Thank you to everyone. So I think I will start off with just Singapore Math, and I have the IG so I can do extra drilling. If it seems like he is not getting it and needs more practice I will look into Singapore's Supplements. If he still needs extra work, I will post on the board and choose a secondary program.
I really appreciate the replies as I no longer feel like I am totally missing something. I am already overwhelmed and a little scared about starting home school, but these replies made me feel better, and confirmed there is a support network here. Thank you.
One more question, what is CWP? I could not find it on the board abbreviations page.

I see so many posts where people are doing Singapore Math and another Math program. This is our first year home schooling, am I totally missing something?

Thank you, I was hoping the DVD's would mean I didn't have to teach as I am teaching every other subject save for Spanish. Sounds like that is not going to work.

Oregon: It is amazing here.
The coast is wonderful with cliffs pouring into the ocean.
If you ever watched Goonies, the rocks that they have to fit in the medallion are at Cannon Beach, the largest is called Haystack Rock.
Devil's punch bowl
Depoe Bay and whale watching
Newport, lots of murals, quaint old fishing town, and a great aquarium.
Florence has great sand dune. All the coast places have Mo's chowder houses with the most amazing clam chowder.
Columbia River Gorge
multnomah falls, lots of falls around Oregon
Mt. Hood and Timberline lodge (the outside they used for the shinning)
Crater Lake
Ashland Shakespeare Festival.
White water rafting in Hell's Canyon, the deepest Gorge in North America, deeper than the grand Canyon
John Day Fossil beds
Ghost Towns ie, Shaniko
Portland
Powell's bookstore
Chinese Classical Gardens
Japanese Gardens
Wonderful Restaurants
The forest's are beautiful, and for those of you who are Twilight fans, a large amount of the first film was around Oregon. Oxbow park, the falls, and the gorge
I love it here, I have been all around the USA and Europe and keep coming back.

anyone?

How long is each lesson on the DVD?
Does anyone here use the DVD's with teaching? How does it work, how much time does it take? Do your kids like it?

Sorry, I was distracted as I wrote that last post. I neglected to say that it was a very good point that you made, and you should point it out to Sonlight. Sometimes we look at history from the way things are now, rather than from the view point of back then. I often forget that they did not know everything that we now know at the time they were doing things.

It still is that way in the UK and at some Anglican churches in the US. THe Episcopal church has changed to anyone being able to take part in communion. Part of their "Everyone is welcome at the table"

I third or fourth home learning year by year by Rupp. Also the everything homeschooling book by Linda Dobson. That one helped me to understand the different theories, and what spoke to me. The read aloud handbook is good, but also Honey for a child's heart that I saw someone else recommended. It is wonderful.

About 50-50. I think a lot of people are biting their tongues. There is also a pressure to put him in school as the schools are suffering and why would I want our school to do without the money (something that never was a mentioned when he was in private school, but now that I am doing it on my own...)
I am in SW Portland. There are a lot of home school families around, not so much in my neighborhood.

They are really great and I love them to pieces, but this will be the first visit since we decided to home school their grandson. They are both from England, so this is another thing their nutty American daughter in law has come up with. My FIL was the hear of the Math Department at the local Grammar School. I just really want them to be on board.
So here is the panic, I want to get our school space just perfect so they will be wowed. I have been met with such negativity from most places since we have decided to home school, I just want them to be on board. If our family gets it, it will help me ignore the other negative noise out there.
I am putting a copy of The Well Trained Mind in their room, so I am hoping that Susan will help a little. I spent a week with my mom and I got her on board. She went from being dead against it to saying that if the resources that are available now were available to her she might have home schooled me.
Sorry, just needed to have a panic. Thanks for reading.

We haven't started to use it yet, but I got the "Hey Andrew teach me some Greek" It lays it out in a really clear way.

That sounds like such a great first day. Can you show a closer picture of your survey? That sounds like a great idea.

I am using Story of the World 3 this year as my spine. We are going to work through that, and take a little longer when we get the the US history parts. That way he is getting the idea of where the US history fits into world history. I am using the story of the USA, some Evan Moor History pockets and other little things that I have accumulated to fill out the US side of it.
When we are in years 1 and 2 which don't have much US history I am going to use that time to do our state history one year, and a cultural study of America the other year. Food, customs, dress, differences in regions etc...

My 8 year old boy has had a lot of problems staying on task. I think the feedback he got from his teacher last year made it worse, one of the reasons he is staying home with me now. I talked to a counselor about it, and she told me that independent work is something to be taught, and that a lot of times we expect too much out of kids. One of her big frustrations is that teachers now will not remind kids to empty their homework folders. Even if the kid does there homework, puts it in the folder and takes it to school, they don't always remember to turn it in, then it is marked as late and the child is made to feel bad (again, our problem last year)
So, I talked with my son and told him that he is not a forgetful person, he just has not been taught independence at a good rate. Every night I right a list for him on the white board, and I put a small amount of work in his daily work folder, with notes on it. I put this on the school table. My husband reminds him after breakfast that he needs to do his work. If he gets his work done by 9am he earns half an hour of screen time (computor, ds, or tv)
So far it is working, and he is feeling better about himself too. In another month or so, I will add one more thing, and just keep doing that at a pace that he can handle.

Check what he is on. Ativan has a slight amnesic effect to it and they give that to a lot of patients before surgery. Also, he might be over medicated. I have had that happen to me, they cut the narcotics by about a third and I was much better

We are "officially" starting on Monday the 13th of September. We have been do school lite over the summer. One or 2 days a week. A little of his Spanish and math so that he doesn't forget it all. Math though is Rainbow Rock the computer games from Singapore Math. He thinks that it is a game. We are also doing some work on explorers that were before 1600 in preparation for Story 3. It is a heavy history year, and doing that before we really start makes it lighter for me.

Thank you everyone. I am doing third grade this year, so I think I might give it a miss until he is going into 5th or 6th grade. I am pretty comfortable with the elementary curriculum that I have chosen, and that will be good for these next two years. Maybe there will be a closer convention by then too, but I will definitely go with a plan of attack.
Cheers,
Nicole

I am in Oregon, and I almost went to the Midwest home school convention this year but I could not get the money together. Is there a convention of that size closer to Oregon. Would it help with my home school journey? I just wonder if I should make the time early on, I don't want to be 5 years down the road and kicking myself for not going earlier.

Assume the friend is throwing the shower, and call and offer to help. Let her know that it is early and that you understand that she is probably not far along in the planning, but if she needs any assistance you wanted to offer her some. That way if the friend hasn't thought of it, you give her a chance to do so, if it gets to close to the wedding she might feel bad that she didn't think of it.
An English tea is always a good shower theme (babies and bridal) little tea sandwiches. Easy to make and fairly inexpensive. I get one loaf of white and one of brown and make the sandwiches with one of each slice of bread. looks cute. Then cut one set of sandwiches into triangles, and the other into fingers. Cucumber sandwhiches are just butter and cucumber slice with a little salt and pepper. I then usually do egg salad for the triangles.
Good luck

I am with Audrey again. I take care of all the money, it works better that way. For us anyway. DH just is not interested in shopping and spending.

Thanks for posting that. With just starting out on this journey it is nice to hear a positive outcome like that.

I have never used the IG, wish I hadn't bought it. However I love the program. My son's handwriting was horrible. We started this and I saw an improvement with in a week. (He is 8)
The one thing the manual said to do, that I think is important, is sit next to them as they are doing there letters and correct them as they make mistakes. Don't let them do the whole sheet by themselves, and then tell them it is wrong. You don't want them practicing the wrong way. The biggest I say is "remember, always start from the top."
