1

    God Made Music 1

    WinterPromise Animals and Their Worlds

    Pentime Handwriting

    About Three Workbooks

    Losers:

Modern Curriculum Press Math (we're switching to BJU)

I Can Do All Things Art (this might have been good if we had the DVDs).

Promising to be a winner after two weeks:

WinterPromise I'm Ready to Learn Preschool

    R&S ABC preschool workbooks

    Jury is out:

Galloping the Globe... I think ds will love it, but I'm not sure I'm up to the constant library trips and figuring out our schedule. Good thing I'm only using it as a supplement!

Have in my closet and can't wait to start:

    WinterPromise American Story 1

World Around Me science from WP

    Bob Jones University Math 2

  7. Actually, cornopean is not a troll, at least not in the "just here for the giggles" meaning. I have been on another forum with him for months. He's annoying, but not a troll.

And cornopean, if you're reading, I suggest you remove identifying info from your blog.

It's a pretty hard thing to remember sometimes. I should send folks to my blog to make sure my particulars aren't absentmindedly posted. I don't mind folks knowing my general area, but don't necessarily want them to know my phone number.

  8. We worked through the time travelers cd for Revolutionary War this year, with a sixth grader and fourth grader. It took me quite a bit of time to get everything printed out and organized, I cannot imagine getting four done in one year. I would imagine that it would now be easier for me to organize a second after working through the first one.

    Here's a happy note:

WinterPromise offers everything printed out and organized as a separate pack if you want this done for you (transparency overlays, cool papers, etc).

  9. Now that I've had two go through this stage, I'd lean more toward suggestion one based on your OP because of age. At that age, both of my dd's did not want to do it so pushing was futile. Even though they could read the words, they hadn't had that moment where it all clicked. There's a hump to get over and with my kids, it was at ages 5-6. There's a lot of hype about getting our 5yo's reading and with many that works, but ime, my kids just weren't quite there yet. I have a friend who does "optional" kindergarten and her 5 kids are amazingly intelligent and well educated. It worked very well here in this house too.

    HTH

ITA with this. There's a developmental milestone at play here and there's no reason to rush it, just as we don't rush crawling, walking and potty training when we trust a child's instincts.

  10. We haven't used for many years, but have seen improvements in test scores since using it. This years ITBS scores:

    6th grade (used BJUP 5th-6th): 99 percentile

4th grade (1st year with BJUP, prev. used RightStart): 88 percentile (came up from 80 percentile prior year)

1st grade (1st year with BJUP) 99 percentile

I am so excited to hear this about BJUP math. I have switched to that publisher for math, hopefully for the long haul.
