  1. Probably just the desire that we all have to make sure that we are giving our children the very best. I don't think it is bad to do a quick search to see if something new has come out since you last reviewed whenever moving up to the next level. If it is all still the same Math programs that were there when you first made the decision to use MM then I would stick to the program that is working.

  2. Not Enid Blyton, but another fun series of books that most children over here don't read. All creatures great and small by James Herriot. A little early for my DS to read, but he loves listening. It also has a great TV series that goes along with it available on Netflix.

  3. My mother and husband are both from the UK So, we all grew up with Enid Blyton. She is good for all ages.

Start with her story books, My daughter LOVES Noddy.

My son read the Secret 7 in first and second grade

The adventures of the wishing chair and the Magic faraway Tree in 2nd

He has started the famous five this year, then he will do the mystery's and the adventurous 4 after that.

For girls start around 1st 2nd grade with The Naughtiest Girl(still one of my favs) follwed by St. Clares and Mallory Towers.

Pre JK Rowling and I am not sure about now, Endi Blyton is the best selling children's autor in the world, just not much here in the USA. I have friends from Australia and India and they grew up with her too.

I am always happy when new people discover her. She is great. Although funnily enough, she didn't actually like children much... very interesting lady.

  4. Today is the last day of buy one get one free on the history pockets. I already have mine for this year, and I am getting the civil war for next year, but I am looking at 5th grade when we are back doing the Story of the World 1. Should I get Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome or Ancient Greece? Which does SWB spend less time on? What would benefit from a supplement?

    Thank you.

Oh, the code for anyone else interested is HP810

  5. My DS is a big reader, so it is not something I have worried about. He goes to bed at 7 each night and can read until 8, but he reads a lot more than that. Today being a Sunday I think he has spent about 6 hours with his nose in a book.

Instead of assigned reading, I have "mom's pile of books" Every time he reads one of those for the first time, he gets a sticker. When he hits 20 he gets a reward. For the most part that is our reading plan.

  6. I agree with the quiet time. My kids both do a 2 hour quiet time every day in their rooms after lunch. I have a 3 year old and an 8 year old. This time doesn't mean they are quiet, it is mom's quiet time. As long as they are in their rooms, and not doing anything to disturb me, we are good. This is something that my mom did with us growing up, and I never minded it. It might be a little rough getting started, but they can handle it. My dd plays with her dolls while singing to herself most days. My ds reads or plays with his star wars.

Another thing, I saw a quote by Tony Robbins about knowing your season of life. If you are doing the right thing at the wrong time life can be chaos. I understand the dream of being a writer, I have a novel I am working on too. I worked on it over the summer, but I have shelved it for now. I am hopeful that after we get everything sorted and a school year routine settled that I will be able to slowly work on it. I also have made peace with the fact that summer and Christmas might be be writing times while the kids are this age.

  7. Hi,

I am also Episcopalian and in my first year of home school. Do you have a copy of the book of common prayer at home? We are starting by doing morning prayer each day and following the schedule in the book of common prayer. I am having him work on memorizing the Lords Prayer. We are also doing Christina studies 1 from Memoria press and he is enjoying that (but my ds is 8)

I have myself fallen out of the habit of morning prayer, so this is helping me get back on track. Also, there are some nice books about just explaining why we do what we do and at what time. A childs guide to the Eucharist etc..." The Episcopal bookstore is great. They are based out of Seattle and I have exchanged e-mails many times with the when I need help with a book.

    Good Luck,

    Nicole

  8. I am looking for about 7 3rd grade boys who would like to take part in a flat Stanley project. I don't want it to get too big, and I would like my 3rd grade son to maybe gain some pen pals out of it. In the interest of penpals, I want to do this as a non digital, instant form of Stanley,

We would each do a flat student. Either a Stanley or a photo of the child and Make a journal to go along with the flat student. One page for information on where the flat student is and a photo, one page for each student to write about themselves and a photo. This would then be sent to the next person on the list. We would each have about 3 weeks, to get the work done and send it on, so not in a rush. Then at the end of the year we would get our flat student back with a book filled with the adventures, and maybe some future pen friends.

PM me if you are interested and then I will send my real e-mail through that.

  9. I was in England so it was afternoon. I was cross stitching and watching the film "where the heart is" My dh called from work and told me to put the news on. I was already watching in disbelief at what was happening, and then the 2nd plane hit live on TV. I couldn't get hold of anyone, I remember being scared not know where the 4th plane was headed. I still can't cross stitch for some reason. I was born in NYC, my family is from there. The towers were opened the year I was born.

  10. I wouldn't say it was a curse word, but it is one of the words that I don't use or allow my children to use without careful consideration of how it is being used.

ie suck the lollipop don't bite it.

    Our other words are

    hate

    fart (I prefer pass gas)

    can't

    never

    you get the idea.

One thing that my mum told me when I was little, and it has always stuck with me. Is that slang and curse words show a lack of imagination and creativity. We have a language filled with many words and can come up with many ways to express displeasure. For one thing if someone cuts us off while we are driving we call them some sort of vegetable, because they are exhibiting as much brain power as a vegetable at that time. "what a radish" is more fun.

  11. Thanks Aimee, no I will not be doing every subject every day. That was just my idea of which weeks to start everything.

Math and spelling will be everyday

Latin will be 3x a week

Spanish 2x(we are just doing that as he had 3 years of Spanish at his old school and we don't want him to lose it)

    WWE 4x

    FLL 2-3x

    History 3x

    Science 2x

Christian Studies and Lessons in responsibility will be about 5-10 min a day, at 1 lesson a week.

Does that make it seem a little more reasonable?
