  1. From what I understand, yes it is great. We are zooming through book 1. My son loves it though. He can do it, so it puts him is a positive mood. My friend has 2 girls at a charter school and they use the Riggs method. AAS is very similar in a home school version. From what I understand, they will be able to figure out pretty much any word by understanding all of these early concepts.

    Hope that helps.

  2. Oh, and I also have this although we have not started it yet.

    http://www.amazon.com/Health-Hygiene-Nutrition-Grades-3-4/dp/0742427579

Health, Hygiene, and nutrition. It is written for a class room, so I need to do some adapting. We are just going to do the Health and Hygiene part as I already told you what I am planning for nutrition.

We also have kids to the rescue, first aid for kids that I am planning on doing in the summer.

Last thing, one of the other reasons I like the food chart above, it has chocolate on it:lol:

  3. For Nutrition we are using this as our base

    http://www.med.umich.edu/umim/food-pyramid/index.htm

It is a food pyramid from the University of Michigan. One thing I like, is that the base is water. We did a compare and contrast vs. the USDA one and talked about how different they were. How it is good to look around and not just take the first thing you see as gospel . (The current USDA was heavily influenced by the dairy lobbyists. Dairy is as big as veg and bigger than fruit). We looked at some others and decided the Michigan one looks the most balanced. Now we are going through it and reading about the groups. We talk about how protein does different things in our body than carbs (there are great links on the site) Once we understand the importance and use of everything we are going to plan one month of food for our family using the food pyramid. Then we are going to shop and cook together. (I am hopefully that we will have the month planned out and eat that way for May.) I know it is not a set curriculum, but maybe it will help.

    Cheers,

  4. What level is she in, and did you start at the beginning? When my ds is really having trouble with a concept I go back to the first time SM presented it. The nice thing about the instructor guide is it usually gives the history of the concept and tells you where they did it before. We just go back and really make sure that the basic part was grasped and do a heavy review.

    Good Luck

  5. Hi,

First I did search for old threads first, maybe I was just putting the wrong words into the search.

Has anyone found some good links for the map outlines they talk about in the core? We have a great world map on our wall, so I am specifically thinking about the diagrams of the 5 great circles. In the book she says she enlarged those and printed 100, I think that sounds great, but I can't find any online.

    Help please.

    Cheers,

    Nicole

  6. This is my first year too, also with a 3rd grade DS. One thing someone told me early on that has helped. Don't stress too much, it is going to take awhile to get up to speed. You don't need 3 months off in the summer and just have the goal to be finished with 4 th grade when that is ready. I am just embracing that this year is all about finding out what the heck we are doing. He was in school before, so we keep stumbling across holes in his education. I stop and fix them, that is why I am homeschooling. We are going back over addition flashcards this last week so he gets really good at them.

Oh, and I find bribery helps. "If you focus and get your writing done in 20 minutes, we will do a mad lib (grammar))

  7. I agree with what the other posters have said. I have very few friends that I see socially from my church (it is 30 min away) About half my friends are Christian from all sorts of other denominations and half aren't. One of my best friends is Indian and is a very spiritual person. We love to share all sorts of things about our cultures. We cook together, are in a book club and talk a lot about our faiths. I have gone to some of her religious festivals, and she has come to Midnight Mass with me. My friends and I do all share a lot of core values. There is a small group of people who have given Christians a bad name, there are those people in any group. Whether you agree with it or not, look at it from an academic point of view. It is a beautiful religion with a lot of teaching of love, charity, and acceptance. However, no of us are perfect and most of us are always trying to be better and work on our short comings.

I really hope I don't offend anyone, but I am having more difficulty in finding things in common with the unschoolers that I am coming across at different local home school events. (I am hoping that is okay here as this is the WTM board) I just find that I have very little in common with them. I am working at being less judgmental, but so far it is not going so well. I make 2 steps forward and then someone tells me that her son is a genius as he knows the names of all the dinosaurs so she figures he is all good.

  8. It is not a curriculum, but we are doing a child's introduction to poetry. It has a CD, nice illustrations. We are really enjoying it.

Oh, and we haven't started yet, but we have Evan-Moor Poetry Patterns and themes. It is a workbook that teaches writing different types of poems.

  9. I put 3-4, but those are the huge Costco bags. People drive in to trick or treat here and I love it. We are next to a school with t cul d sacs off a long road, so kids can do about 35 houses with only crossing one street. We get so many people that where they have to cross the road we have a police car with lights flashing and an officer giving out candy. I always say it is the 1950's here on Halloween. Non stop kids, parents with flash lights walking behind. There are 2-3 houses that don't like it, but the rest of us really get into the spirit and the decorations are getting crazier and crazier each year.

Sorry, I am totally bragging, but I love Halloween and I love that I live in Halloween land. (with being dead end we don't get as much of the Christmas light stuff)

  10. First off, I am not asking for advice, I know that I did the right thing for our family. I just need to vent.

We got to gymnastics today, she loves gymnastics. We had a great morning. She is getting over a cold, (and I know that is why this happened) The music came on and she burst into tears.

I sat with her, calmed her down, blew her nose, by this time the warm up is over. I ask her if she wants to do class and she does. We walk over to the class, she sits down and bursts into tears again.

I walk her back to the side, at this point I can not really disrupt the rest of the class anymore. So I calm her down and tell her she has a choice. Gymnastics class followed by lunch at Applebees with my sister and her cousin, or home for a nap. She wants gymnastics. I make it very clear that there is no more crying and she has to do what the class is doing or we will be going home. She is good for about 90 seconds, and then the tears come again. So I said "right, we are going home and you are taking a nap" Tears the whole way home. Arghhhhhh!!!!!!!!

    I know it was right.

    a. I had to keep my word or I would have a bigger issue next time

    b. If she was doing all that she probably really needs the nap.

    But...

I was really looking forward to my lunch at Applebee's !

    Thanks for reading my vent.

    Cheers,

    Nicole

  11. The only one I have any experience in is the Singapore Math Home Instructors guide. I am not a math person, I majored in English Lit. So far math is one of our best subjects, I am surprised that he is learning Math from me. We jumped in at grade 3, We did great for the first 2 units and then we got to number bonds. My husband (who is good at Math) got it, just from the instructor guide. I was still a little hazy, so I bought the 1A instructor guide, now I understand it.

It is not scripted, it starts each chapter telling you the parent about the concept. If it is building upon something already done, it tells you when and gives you a review. If it is new, it explains why, how and all that. Then for the sub parts it gives you ideas of how to teach the concept with the manipulatives, games and the answers.

    I hope that helps

  12. We found that life helped with death. I don't know if you have ashes or anything. We lost a little kitten to FIP, just really sudden and way before it's time. We buried the ashes and planted a rose bush on top. It was nice seeing the flowers this spring, and it assures me that even though Tango's life was too short, we have a nice reminder of him and or the beauty around.

  13. I played around with laundry soap for awhile. I wanted scent free, and enviromentally friendly, but that would also get our clothes clean and soft. What works here and no one has reactions too is. Charlies powder ( I buy it from Little jumping beans) It only takes a tablespoon and lasts forever. So the price is okay. I combine with the shake lee scent free dryer sheets (the recyclable ones)
