  1. I use Cetaphil gentle cleanser to remove my make-up, including my non-waterproof mascara. It seems to work well for me! Periodically, I mix baking soda with this to exfoliate my face.
  2. Thanks for responding...I will look at all the suggestions.
  3. Thanks, Chris in VA. A marriage series might work. I should have mentioned that we all have grown children and are past the little kid stage. The women of the group meet regularly...we are all in varying degrees of the empty-nest stage. A few of us have had our adult kids move back home for a time. All of the women and our husbands want something to get us all together as couples, and get the men together specifically. In our case, it is much harder for our husbands to have close friendships and fellowship with other men.
  4. A group of my friends...6 couples...want to meet regularly for a bible study/small group...probably every 2 weeks for 2-3 hrs. We really have no idea what kind of study to do. It should appeal to men and women, not too intense or time consuming....maybe a DVD study series. Anyone have any suggestions? This group hasn't done this kind of thing before, so I'm not sure what format or style would work best. I think a bible study that is about practical everyday Christian living would appeal to me...not sure about the others. The only idea someone gave was Simplify by Bill Hybels....reviews on that one would be great, too. Thanks! jak
  5. Thank you, thank you for taking time to respond! I haven't read all the replies yet, but will take time to explore all of them and look up all the book suggestions. Prayer is about all I've been doing lately. Someone suggested make sure to treat him as the adult that he is, and always pray...quietly. Good reminder.
  6. My ds (24) is having serious doubt about the existence of God, believing the Bible, etc. He wants evidence and has a hard time believing something based on faith. Also, he says he will not believe based on a threat (hell). Anyway, I do not know how to help him. I am NOT science-minded or an intellectual, which he is. I would really like some resource to give him that can help him in his search. Maybe a seminar/talk to listen to or a short book to read. I am so upset that he seems to be rejecting his faith completely. Thanks for any help. jak
  7. Okay, I had read this when searching......and I asked a paint guy at Menards. He said I could apply Zinsser Gardz Problem Surface Sealer over the glue and it seals it so then I can paint over it. I'm going to try it. I really, really hopes this works! If it doesn't.....hmmm...I might have to talk my dh into adding beadboard to my kitchen walls! I actually wanted that to begin with, but he wasn't comfortable with doing it. Thanks for the replies. btw....I am NEVER applying wallpaper again! What was I thinking?! It was actually was very pretty, so I guess that's what :)
  8. Thanks for the replies. I have removed the wallpaper and the paper backing with vinegar and water. Both came off easily. However, there is a lot of residue left on the walls, even after I scraped they like crazy! The wallpaper was applied over a painted wall, if that makes any difference. Anyway, I'm not sure how I can get all that off....it would be a huge job! I just wanted to see if anyone has had experience with this and what they did to solve the problem. Thanks again!
  9. I am removing wallpaper from my kitchen and a lot of the glue/adhesive residue will not come off. Any thoughts on either how to remove it, or what to do to seal it so I can paint the walls? Thanks!
  10. Wanting to get opinions about this flooring. We have hardwood everywhere, but don't want it in the kitchen. I can't decide what I want. Of course cost is important and this is fairly inexpensive. Any opinions or thoughts appreciated!
  11. I use a french press every morning. You do have to clean out the grounds daily, but I have a fresh mug full of coffee at the strength I like. I love it! I actually collect french presses (and handthrown pottery mugs). For me, using one is part of the "experience or art" of enjoying that simple pleasure of a great mug of coffee! The other thing I use occasionally is a pour-through cone made by Melita. It is under $5. You have to use a paper filter every cup. All you do is add amount of coffee you like and set cone on mug, then pour boiling water over it. It makes a great cup of coffee! That's what my dd21 uses when she comes home from college. And there's no mess at all...just throw away the used filter w/grounds!
  12. My kids had 2 rats when they were young. Rats are sociable creatures...they like being with you...and to climb on your shoulders, and getting 2 together is a good idea because they'll keep each other company when your son isn't around. We actually did use a glass fish tank for the base and then my husband built a cage from wire fencing that sat on top. He added a door on the side so we could get the rats out without taking the whole cage top off. We also added some things for the rats to climb onto and into...pvc plumbing pipe, toilet paper rolls, etc., and a place for them to sleep, like a hammock. The glass tank made it pretty easy to clean. We rented a lot of books from the library about rats to learn about them and researched on the internet. Good luck with your new pets! They are fun! :)
  13. I am in a group of women who are all in the "empty nest" stage now. We meet 2 times per month. We are considering what to read or study this year. I would love some suggestions! We don't want anything that involves very much homework as some of the women are in other bible studies. We are all open to reading a book and discussing, not necessarily a bible study, but open to that as well. Last year we read Guide to the Empty Nest by Barbara Rainey & Susan Yates. Thanks!
  14. I just use a coffee grinder to grind flaxseeds, and then store the ground meal in the freezer. I have never toasted it first. You can also use your blender.
  15. I actually prefer for my kids' friends to call me by my first name. That seems more natural and personal, like we have a relationship. However, I have a few friends that prefer Mrs. So-n-So. I've always felt that that sounds too formal and not personal, like you were addressing a stranger. One friend commented that she is not her kids' friends peers, so she doesn't want to be addressed that way. Plus, she views it as a sign of respect. Now I feel kinda bad because I know my kids call this friend by her first name because I've never taught them differently. If they changed now, it would just sound weird. Curious what other people prefer. Btw: my kids are older...19 and 21...maybe that makes a difference?
  16. I appreciate you taking the time to respond! The HP TouchSmart does look pretty cool! I'll look into it. julie
  17. My dd is looking for a laptop to bring to college this fall. I would love recommendations! I've been looking at this one: Toshiba Portege R835-P56X (http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/retail-product.jsp?poid=501921). Is Toshiba a good brand? Anyone have this one? If so, is it a good one that will last through college? I love that it's lightweight. It seems good, but I just don't know...I'm pretty clueless about what to get! Thanks! Julie
  18. Thank you, Leonana! I like that they're made in the USA. The one I'm looking at doesn't have a power head/brush. With all hardwood floors, I don't think I need it, though. Anyone else?
  19. I have all hardwood floors, except my bedroom, and we're getting ready to pull that up. We also have a cat that sheds a lot! The guy at the vacuum store recommended Riccar Moonlight canister. Has anyone used this and if so, what do you think of it? Is it made well and does it hold up? Thanks.
  20. Squish means...the picture is shorter from top to bottom than it should be and the faces look weird. When I copy a full page, the copy comes out about 3/4th of a page. I probably will have to buy a new one. "sigh"
  21. I'm trying to scan pictures so I can make a slide show. My scanner scans them, but squishes them, so the pictures are distorted. Anyone have a clue what I can do about this? I've messed around with settings, but nothing has helped. Do I just need to buy a new scanner/printer? It also squishes when I just make a copy. Frustrating! Btw: I have a HP Photosmart C4480. Thanks! Julie
  22. I wouldn't pay that either. We've had our cat for 12 years and we've always said that if she gets sick and needs something major or ongoing medication that we wouldn't/couldn't do it. It would be very, very hard, though, to not treat them! Could you try feeding your cat soft food? It would be more expensive, but not as much as the dental treatment. Just a thought. It's so hard because the animals are such a part of the family...my kids grew up with our cat! She's like a sibling! :) Btw: I've never heard of tooth absorption... Julie
  23. Whenever I'm around people who are crocheting, knitting, quilting or anything crafty, I definitely get the "bug" to make something! This happens a lot when I'm with my mil. She is always working on something and learning new things. I love it! I think that is great that your kids are crocheting...I love to see young people picking up the older crafts, ya know? My dd 18 loves to crochet, too, but doesn't usually have extra time to do it. Oh, and I understand wanting to "just look at the yarn"! :) It's fun to envision all the projects you can make! I really love the process of making something useful out of something not so useful (like a ball of yarn). julie
