  1. We used wordly wise for my oldest when she was in 3rd grade. I really liked it because it has reading comprehension and vocabulary. But now we are using Classical Writing which incorporates vocabulary which I like better because I don't have a separate curriculum to deal with. I think that if your curriculum is rich in language that a separate vocabulary is not necessary (of course my opinion)... :)

  2. For him, it did turn out to be food-related. We had an IgG food sensitivity test done (not because of the body odor - for other reasons), and after we eliminated the foods he was sensitive to he had zero odor.

I can still tell when he eats something that he's reactive to - after a couple hours, the underarm odor is back.

That is interesting because I often think that maybe it is the chemicals in our food reacting to cause the odor. What foods does he react to? Natural or with preservatives?

  3. My experience is that as a young girl, in the 80's I was told by church leaders that Christians didn't do yoga and I wasn't interested anyway and didn't really care one way or another and never researched it. Thanks.

My experience was the same in the 80's  I have often thought about the preacher's wife who told me the same thing. But she explained her reasons more in detail. She held out her arms and told me that they will tell you you are bearing the weight of the world as you hold your arms out straight for an extended period of time. Then as you slowly let your arms down you will feel the weight of the world slowly rise upward and you are FREE...

To her, it was wrong because it is not Jesus that set the yoga practicer free. She explained the New Age movement is of satan...

Our leaders also stressed to us not to study and other religion too much or we would become brainwashed. Looking back now, they must have not been very confident about their religion

  4. There are always 2 sides to every story. It would be good if there was someone who will listen to both of them without judging. They may both be at fault and not realize it. There may be ways for him to see he is hurtful, then he may never and it may get worse. The children will always be their fathers too and there is no way to completely break the ties. I'm for working it out if there is any hope :)

  5. Dh said for me to remember that we have a good life, good kids, are not strugging financially and were just fine before all this trust fund business and will be just fine now.

You are very blessed! Just keep your head above the family issues and money. We all think that some money would help us out of our problems, but the reality is that we should be thankful for what we have (non-materialistic) rather than worrying about what we don't have (monetarily). I hope you feel better about it all - it really shows how low a human being can become if they try hard enough :( But it is up to you to show the rest of your family that it is not worth worrying about. You have much higher issues to attend to :) Good luck to you....

  6. I am glad you posted this Pam. I think a lot of people are overlooking this company. I got the binocular 1600 scope for $189. I also bought the homeschooling slide set. I really feel that it is great microscope for the price. I also did not want to spend money now on an elementary scope then end up later buying another for high school and college. I hope this one will last all the way through!

I found a SUPERB deal on an awesome HUGH quality microscope!

amscope.com (same people who make Nikon cameras, and other high quality stuff)

After almost earning a degree in microscope research , I desided on the 40X-1000X Binocular Biological Michroscope w/ mechanical stage. (model: B100-MS)

    Here are the details

It is $169.00 + I paid $16.83 for UPS Ground.

I know DD will not NEED this high of magnification, however, she will need it later, as she wants to be a vet.... So, hopefully, money well spent. Plus, I have two boys who will be using the scope soon enough!

    Hope this helps someone! :001_smile:

  7. My husband "usually" works from 1 PM to 8 PM Tuesday through Thursday, and from 1 PM to 9 PM Saturday and Sunday, in the fall, winter and spring.

In the summer, he extends his day by 1 hour (so til 9 PM Tues-Thurs, and til 10 PM Fri-Sat).

These are only his hours if he's not busy, though. If he has a customer (he's a tattoo artist, by the way) he stays until the work is done. Sometimes, especially in the summer, there can be some very late nights.

I look forward to Sundays and Mondays when he's off and we can all have dinner together!

ETA: This was just ONE of the many reasons I decided to homeschool- now at least the kids get to spend all morning and early afternoon with him, as opposed to him coming home at or after bedtime!

What does your husband do that allows this schedule? That would work great for us!!

  8. No, don't try :( I sit things on my glass top stove all of the time thinking they are safe, I will not turn the wrong button ;) But I almost set my house on fire today too! I set the tea kettle on the burner and flipped it on - went back through the house, lit a candle and began cleaning... In a few minutes smelled something horrible burning - so I shouted at my son to stop playing in the candle!!! He said he wasn't but I kept smelling it so I went to investigate then the kitchen was filling up with smoke...

I had turned on the WRONG burner - AND left the pressure cooker lid laying on the stove - It has a rubber ring (well, it did)... Now my entire house smells like burnt rubber and we have all doors open with fans in windows... I think we will be doing school work outside for a while :001_huh:

So, no... don't set ANYTHING except a kettle on the glass top stove... Never, never, never... (I wonder how long I will actually keep my own advice??)

Someone once suggested placing the crockpot on my glass stove, and I thought it was a good idea. Now, I don't think I'll try.
  9. I have a sonlight microscope and this one from amscopes

My children are all under 10, but I wanted a microscope that we can use through high school and really experience it. I LOVE the binocular scope that has the higher power... The only thing that I would change is the light bulb. The sonlight microscope has the flourescent bulb with can be left on for a long time without hurting the slide. The Amscope binocular scope (Has SO many features and powers) but the bulb is tungsten which is ok, but just has to be turned off after looking at the slide.

Another feature that sonlight says is special on their scope is the single focus tuner. The amscopes microscope has 2 seperate focuses but we like it better because you can really focus better - even my 7 year old uses it and enjoys it.

I am trying to decide which one to sell. It is a hard decision - only because of the bulb. My husband has looked at the amscopes microscope and may try to change the light fixture (he is handy like that)...

Good luck to you in your search!

  10. Last minute can get some good deals, but you can not always find flights and arrangements for a family of 6 :(

We always go in off season. One way to travel in the US is to stop at rest areas and pick up the coupon books for hotels. We usually pay no more than $40 for a hotel (double room- kids sleep free). So if you go when gas prices are low and take a cooler of food and drinks, you can travel for minimum that way.

We have traveled to Morocco a few times and we could pay $20,000 for our trip. BUT unfortunately we hardly make that in a year :) so we have to go off peak season. It is actually very cold when we go in late february but by the time we come home in late april it is wonderful weather. Peak season begins in late april. The cheapest we bought tickets was $450 each and the most was $600. For a family of 6 this adds up to be between 3 and 4 K. We do stay with family for most of our trip, but also travel inside Morocco.

On our last journey we took a camel trek into the desert. The advertised rate was $60 per person (which would have been $360) but my husband talked him down to $60 for all!! Camel trek on 3 camels, 6 people, overnight in the desert with tagine dinner and breakfast, local african music and tea, and all the fun you can imagine tumbling down the sand dunes. This was because it was not peak season! But the weather was still nice...

Don't think that you can not travel because you do not have the money. Buy a good back pack for everyone and drive somewhere. Even here in the US we have many, many different places to see and experience in state parks!

You could go to alaska on the cruise route for cheap! Take the passenger ferry from Bellingham WA and a sleeping bag - camp out on the upper deck with your family - the best experience! When whales are spotted to the side of your boat you are the first to see them!
