We will be sticking with CVA this year because I am not financially prepared right now to provide the best education I can give my kids, but I am looking at it as a year to get myself ready to go without CVA. Unless this year goes far better than I am imagining or there are further changes to the law that make using CVA easier we will not be continuing with them after the 11-12 school year.

     

    Joann - Have you heard anything back from Keith yet?

    That said, these are far from essential. For $30 I think one can get a lot more bang for ones buck from other things. So how's that for a very mixed message? :D

    I will also add that my son has enjoyed reading them as easy readers and they have been very well-read from that.

This year my dd's GS troop did a year long service project at an assisted living facility, learned to geocache, camped including learning outdoor skills, practiced leaving no trace and cleaning up local parks, practiced tying knots, had a sleepover at the Pacific Science Center where they learned about robotics and lots more activities. Yes they have also done some cutesy crafts and scrapbooking, but there has been plenty of meat considering the girls are K-3.

     

    I would love to find a secular version of the BS for my son to join. I disagree with some of their policies and feel I cannot support their organization.

  4. We're allowed 100 books per card, and currently have 2 card holders, soon to be 3. The kids keep their pleasure reading books on their bedside tables, and I keep my pleasure reading books on my bedside table. General knowledge books or specific interest books for me are kept in the living room on a small portion of a large bookshelf. Books I plan to use for school are kept on a small table in the kids' room where we do our schooling. I also keep a cloth bag at the top of our banister that is used only for library books, both bringing them home and taking them back. Books that we are finished with go in the bag so it's ready to go on our next library day.

  5. The years that there aren't any choices that I approve of or that we don't already have I let the kids pick out a book to donate. We will donate to the library, food bank, local homeless shelter, toys for tots, etc. The kids still get to pick out their prize, which makes them happy, and I don't have to worry about bringing it home.

  6. If he has already practiced the word with the tiles and in writing, I'd let him go ahead and commit to a spelling in dictation rather than stopping him. He has already had some opportunities to see the word correctly. For one thing, you don't know whether he'd catch the mistake and correct it himself if you are always stepping in--and ultimately that's our goal. Plus at this stage, you are not focusing purely on visual skills--spelling actually involves using several skills. If he misspells a word and doesn't catch it himself, have him sound out what he wrote--see if he can catch it that way. If he pronounces it correctly instead of the way he wrote it, then sound out what he wrote for him. You can say, "That's right, we want the word ____, but you actually wrote ____. Do you know what to change to make it _____?" See if he can correct it at that point. Or review the rule. Ask, "There's actually a rule that applies to this word, do you know which one?" If he doesn't remember, you can bring it up and have him fill in the blank.

     

    By asking him questions and leading him to use the skills he's just starting to develop, you are teaching him how to think about spelling and think about his writing rather than doing that thinking for him.

    :iagree: I don't do any correcting of dictation until we are finished with that session of dictation. Having the child sound out the word they misspelled gets them to catch the error and fix it on their own most of the time.
