  3. So.... this is what I have been thinking about. I don't have any problems with my children taking the test, I'm even interested in their scores for math and language arts. My concern comes from other subjects like social studies and science and what will happen if my children receive poor scores in those areas. I will NOT teach to the test, so I know there will be areas that we may not have covered yet, but what are the ramifications of poor scores? Is CVA going to become even more interventive, with more teacher contact, more restrictions of educational materials, etc? I'd like to make an informed choice about testing, but I can't without knowing the risks.

  4. For me inspiring interest and love of learning is a paramount aim. And there I think MCT is demonstrably successful in our home.

Thank you, Bill! I loved this post, all of it. :D

  5. My lit books don't arrive until Monday. I haven't made any decisions yet, since I haven't seen them. My tentative plan would be to get through Grammar Island before starting the lit books. I'm not sure how long we will take reading them. We might not start them until next year if it feels like too much to add it this year.

Re-reading this, I see I had nothing helpful to say. Sorry. :(

  6. I really hope CVA allows for subscriptions to Discovery Streaming. :D I've been wanting to get one, but even through the Homeschool Buyers Co-op they are more than I can afford.

  7. RightStart Math has students keep a math journal. Wev had an assortment of problems, roman numerals, times tables, etc in ours.

I really like the idea of a spelling book, a grammar book, etc., but I'm not sure how to implement it when it isn't a part of the curriculum. It sounds like making a book for each subject would be like notebooking, but not on separate pages.

  8. Yeah, since we're working on curriculum and planning over the summer.... a school calendar would be really helpful! Then I could make those curriculum plans. Arrrgh!

And nothing in his letter about what we're allowed to order right now. When I submitted orders on the day the requisition form opened, I immediately had them kicked back to me because we are only supposed to order what we absolutely need to start the year. Which meant that I could order HO, but not any books I needed to go with it. They did allow the timeline, though. Which I just got an email from Loren about, it's an asset. I'm interested to see who would want to use it after we write all over it and put stickers on it. CVA makes me nuts!!!!

  9. My husband works in a specialized field in construction. So far this year he has worked a total of 4 weeks. Last year he worked almost 3 months, and that was better than the year before that. His unemployment runs out completely in September and all other job leads haven't turned up anything. He has applied for jobs in other fields and hasn't landed any of them. We are looking at moving in with family next month. Dh will end up taking any job he can find, and it certainly won't be for a living wage like he gets when he has union work. Our future has been uncertain for the last few years. It sucks. :crying: I keep crossing my fingers and hoping for a miracle.
