  1. Thanks so much for the responses. It is helpful to get everyone's perspective on this. Thanks again! Jak **Any thoughts on what major/career to look at if you love science, anatomy, are detail-oriented, organized and are introverted? :) (besides nursing...my dd is not really interested in nursing or doctorate level careers!)
  2. My dd has been interested in healthcare in some way as a career for a while now. She had almost decided to go the imaging (radiography) route. But now she's thinking about psychology. I'm not sure what you can do with a bachelor's degree in psychology. She's not sure she wants to go on to get her masters or higher. Any thoughts? She is taking psychology this year and loves it! She also loves science and anatomy. She's pretty introverted, though, so I'm just not sure.... Thanks! Jak
  3. My dd has had eczema since she was a baby...she's now 18. It was bad when she was little...her feet sometimes looked like they had been burned! It was awful! She would get staff infections on her skin from scratching it raw. We used to grease her up and put socks on her hands so she couldn't scratch at night. I don't think she slept very well then. The dermotologist suggested lukewarm baths a couple times a day, pat dry and eucerin lotion within 3 minutes of getting out. We used protopic (don't know if they make that any more) and triamcinolone, which kept it under control. Oh, and oatmeal baths to sooth the itch. Here's what else we did: free & clear laundry detergent, very mild soap (cetaphil), no perfume at all. She tested positive to milk and citrus sensitivity. I always noticed if she had milk or orange juice...her neck would get rough, red and scaly and itch like crazy. I would definitely look in to food allergies or sensitivities. There's so many things that can cause an eczema flare-up that's it so frustrating and makes us moms feel helpless! My dd's allergist said think of allergens as going into a bucket...when there's enough of them it overflows and that's when you have reactions. So he suggested work on controlling and limiting allergens as best you can so the "bucket" doesn't overflow. There's no way to eliminate all the allergens, or even know what triggers flare-ups so it's very frustrating. Now, at 18, my dd's skin is fairly clear. She has flare-ups and puts triamcinolone on them. And she lotions well after her shower. She uses Cetaphil cream now. She can eat some dairy and some citrus, just not too much. She recently had the same rough, red and itchy patch on her neck after drinking apple cider several times. I don't know if this will help, but know you're not alone. It's so hard to see our children suffering and not being able or know how to help. jak
  4. I trying to figure out how to attach a pic...here's my avatar bigger. Hope this works!
  5. My avatar is my husband and I before the Super Bowl last year.
  6. I just opened a store a while ago....I only have one item in there so far! My name is justjulieann. I plan to add more items soon. Check it out! :) Julie
  7. My dd used home2teach last year. We both liked the classes. They are each 6 weeks long, so not too long at a time. So you could try one and all you're committed to is 6 weeks....and if you like the format and such, you sign up for another one. The instructor gives recommendations at the end of the class for what she thinks the student should take next, based on how well they did. I feel like these really helped my dd. We did 4 classes for the year. Check it out! Good luck! HTH! jak
  8. I agree with Cetaphil. I use the Daily Facial Cleanser, Gentle Cleanser for removing makeup and the lotion. My dd, who has dry, dry skin and eczema, uses the cream. I don't like the facial moisturizer with sunscreen because it burned my eyes. We both love Cetaphil. jak
  9. My dd (senior next year) is searching for what she wants to do after high school. She wants to go into the health care field in some way but she cannot decide!! It's very frustrating for her (and me!). Here's what she's looking at: Medical sonography, Radiological technology, physical therapy assisting, nursing... If you have any of those jobs, could you give me a brief review, I guess, of your job....why you chose it, what you like about it, what you don't like about it, what kind of personality you have, where you went to school, etc. My dd is introverted, in case that helps. She loves science, especially anatomy. I would greatly appreciate ANY input. She has job-shadowed all those jobs, except nursing. Thanks, jak
  10. Does anyone know anything about Kettering Medical Arts College in Kettering, OH? My dd is possibly interested in radiologic technology or sonography. I know this school is a Seventh-Day Adventist school...I have never heard of it before. Any reviews/opinions? Thanks! jak
  11. I have not kept one yet...sorry I can't give you experience with it. I have been intending to start one, though. Your post just gave me the push I need! : ) I've been feeling down a lot lately and I've heard that keeping a journal of what you're thankful for will help...maybe just with perspective, but that would be good. I try to be thankful inside, but writing it down would probably be more powerful. And, also, going back and reading the earlier journal entries sounds like it would be a great thing. We'll see how it goes. I would like to hear about your experience when you've been keeping it for a while! Have a great day! jak
  12. Thanks so much for the replies! Both of these camps sound great. My dd is not outgoing...very introverted actually...and doesn't really want to go to either of these because it's out of her comfort zone. I feel it would be a good experience and learning time for her. I do agree on the solid biblical foundation first. Anyway, thanks again for the replies. I really appreciate you taking the time! jak
  13. Please tell me what you know about Worldview Academy Camps. I'm interested in sending my dd (17) either to this one or to Summit. Was it worth the money? It seems a little expensive to me. How beneficial was it to your dc? Any experience and opinion would be appreciated. Thanks, jak
  14. What information should be included on the transcript (besides classes, grades, credits...)? Is it better to list the classes out by year or by class? I thought I would just give a grade to academic classes, not things like PE, art, music, etc. Is that a good idea? I would still give credit, though. Is it necessary to have a name for your home school or can you just say "official transcript of (your student)"? Thanks for answering these questions. My dd is applying to the cc for classes next fall and they need to see a transcript to show she is a junior. Julie
  15. I've always heard it is a bad oil, but lately have been reading that is good for you...as in eating 2-3 tbsp per day. Is it really good for you? Thanks, julie
  16. Anyone have any experience with this? I know it was new this fall. I am interested in next school year...physics. Also, if I didn't go with Apologia Academy, but just used Apologia's textbook for physics here at home....how doable is that? I wouldn't be any help at all, so my dd would have to learn it on her own. Thanks! jak
  17. I also have many very good friends. But I want a close friend that I can be myself with. I thought I had that with this one person, but she has moved on to someone else. I'm still friends with her and the other person, but it's not the same and we're definitely not as close as we were once. It's very hard! I want to be special to someone, not just one of many...does that make sense? I think you can get different things from different friends, though. When one of my friends want to party and have a hilarious time, they wouldn't chose me because I'm very reserved. And I wouldn't chose that friend to go to quilt shops or bargain shopping, you know what I mean? Well, I just want to let you know you're not alone...I understand that yearning very well! jak
  18. My ds 19 tested positive (blood test) for mono. He's had a terrible sore throat, swollen tonsils with white patches and swollen lymph nodes for a week. His throat is starting to get better. But I'm concerned for him as he heads back to college Jan. 3. Can anyone suggest things he can do or nutritional supplements that he can take that will help him get better? Also, how long he is contagious? Thanks, jak
  19. Tokyomarie, Thanks for responding! Can you tell me what you liked about PT? What you didn't like? If you were to start over, would you still be a PT? I will have to have my dd job shadow so she can see what the job is like. Thanks again! jak
  20. Thanks for all the responses to my question about medical technology! Has anyone here worked as a physical therapy assistant? I know it would be direct contact with patients, which my dd is not sure she wants, but I'm trying to encourage her to keep her mind open to that and explore all areas. I appreciate any information/experience you would have about a career as a physical therapy assistant. jak
  21. MIch elle & Twigs, You both said that you liked the course work, but did not like the job at all. Can I ask why you hated the job? Did it not fit your personality...was it working in a hospital...was it too boring? I'm really curious. My dd is definitely having some second thoughts about this career. rwalizer, You said that you did a 2 year program...would you recommend that? Can a person go on and get a bachelors degree if they decide they like the job? I'm wondering if that might be a better idea...to start out with a 2 year program and work in the field for a while and then complete the degree...if she likes it. Thanks, everyone, for your responses! jak
