  1. I have just started using switched on schoolhouse to save some mommy time as well. We love it so far but we are only using history and science regularly. I like it because it is all inclusive yet easy to rearrange the schedule. You just assign what you need and all of the grading is done for you. For math we use singapore but i am using tests only in sos for review because we will take standardized tests this year. It is kind of expensive but you may be able to get it inexpensive used. I hope you find what you need :)

  2. Do any of you have a small business for your children making homemade items? Right off the first thing that has come to my mind is for them to make lip balm, crochet scarves, simple sewing projects with natural fabric. Anyone have experience with this? Where do you get supplies? How do you have the kids to market their items? Any ideas?? Thanks!

  3. We have an android tablet 10" and LOVE it! It functions as a computer, wifi, book reader, holds educational games (transfered by usb or downloaded from the internet), plays movies, etc. I am not sure that I would pay for an e-reader only when you can spend a little more and have a complete system in your purse :) Technology is changing so fast!

Yes. ;) It's possible to download iBooks, Kindle, Nook, and Kobo apps on the iPad (possibly more, that's just where I stopped!)... That way we can get access to all of the current major ebookstores from one device for comparison shopping. :)

I don't know a thing about other tablets, but have read that quite a few will be announced at CES this week.

  4. I do not have an ipad, but I have an android tablet. Some of our application cds that we download onto the computer and do not need the disc to use can be transfered using a USB. My husband takes care of this for us, but I think it would work on the Ipad if you have a usb port to transfer files. It will depend on the space needed for teaching textbooks too. I guess the big factor will be do you have to put the TT cd in every time you use it or can they be downloaded to your computer?

  5. We love the National Geographic Kids and actually all of the National Geographic magazines...

I had a book business for a while and sold magazines as a part of it, so I still have my magazine side of the business. I sell them cheap (usually cheaper than are on ebay) to friends and family. I can extend that here if there is any interest. I am not home right now, but will post a list of a few popular ones on the for sale list...

Example: American Girl and Boys Life are less than $10 (I have to look them up for exact prices)

Many mom magazines (Rachel Ray, Whole Living, Home and Garden, etc) are around $5-8

  6. I took care of all of the finances for 10 years and it was so stressful! I suppose if we were actually making enough money to cover all of our expenses easily it would have been easy. I really do have the organization and planning ability to take care of it easily and enjoy it. However, in our case we were going behind and then my husband would blame me for 'spending' too much. I see myself as frugal, but when he was upset all of the time I felt horrible.

Anyway, we had a readjustment! I told him I am not going to be responsible for them anymore - I gave him everything and said do not ask me to pay anything. So, he has his phone app that reminds him when bills are due and he takes care of everything. I just tell him when I need money and it works SO much better :) He feels that he knows that I am not 'spending' too much, even though nothing changed except he has full control now. I feel free!

  7. I am currently looking at this: http://www.classicalwriting.com/index.htm

I am very tempted to give it a shot.

We use this both Aesop's and Homer... LOVE it. It incorporates grammar, vocabulary, a little history and writing. We have used WS fairly successfully and IEW without success. But when we found Classical writing I was thrilled. The cost is reasonable and you can reuse the books with other children.

  8. I think that you can possibly find a used wii used where the owner has hooked it up to the internet and already downloaded some games so you would get a great value!

My #1 recommendation for a game is OUTDOOR ADVENTURE. It is great for the entire family. There are various challenges and you can play alone, with others as a team, or in competition. It is excellent for teaching communication when playing in a team and for increasing coordination. There are many variations of games in this one game. It is more expensive than most games but it comes with a floor pad so it senses your feet movements. It is really great for fun, exercise, communation skills and coordination. One person may be guiding with the controler while another person has to jump at the right time in coordination with the person holding the controler.

It is really hard to explain - the best thing is to try it out, but by far it is our family favorite. The only reason that I agreed with my husband (who would buy EVERY video game out there) to buy the wii was for the movement.

  9. I love to be at home! I do not like being out if I don't have to. We have music class on Monday mornings then try for the park with friends or a goodwill shop before coming home. Home on Tues, Wed, Thurs for school. Then Friday is our field trip day and evening is Ymca night for swimming. Saturday is family day for us and sometimes we will go somewhere and sometimes we just stay home and catch up on cleaning and schoolwork. Sunday afternoon is our Arabic school so my husband and I have 4 hours of time together shopping and lunch before picking up the kids :)

Last year we did Karate 3 evenings a week and I was crazy :) But we are looking at starting gymnastics in January for a change of exercise so we will see how that goes...

I really do not know how to get school in when we have to go out on a day. Maybe it is just me, but when I go out (even just into town for a short errand) it seems that I can not get into school when we get back in the house.

  10. I'm not Christian but I pray and know the power of prayer. I may have different concepts about why it works, but I know it does. You are wlecome to pray for me :) May your prayers be returned to you a thousandfold :)

If someone prays for me, I am touched. Actually there are so many thousands of people on this earth right now this very moment praying for us all, praying for peace, praying for our governments to come to their hearts and see clearly and act in integrity, praying for the environment, praying for each other...it is truly beautiful. There are people of all faiths and no faiths praying. I personaly have met one Indian saint who prays al the time- all day and much of the night- for the awakening of the world, for people to come to their hearts and love each other. He is 88 and has been doigng it for the last 50 years. So whether we like it or not- we are all being prayed for, in the most beautiful and sincere way, all the time :) It is a deep spiritual practice for many people to pray for everyone. I love it.

Thank you Peela for this! This is the attitude that we all need to have no matter our religion if we are going to ever come to an understanding of each other. I am somewhat of a humanist and my husband is Muslim. I do believe in prayer myself - but it is more than 'who' you are praying to. For me it is the universal power of prayer and good thoughts. I am not an atheist and can not say how they would feel, but I imagine that they would rather have good thoughts be coming rather than no thoughts at all. I would like to hear opinions on that.

I was raised Christian and I lived first hand the judgmental attitudes of one being better than another because of their beliefs and it just makes me sick to my stomach that people can feel this way. It just defeats our spirit. Also, the Christian thought that I grew up in was manipulative in that someone would be praying that something would happen in anothers life (good or bad) to make them wake up and find Jesus. There was a lot of negativity in this.

Anyway, thank you for making the beautiful post. We are all one :)

  11. I sold on ebay some time ago as a way to pay for our homeschool things and I got tired of the fees too. However, if you are listing items that are in demand then it is not so bad. I always allow 20% in my mind to cover paypal, ebay and extra shipping costs (gas if I have to drive into town to the post office, tape, printer costs, etc). So, If I am selling an item that I think will reach $100 as an auction I will expect to gross $80. Now, if you are adding features to your listing (reserve, bold, etc.) then expect it to be more...

  12. I have been implementing our curriculum from various sources (WTM, Latin for Children, Classical Writing, Various reading, singapore Math, etc). However, all of these take a lot of time from me as the teacher/parent to implement. I am needing to finish my own college more quickly so I am going to attempt 12 hours in the spring and summer (have been taking 6 hours). This is going to make my time extremely tight. So, in a last minute decision I have purchased 3 levels of Switched on Schoolhouse. I hope I have not made a poor decision. I have read very mixed reviews.

We love Singapore math so will use the SOS for LA, Science, and History. I wanted to test them at the end of this year too, and I thought this may align more toward the standardized exams (I can not believe that I am saying this because I have always been so far away from standardized anything).

So, have I lost my mind? Is it still going to take a lot of time from me? My kids are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. My husband teaches them math so that takes a huge chunk away. They also attend Arabic and religion courses on Sunday for 4 hours.

Will they get all that they need or do I need to supplement much with this? I am considering this ONLY for me to get through school which should be 1 year from now - if I go on for my masters it will be 2.5 years.

    Any thoughts are MUCH appreciated!

  13. We have always had good success with frontline. I would definitely get something that the vet recommends. We just used a Seargents line of it from the pet store (thinking I would save some money) and my cat just about died. He began shaking and it seemed he was hallucinating. When I called the emergency number they kept telling me that it is usually the dog medicine that causes problems. There must be a lot of this happening because I googled it and animals have reactions a lot.

I will never use pet store flea medicine anymore. I just recommend to get what the vet recommends.
