  1. I was thrilled when I saw that our high school uses Dave Ramsay's personal finance book. It's a 1/2 credit course here in MO. Blessings, Julie
  2. Hi, I found out that in my state (MO), the personal finance course has to be taken either in the 10th or 11th grades. The public school in my town uses Dave Ramsay's Personal Finance course. I just thought I'd suggest checking your state's requirements. Blessings, Julie in MO
  3. I love it when people share the good things they come across on this board! Blessings, Julie
  4. I suspected that we should set aside specific time for college prep stuff. I appreciate your advice. Blessings, Julie
  5. I really like TOG and think the reading list and supplementary information is top-notch, but the idea of spending portions of the latter HS years preparing and taking AP/CLEP exams for credit sure seems appealing. Has anyone done a four year TOG cycle and still had time for AP/CLEP? Or did you find that TOG prepared your student well enough that he/she didn't need a lot of prepping? Blessings, Julie
  6. that refrigerated juice stays fresh for up to 3 days, however, it's best to store it in small glass jars (like jelly jars) filled all the way to the top so that there is less chance for air to oxidize the nutrients. I think your smoothie sounds great. I'm a big fan of kale - it's a fabulous source of calcium. How could one go wrong with a little coconut on board? :001_smile: Blessings, Julie
  7. I took the advice offered in a recent thread about getting connected on the board....so here's my new look! Daisy dog will do anything my DD wants her to do, including playing cards. Thanks ladies for the advice! I'm giddy with new technology insight! Blessings, Julie in MO
  8. After a full day of school, I can't remember what the old board even looked like! :tongue_smilie: I'm a pretty consistent lurker on this board, though, and have learned so much valuable information! The people on this board are the type that I want to connect with - always looking for ways to improve, learning new things, bantering about ideas....fun, fun, fun! I'll take the advice of learning how to make an avatar and adding more personal information to my profile. I was just happy to learn how to copy and paste last week! Did you see how much I copied and pasted today on the board? Blessings, Julie
  9. I just finished reading the thread about ignore lists and "internet bad breath" - thanks for getting that one started, Unsinkable. I've often wondered why I feel so invisable on the board. As a follow up to that discussion, can y'all give some suggestions on how to get connected on this board? I notice some have friends in their friend list and I'm not sure how one goes about getting connected in this kind of environment. I've tried sending encouraging PM's to people. I also try to sell things on the board for good prices and good service, but I suppose that is just reputation building, not socializing. Is there more to this kind of social skill?:001_smile: Blessings, Julie in MO
  10. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/04/different-kind-of-company-name.html Wow - my husband is going to be amazed at all the copy/pasting I'm doing on the board today - he just taught me how last week and I'm apparently having way too much fun with that little right clicker! Blessings, Julie
  11. Hi, Thanks publically Atozmom for PMing me about my question. Here is her response for the others who posted: Chapter 5 there is a section on STD's. It is about 8 pages long. Here are the subtitles to this section. Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Herpes Simplex II, Fighting STD's, What are the consequences, AIDS, History of Aids, What the virus does to the body, How do you get AIDS, Prevention. Of course under the prevention section it says the only safe sex is not sex. Chapter 11 has 2 1/2 pages that briefly talk about rape. Chapter 13 discusses sex, abstinence, and abortion. It is about a 10 page section. The next section after that is about tobacco, drugs and alcohol. 11 pages. It mostly talks about the harmful effects they have on your body. Chapter 14 discusses dating, marriage and parenting. Sex is again discussed in the marriage section. All of the topics above are discussed in a very tasteful way, always keeping God and His Word as the basis of all decisions. Considering there are 16 chapters in this book, a very small portion deals with the heavier issues. Again, even then they are done well. I really like this book. I think it is one of the best health texts available for Christians. Hope this helps some. HTH! Julie
  12. The Homeschooling Through High School DVD is four hours long covering these topics: strategies for success subjects and materials (she shares her favorite books that helped her plan and implement HS) planning lessons record keeping giving grades determining credit HS tests specialization independent homeschool planning for college success She also offers free office hours to answer specific questions, a blog which has useful free articles, and consultation services (for a fee). I don't read most of my e-mails, but I ALWAYS read what I get from her. She's so encouraging and empowering. HS feels like a whole new learning curve to me after all these years of homeschooling! Blessings, Julie If you have any other questions about the DVD, do feel free to PM me!
  13. requirements! I just checked mine (MO) and foreign language and math are the only two subjects allowed to count for HS credit in 8th grade - and only if the continuation course (such as foreign language II, algebra II) is taken during the 9-12 grade years. Blessings, Julie
  14. currently discussing this on the board: http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166004 Blessings, Julie
  15. Hi, My husband and I have been praying/researching/thinking about high school this year in preparation for our 8th grader who will begin high school soon. Our local high school promotes the Physics First program: http://www.jyi.org/volumes/volume6/issue7/features/pattanayak.html Apologia, which is the curriculum we've used for years follows the traditional biology, chemistry, physics path. I'm drawn to that sequence just from the comfort of having successfully learned that way in my own education. I purchased the chemistry lectures from The Teaching Company to supplement Apologia's chemistry. I also bought Understanding the Human Body from TC to use with biology, although we're considering using a local university model private school for the biology coursework because we've heard such good things about the teacher. Jane in NC gave such good advice (thanks, Jane!) We must know our goals for science. My dd is not a math/science type at this point, so following a traditional approach feels fine - things may change in those four years, though. Best wishes to you on your journey! Blessings, Julie
  16. First, off to the bathroom, then I read my chronological Bible (I love reading it that way!) Blessings, Julie
  17. a La Leche League friend of mine helped me when I struggled with this - she suggested drinking a glass of wine first, then doing all those other things to get the milk flowing. It was really just to calm my nerves, but it did help. Cabbage leaves was the first thing I tried, then the hot water/massage. It was probably a combination of things. Hope you feel better soon. Blessings, Julie
  18. That's a positive way to reframe it...I'll take it! Thanks, Julie
  19. OK...taking a break from school today to have a short pity party. Anyone who wants to join me, feel free...it would be nice to not feel alone in this!:001_huh: Some weeks we don't do algebra every day (illness, concerts, etc.). I have found that if we don't do it every.single.day....we forget everything we've learned (well..maybe not everything...but we spend a huge amount of time reviewing in order to complete a Saxon lesson). Is anyone else like this - or is this just because it's new material for dd and I have an OLD brain! Dd does well in lesson and great on tests, and she doesn't struggle with retention as much as I do, but we do it together and I end up holding her back to spend time reviewing or have her teach it to me again. She says she wants to be a teacher, so I count it as career enhancement. BUT...is this what brains do as we age? Yikes! Blessings, Julie
  20. For those of you who have used this series, I was hoping you could give me some insight. I've looked at the table of contents for the middle school and the high school books and they look very similar. I have upcoming 9th and 7th graders. We try to do as much together as we can and it looks to me like I could stretch my 7th grader and have her join us in the high school edition. If you have used this book, what do you think? Are there topics in the middle school book that I'd regret "missing?" Thanks for your thoughts! Blessings, Julie in MO

  22. can do wonders! I used to limp from the pain of my bunion and now I only have pain when I wear "dress up" shoes instead of the tennis/orthotic combo. Mine are custom made orthotics. It's also important to use tennis shoes built on an SL-2 "last" which gives you more room in the shoe. Hope you feel better soon. Blessings, Julie
  23. and I have to leave at 6:30 am to take a car load of kiddos to a Children's Literature Festival 2 hours away!!!!!! The speakers better be VERY engaging or I'll be in danger of napping....:001_huh: Julie in MO
