  1. Rainbow resources is great, definitely go to their website and order the catalog. It gives a change from sitting in front of the computer.

Even though it has increased my mail, I ordered tons of catalogs when I was getting started. I would go through them and put different color sticky notes (for different subjects) on what looked interesting. Then I made a list, per subject, of what looked interesting and then researched it. Know that no matter how much you research, there will be one or two things that just don't work, and that is okay.

    Some of my criteria were:

What is the teacher guide like? Is it scripted, or at least give A LOT of guidance? I wanted a lot of hand holding for my first year, as I learn about teaching my kids I might break away from some of the more scripted things at a later date.

I took my son to look at my 2 final choices for some of the subjects, I asked him what looked interesting to him. That helped with a few things.

I looked to see what the progression was, if I liked it would I be able to continue with it next year?

Then reviews, did other people like it? Take this with a grain of salt though. I have seen a lot of bad reviews on the DVD for Prima Latina and Latina Christiana. However, my ds loves them and has been learning a lot.

    Some catalogs to order

    My Father's World

I turned some into links to help you find them. I am sure there are many more, but those are what has come to my mind off the bat

  2. We just started this year. My dh got on board with the lets try it for a year approach and not make any decisions till after Christmas about the next year. We have just decided that we are going to continue through next year. He is now at the point where we can talk about the future, and what both of our ideal scenario would be for the kids. He is fine with the fact that i am HOPING to home school through 8th grade, but we are just going to take it one year at a time.

I had him write down his top 3 concerns. I then did the leg work and researched those concerns and came up with possible solutions and we talked them through. Then we did the next 3 etc...

The big thing, I found that telling him my doubts and worries helped. Turns out most of what I was doubting was myself, and that was not a worry to him at all. He felt better knowing that I was worried, and that he could support me too.

We also talked about what his role would be. I do all the set up and everything, but we do the fun science experiments on the weekend when he is home. He really likes that.

  3. We just got the SOTW3 on audio and I am wishing that I had not waited so long. My ds is older so what he is doing is listening to it, and reading along at the same time. Then he listens to it again while he is doing the coloring page.

I think it is helping for 2 reasons.

    1. we loaded it on his ipod, so that automatically makes it cool.

    2. It is not my voice. I wonder if he needs a break from me, the same voice teaching him everything. He loves it, it is some variety.

  4. look at My Father's World. MFW. They use Story of the world 4 in their rotation and have a way to combine it for a second grader. I am on 3, I have not yet reached 4. I understand that there is material in 4 that is really for a child 4th grade and above maturity wise. If you do a search you should find info on that.

  5. I have a third grade boy. We change on the day. We spend about 5 hours on Monday and Thursday. Then 1-2 hours on Tuesday and Wed, with Fridays for classes, field trips etc... I find that not doing the same thing everyday works, and ds can focus better knowing it is only really 2 long days every week.

  6. I love Jane Eyre. It is a Great Book, A classic and all those scary words, but it is an easy read and a great story. I found reading that made me less intimidated by other classics.

I HATE Moby Dick. But for any others who haven't liked it, try the Scarlett Letter. Melville and Hawthorne wrote around the same time, but I have found most people like one or the other, I haven't met many people who have truly loved both.

  7. We go to England every other year as dh is from there, we have stayed in all sorts of places, they can be really hit or miss. 2 of my favorites are:

If I have extra money I stay at the Strand palace.

    http://www.strandpalacehotel.co.uk/index.html

It is right around the corner from Trafalgar Square, right in the heart of the West End and everything. They run specials a lot. We sometimes have the kids sleep on the ground. It is nice, clean, central and you feel like you are on vacation. I just did a search and it would be 210 for 3 nights there.

The other place when we are not as rich is

    http://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/royal-national

You each have a bed, a bathroom in the room and it includes breakfast. It is clean, but very bare bones.

The place that I have had the worse luck with hotels, and is a lot harder to get to places from than you would think is Paddington.

  8. Sorry, one more thing. If you get the workbook, think about the pdf. Yes it is more spendy to start printing out the teacher part for you, but with 3 kids, it is nice being able to print out you pages, that way you don't need to buy it again for your other 2. Also, I have a 3 year old and I often print out 2 copies and she sits and pretends to write during our lesson, she loves that her paper looks just like her big brothers.

  9. The text book was one of the first things I bought when I was first thinking of homeschooling. It explains the why? you could get by with just that for the first four years. I got the workbook just for the easiness factor. I figured I had so much I was already trying to do. I have not seen the workbooks for 1 and 2, but 3 could stand alone. You could go either way. I am someone who needs to know the theory about why I am doing something (hence the text), but I also need easy to implement (the workbook).

    Hope that helps.

  10. I love this site. We got this. Totally not necessary, but fun. When it calls for a glass in the kitchen, we use a beaker. My son loves it. The one thing I would say is from the first experiment. I could not find regular food color drops, they all seem to be gels now. The gel does not work as well, and I was getting frustrated that our first experiment was going pear shaped. My dh had to rescue us (he is a research chemist) and he mixed the gel in water and then we put a drop into the water. It worked much better.

Book wise, we just have the text and the science encyclopedia. We have been having a great time with Chemistry this year.

  11. Thank you all so much. I think part of it is the fact that we have decided to keep going. This last year people could justify me homeschooling as ds school closed during the summer. I think my friends and family just thought I had briefly lost my mind. Now that we have committed to another year i am getting A LOT more questions. I think I need to work on the pass the bean dip approach and not doubt myself as much.

I really appreciate all the encouragement. I am the only only one of my friends and family who homeschool. It is nice to have a place that I can turn to who won't start listing off all the fine schools in our area whenever I have moments of doubt. I just need to keep repeating to myself that I am doing what I know is right for our family.

    Thank you

    Nicole

  12. I got my dh to do the big V. It helped that he had seen me go through t c-sections, one of which was a BIG emergence and it scared him. We decided that I had done my fair share after our dd was born.

The clincher though was that after dh has the snip. He has to have a certain amount of cups of tea(while still using protection) To make sure everything is out. I told him that if he got the snip, all of those cups of tea would be his choice. He could pick and choose all of his favorites from the variety pack that we have. It was actually a fun 6 weeks and brought us a lot closer, and he remembers that time with fondness.

Oh, and just because I am that type of person. I watched the procedure. I figure that he had seen me cut open, so it was only fair that I got to see a medical procedure. I saw one side, sat back down and told him that we were so not even. It is so not a big deal, I would be able to do it (not well) with an hours training. If you do a light pinch of the skin between your thumb and finger, that is how far in they go. The important thing is to make sure that the doctor does the shot slowly. I guess some doctors just do the shot quickly, and that stings, if it is slow, they barely feel it.

  13. Is the iron tablet that you are taking uncoated? Also are you taking it firsxt thing in the morning before eating?

My dad is a hematologist, and I know those are two of his biggest frustrations. People have low iron and their doc's tell them to take iron supplements, but not those two crucial points. He says he sees a lot of people who never would have had to see him if they did it that way. The coating on the iron tablets make it so that you do not really absorb any.

Also, it is a food item, but do you eat a lot of broccoli? We eat broccoli about 5 times a week, big servings as it is iron rich and we don't eat a lot of red meat.

  14. I wrote back in November as I was getting frustrated with all the holes I was finding. You all helped me so much, and I thank you.

The good news, we had the talk last week and decided that we wanted to continue homeschool next year. Yeah!.

However, with all the talk about planning for next year, I have realized just how far we are from finishing third grade. I am not sure what to do. Do we keep working through things and just start 4th grade late? Do we just drop and move on etc...

I re-read the WTM intro and that helped a little, but I still worry that I am going to end up holding my son back.

I am thinking of a mixture.

    Just keep going sequentially

    Math

    Spelling

    handwriting

    Latin

    Spanish

    Move on to 4th grade

    Science

    Not sure

    FLL

    WWE

    SOTW

Art and music did not really happen this year, but I am trying to look at this year as a decompression year. As someone said to me in my other post, we are learning how to homeschool.

    So I guess what I am looking for is;

Do I look like I have the subjects right of what to carry on with and what to draw a line with and start new in 4th grade?

What about the not sure list?

Will next year be easier? We just don't seem to be able to fit everything in.

Am I messing up my kid?

Thanks for reading, I am sorry to be such a pain in the neck newbie. Even with all the research I did, I didn't know it would be this hard.

  15. I started AAS with my third grader this year. We started it in October. I originally had spectrum spelling for third grade and he HATED it. He did not like spelling in 2nd grade at his private school as they did the same thing every week in b/w. So we found spectrum early on. It was color and the activities were varied every week, he still hated it. We changed to AAS and now spelling is his favorite subject.

I think that going to the beginning and have it easy is great for his confidence, it has changed his whole attitude. We would already be on level 2 if we did it three times a week, but we are only doing it about once a week this year. We have had to spend a lot of time on writing and math this year.

  16. I am happy with it too. At first I thought that I had made a mistake, as I was having issues with holes, we started in 3a as he had passed the placement test (just) But we got stumped on division. I tried MM, and that was not working as well, so I caved and bought 1B instructor guide and text, where they first introduce multiplication, division and fractions. (we plan on using for dd, so I was okay with the money) It was great, ds totally got it. So we bought the same of 2a and B. We are just going through what 3A assumes that you know having done the program. It has made all the difference. We are now flying through it and ds loves it.

I think that it is hard switching mid year. If anyone else was thinking of doing that I would recommend that they try younger editions for holes they find. I found this chart, that helped me to see what books first introduced our problem areas.
