We don't go to a "Christian" Martial Arts school. We go to a Tae Kwon Do school run by a 5th degree black belt in TKD and 6th degree black belt in Hapkido. He happens to also be a Christian. He does not teach anything about religion. He teaches about respect; for oneself, ones teachers, and ones family. I would look for a straight martial arts class taught by someone who is walking the walk as well as talking the talk.

We would do the first part with the tiles, but when we got to the spelling lists further through the book, we just used pencil and paper. I still have him say each sound out loud as he writes down the letters. We went faster through those kind of things. The phonics and the rules we did at a normal pace. I was unsure, but it all became much clearer as we went along.

I have changed my mind, after long chats with ds, I am giving up fb and he is giving up pokemon!
I am going to work on not raising my voice or snapping at the kids, he is going to work on being a better listener and more patience with his little sister.
We are going to do morning prayer EVERY day, and take turns saying something nice and meaningful about each member of the family.
What would be a good thing for a 3(almost 4 year old?) or is she just too young?

We are getting ready to give up our "pay" tv, but that is because we have a wi for netfilx streaming on one tv, and I just got a roku for the other (Hulu), I can not miss Glee and how I met your mother

Yeah, Portland Area here too. I tried to keep an open mind about the step mom. I saw first hand what trial by media can do to an innocent family. I was also trying to keep optimistic that they would find him, especially after being so scared initially. My son is the same age as Kyron and this supposed stranger abduction happened so close to where we live. Terri Hormon's friend Didi that they think also had something to do with this lived less than 2 miles from me (she has moved). We had the police racing all around etc...
I have a friend in the know who told me that they know a lot, but it is still all circumstantial and that they only have one chance to try Terri and make it stick. This one is not going to turn out like Elizabeth Smart unfortunately.

I always liked Blood on Blood the most. I still have a girlfriend that I have had since I was 4, that kind of friendship is just amazing and the song gives me chills every time I hear it
Now Bobby, an uptown lawyer Danny, a medicine man
And me, I'm just the singer in a long haired rock 'n' roll band
Through the years and miles between us it's been a long and lonely ride
But if I got that call in the dead of the night, I'd be right by your side

Hmmm....
Well, I have an issue with not counting library books as school. We focus on the basics and everything else is strongly library based. Even our " regular" school day is strongly book based. And I would argue that with the ages of my kids (5 & 7), consistent reading ( by them and to them) is crucial. Older dd reads at least an hour a day. Whether it's Flat Stanley or Pollyanna or on Egyptians, I want her reading and developing fluency.
And, I have an issue not counting field trips. We took our girls to DC last spring and San Francisco the fall before. I would argue those museum trips were more beneficial than a textbook.
Now, beyond that.....
By your definition, we would probably only get 180 days. We don't go the whole summer without doing math (I think a large gap is very detrimental)
but we have lots of reading days and field trip days during the year.
:iagree:
We do "school light" in the summer. Lots of reading and games. I save things like computer games (Rainbow Rock and Vroot and Vroom from Singapore Math) as summer math.
Also, field trips. Summer is big on field trip learning for us. Last year we did a 10 day road trip. We walked in the wagon ruts of the Oregon trail in multiple places. Took note of how long it took us to drive from A to B and talked about how long that same distance took the pioneers. We went to 3 different areas of fossil beds. We hiked and looked at fossils and different types of rocks. To me, that is some of the best school we had all year!

Cheryl,
1. How is your sons handwriting. I ask, because most of the third grade boys I know suffer from handwriting problems. Maybe for the end of the year, you could get a copywork book and have your ds work on that in class while he classmates work on writing. Let the teacher know that you will correct it. That way you are keeping ds busy while the other kids are working, and not adding any work to his teacher. This is what I would do as a quick band aid so things don't get worse.
2. Get your hands on a copy of Writing with Ease. Library or buy it. Not the workbook, but the text. Read it. What your son is going through is so common, especially for boys. Writing is a huge reason why we left school last year. It is the #1 reason my son does not want to go back to school. This just explains it, you will get it, and it gives you great ideas of how to work with him after school.
My son is creative, I started having him dictate his stories to me. Read it, arm yourself with knowledge and then see if you can work with his future teachers where you provide something for him to do in class, and writing is done at home with you.
3. Look at AAS, just the first level will help with spelling. My son now knows how words work, and how to sound them out. It will be very easy, you can probably do it in the summer and will give him some phonic basics that he probably has not had in school.
Good Luck

I learnt how to read wit "A Pig Can Jig" It was just to difficult of a place to start with my son. I tried that and
Key words
He finally broke through with the Bob books, then he moved onto A Pig Can Jig.
I am going to try the AAR pre level 1 and possibly level one with my daughter, then move onto the Pig books.

We are going to be traveling a lot, including Disney, so there goes my unrefined white sugar idea for this year:lol:
I am thinking that I am going to give up snapping at my children. I have a dd who is about to turn 4, and she is really trying my patience. I have found that I am raising my voice or snapping one to two times a day at the moment, and I really need to work on that. I am going to pray a lot and see if I can go through all of lent without raising my voice or snapping at anyone (down to the dog). Going along with that, I am also going to say one really nice and thoughtful thing a day to both of my children and my husband. Not the routine "good job" but think of something specific everyday that I appreciate about each of them. We are going to do this as a family during morning prayer each day.
I am trying to get my ds to give up pokemon for lent. I am not sure about dd. She is only 3, I don't know if she will get it this year, we might wait until next year for her.

I plan on using ours as soon as it arrives, my dd is ready and chomping at the bit! I have never done any reviews before, but I will try. 2 other things
1. They lowered the price by a few dollars. I got an e-mail informing me of the price change and that I would be getting a partially refund. THis has never happened before. I have a habit of getting things RIGHT before they go on sale or the price is reduced. I have asked and NEVER been given the difference. I am shocked that their policy is that they contact you and give you back the difference.
2. Here is the return policy copied from the page for anyone interested:
My Unconditional One Year Guarantee:
If, for any reason, you are unhappy with your purchase, simply return it within one year - no questions asked - and I'll give you a complete refund of the purchase price.
I refuse to accept money from anyone who is not 100% completely satisfied with both the product purchased and our service.

I came to AAS through the Riggs Institute. I have a friend, from India whose daughter is in a charter school. Her daughter is a natural speller, I would not be surprised if she was at the Scrips spelling bee within the next few years. She is in 4th grade and just won the school spelling bee (against 8th graders)
She loves the Riggs programs and was just raving to me about it. I looked into it and it looks amazing. NOT packaged for do it yourself homeschool. Look at the site though, it really explains the theory in much more detail.
I went to our local Homeschool supply Exodus books. The owner there is really knowledgeable about the programs there. I told him what I was looking for. What our current problems in spelling were etc... I asked if there was anything similar to the Riggs program. I also wanted to look at spelling workout (WTM rec?) at the same time. He introduced and explained AAS to me. He gave me such a strong recommendation for it, combined with my friends love of the Riggs program (AAS is pretty close), so I took a leap and went for it. We went from "I hate spelling" to "spelling is my favorite subject" overnight. It has been such a joy. My son is 8, he gets such a happy look on his face when I tell him that it is time for spelling. I love it so much that I just bought AAR for my daughter.
The company is also great, check out their return policy. You can buy it, try it for a year and if it doesn't work for you, return it. This is copied from her site

I get nothing from this company, other than lots of really positive experiences with my dc

they have extended the 30% off until March 5th I think at Calvert

I went ahead and splurged. I love AAS so much! I was on the fence, and then I saw the money back guarantee. You have a year, no questions asked to return and get a refund.

If it is dh wanting a change, how about braided pigtails? They are kind of fun and young. My sister does that a lot, and it looks really cute and playful.

another FLL user here. We are in FLL3. I am planning on using 4 next year. we have been very happy with it, I have felt no need to look at other curriculum.

We started in 3a of Singapore this year, he tested into it (just). I found there was a lot he didn't know. I ended up getting the 1A text and HIG and we went through that mostly orally. It took about 3 weeks, so then we did 1B and 2A, we are now on 2B and going to restart 3A probably in the next month. I think it was great. If they aren't really comfortable in the basics, the rest is going to be a struggle for them.
We also started KUMON. They start really easy too, he is just working on addition. It seems too easy, but it has made his Math with me much smoother, so I am going to keep with it for at least 3 more months. I think part of what he likes with that is having someone other than me teach him for a subject.

Thank you Amy. I hadn't thought about the news. I think I started watching that a little when I was around 6th grade, it would probably be a nice easy way to bring in modern history.
What is CHOW?

My son likes them. We do them more in the summer and on breaks so that he does not forget stuff.
You ever feel like you have to start all over w/friends?

I am getting there too. This is our first year, and it was going okay until we decided that we are going to do this again next year. It was okay for me to "experiment" with hs, but I am the only one I know who is doing it. I think it might have to do with their own insecurities. That my homeschooling my kids is a judgment on them.I am a hs mom, as I believe it is best for our family, it is the thing that I have done in life that is totally selfish to our family, and really ignoring what everyone else is doing. That can't stop other people's insecurities. Even though hs is growing a lot, and fast, we are still stepping off the mainstream path. People get uncomfortable when you do something radical.
Those are two of my thoughts as to why it is happening. I know that I am increasingly happy that this board is here for support and questions. I have really clicked with one mom that I have met through hs. I can see how a lot of my friendships are going to change in the next few years.
