  1. This is a great idea! I have had so much fun reading these posts and I may actually try this in our homeschool. I only have one dd6 that I am teaching right now, so I would divide the hour up like this: 15 min math 15 min WWE (I would incorporate spelling and grammar into this) 5 minutes reading practice with McGuffey Readers 25 minutes memory work For the unschooling part I would use Daisy's list idea and then set up centers all through our house. Then I would make myself available to participate in her learning as much as possible. Throughout the day, I would write her activities in a journal to have a record of what she did for school that day. Also, I would do lots of field trips and nature walks. I would try to inspire her to pursue learning by modeling the educational life for her by making my own learning pursuits more visible to her, as well.
  2. We have also enjoyed Usborne at our house. DD6 really enjoys the internet links. A lot of them have been things like games, movies and slide shows and have been a lot of fun for us.
  3. I have this, but I haven't yet done more than skim through it. It is basically an extension to the original program and has an additional question list to extend the discussion into worldview analysis. The questions go from concrete to abstract just like with the TTC list, so some of the beginning questions could be used with a younger child. However, they are questions that would require additional research outside of the story itself, so they should at least be old enough to handle some research, or you should be prepared to do research yourself ahead of time to bring to the discussion. It might be overwhelming to learn to use the supplement simultaneously with the original program, so I would recommend giving yourself time to become comfortable with the original program before adding in the supplement. I think I read somewhere that starting the worldview supplement at least a year after starting the original program is a good rule of thumb. As I said earlier, I haven't yet used the supplement, but judging from my brief perusal of the materials, I think it could be just as valuable as the original program. It would take practice, though, to be really useful, just like with the original program. I hope this helps some.
  4. I am preparing to start Omnibus I soon with my dss 14 and I am searching out audiobook versions of as many of the book selections as possible. So far, I have been unable to find an audiobook version of David Ferry's Epic of Gilgamesh. I have, however, found a version by Stephen Mitchell that is available in audiobook form and I enjoyed the sample I heard. For those of you who have used or are using the Omnibus curriculum, how difficult is it to switch out versions of the recommended books and still be able to use Omnibus's guide for that book? If switching versions is inadvisable, would anyone happen to know where or if I could find an audiobook version of the David Ferry translation? Thanks for any help you can give on this matter.
  5. I am starting in August in a CC community with my dd6. I am leaning heavily toward using Veritas Press materials for the rest of her education. I am very interested in the Scholars lesson plans for her and dss14 (he is LD and I believe the Grammar materials would still be a good fit for him right now). I have tried planning on my own, but I have been driving myself crazy for months because I keep changing my mind on what I want to do so much that I am mostly spinning my wheels. Also, I work FT (3 - 12 hr shifts/wk nights) and all this planning is taking away time I could spend with my kids, which is already limited. I know Classical Christian Education is the philosophy I want to follow in our homeschool, and I am 99% sure I want to use Omnibus with dd6 when she is old enough, so I am thinking that Scholars would be the sanest and least complicated way to meet my goals. My conern is, I know that CC orders the VP timeline cards differently than VP's history program does, and I am wondering if this will be confusing. I did notice that CC sells VP history on their website, so it must be a viable combination. But how do you deal with the timeline? I guess what I'm asking is how do I combine CC with VP's curriculum and would it be possible to use Scholars with CC? TIA.
  6. Great list! I am planning to use Omnibus this year for self-education and this will be very helpful. Thanks!
  7. This thread is hilarious! I have laughed so hard reading these posts. The mention of "Bringing in the Sheaves" made me think about a lady at my church who told me that when she was a kid she thought the song said "Bringing in the Cheese".
  8. These are so adorable! If my dd6 wasn't so rough on her clothes, I would definately consider buying a couple of things.
  9. That is so beautiful. You have brought tears to my eyes.
  10. If you go on the VP website and view the sample of their new OTAE computer course, it has part of the song on the sample. The best I could tell from that sample, the songs include dates for some of the events, but not all of them. Hope that helps.
