  1. I don't think you are crazy either :) We do the same thing with picking and choosing from all that you have mentioned plus some. My oldest is in 5th now and we are starting chemistry from the 7th grade spiritual syllabus. I just like how it is all tied to history and the depth is not too much, yet just enough for us. My 3rd and 4th graders will join in. The beauty of homeschool is that you CAN pick and choose and you do not have to follow just one persons ideal path. Good luck on your journey :)

PS. I have a lot of the books you are wanting to buy, ;) but I am not ready to part with them... I will be glad to answer questions for you though!

  2. I think it is much simpler than saying anger is sin, because that can get extremely complex. I always tell my kids that we all get angry because that is human nature. It is how we control that anger and what we do with our actions that makes a difference in our lives. I don't think that anger itself can be counted as a negative thing. If someone does something horrible to you or your family you would definitely be angry. But, would you in turn kill them? Would you try to hurt them directly in response to your anger? I think the thing to do is for us to control the natural anger that is present and use our minds when reacting. That will reap better rewards in whatever sense or religion that you practice.

  3. Thank you all! We had a wonderful whirl of about 4 hours in the city. We got out of the subway at Sol and just walked around the streets, did some window shopping, and found a buffet of great food. We let the kids play in the mazes of shrubs in the palace gardens. It was a lovely chilly Madrid evening :)

  4. Thank you Stacia, that does help! I am kind of ashamed to admit this, but the last time we were in Madrid I was craving Mexican Tortillas.... We were all exhausted from travel and we were only there for about 30 hours which included security, picking up luggage, changing airlines, getting a hotel, etc and I just wanted to sit, rest and eat some good Spanish food...

SOOOOOO... my husband told the waiter at the restaurant that we wanted tortillas with no meat in his broken spanish and we waited for a long time. I kept thinking - it will be so delicious to get real spanish tortillas ;)

Then when he came there were eggs, more eggs, and more eggs :001_huh:

I just wanted tortillas that we know in America. Then I felt real silly when I had that ahah!! moment and realized that the Spanish food we are used to at home is Mexican, not Spanish

So, thank you for the info - We will be prepared to eat eggs this time around.

  5. I began using Aristotle Leads the Way last year for my 3rd and 4th graders. They enjoyed it for a few lessons but I was not able to keep my 2nd grader involved so we put it away until this coming fall when they will be in 3rd, 5th and 6th.

One last thing: for anyone who used the Hakim Story of Science books, for what grade / age would you say these are appropriate? Would each one take a whole year?

I like the idea of using those as a spine, but in the past I've been a failure at pulling off experiments. I really need something that has already pulled everything together for me. Cost is not an issue as much as ease of use.

  6. I think it is totally up to the responsibility level and maturity of the teen. I have seen 17 year old teens acting like 12 year olds and I would not let them go. Yet, many 17 year old teens will be mature while still having a great time. There are many travelers who are young and I wish that I had have had that opportunity when I was a teen! I did not get out on my own to travel until 22-23 and I regretted not having the encouragement to do it before.

  7. I do not know the laws, but I would think that you would still fall under Japan's laws for homeschooling if that is still your residence. I think you would be considered just visiting here in the US.

I really did not reply to give an answer - I just wanted to say my heart goes out to all of you who are in this situation. It must be hard, but thankfully it seems that you are able to have choices. Good luck to you.

  8. We arrive in Barrajas airport at 5pm on a Monday. We have done this before and spent more time figuring out where we were than seeing anything. This time I would like to have a couple of places to head to from the metro.

    ANY budget ideas for food?

We are thinking of the Prado because it is free between 6-8 pm. We have a hotel that will pick us up from the airport after sightseeing. Thanks for any advice!

  9. We have a small (hand size) external hard drive. It hooks to your computer with a usb and is small enough to carry in your pocket. Yet, it can hold thousands of pictures and documents. You can get different sizes, but I think my husband just showed me a new one at Target that is in TB rather than in GB. Someone else who knows can give you exact numbers :) But the one he showed me was $99 and he said it would hold a lot. However, if you are just storing a small amount then you can get one MUCH cheaper. We always keep our pictures on this as well because if the computer crashes they will be lost on your computer. But if docs and pics are stored on the external drive then they are not able to be affected by viruses, etc.

  10. :grouphug: I'm sorry. In cases like that I comfort myself by thinking that something better will come up, it wasn't meant to be and God has a better plan. HTH

I think like this as well. Maybe someone else needed it more. OR maybe someone else has something better for you :) I always try to give a few reasons in a positive light before thinking bad. Afterall we are all human :) hang in there :)

  11. We do not fly into Germany, but we do use Iberia airlines and we have not had any problems. We fly in and out of Barajas Madrid going to Morocco and Iberia has always had the least expensive tickets for us. We have had as good experience with them as anyone else traveling with the kids.

February and March. Of course the weather won't be too awesome then.

I usually check with places like Orbitz first then check the individual airlines they list to see if there is a price difference (there sometimes is). Sometimes buying directly from the airline is cheaper.

In terms of price we have gotten the best deals from British Airways and Continental. Luftunsa seems to be quite expensive and I was not happy with their service. Stay away from Iberia (worst service EVER).

  12. I remember at my grandmother's vacation cottage when I was a kid they had a "party line". When you picked up the phone, someone else who lived on the beach may already have been using the line and you had to wait your turn :tongue_smilie:

I wonder if everyone's home phone was like this: We only had to dial the last 5 digits of someone's number. My home # was xxx.xx3.3135 so all I had to dial to call my mom was 33135 as long as we were in the same area. It was in the late 80's when they started making us dial the 7 digits and I remember us all talking about how horrible this was because the community was growing so much that they had to make us dial the complete number! :) Now, to think there are not even home phones and/or pay phones much anymore is just amazing!

  13. Tuna or chicken casserole - my 4th and 5th grader make this for us all of the time! :)

1 box of pasta (whole wheat shells are our favorite)

Tuna or Chicken as much as you want (in a can for quick and easy)

Can of cream of mushroom soup

    1/2 cup of shredded cheese

    frozen peas

    salt and pepper to taste

Cook and drain pasta, mix all ingredients together, then serve!

OR for a nicer presentation: crumble bread crumbs on top with some more shredded cheese and bake until cheese melts into bread crumbs and it is golden brown...

  14. I only have video 2 but my kids LOVE it... They watch it until they get something in their mind then they begin searching frantically for materials to do an experiment. They were watching the magnet section this week and before I knew it they had pulled out our magnet set and spent about 2 hours doing experiments and playing.

I think the dvds are great for the younger kids and I think seeing short experiments gets their minds going more than listening to a text book or just answering questions on a worksheet.

We also use RS4K and other science projects and books as interest shows.

I hope others have more experience with it and can give you more advice :)

  15. The Market is where you can download all of the free apps - many educational ones as well... The big difference between an Android and an IPad is that Android has thousands of absolutely FREE apps. There is NO monthly fee - it is not on a contract with phone companies like some tablets are. The IPad has very few free apps. That is why the others are talking about being anti-mac (I think).

    Michelle' date='

What is Market? Does the Android have similar educational value to the Ipad? Do they have apps? Is there a monthly fee?

I don't know much about all the new technology but the Ipad has really been tempting me lately- however I dislike Apple as well.[/quote']

  16. Audrey, We have the 10.1" android tablet... love it... It does everything and is so versatile. I highly recommend it - even though the new ones are coming out this year. Yes they look good and you can see them on the CES in Las Vegas Live website as they are being introduced. No word on when they will be sold though... We could not wait for that :)

By the way, some people hack them and put the market on there... Some are on ebay with the Market installed.

  17. We live out in the country where satellite is our only choice right now. So, we use Hughes Net... NOT what we would choose if we had a choice, but I do not think any satellite offers any better. As someone else mentioned there is a free download period in the night which is good if you are techy and can schedule downloads.

Youtube, videos, downloading books, picture exchange, etc all takes bandwidth and we have been knocked off so many times. That means there is a 24 hour waiting period for the account to clear and it will run fine again. (that is when I load up the kids and say, you want to go play at Mcdonald's? So I can use the wifi :)

On the other hand, it is much better than dial up and it has been reliable for us as long as we don't download too much. The weather effects it as well if there is a storm or snow/ice on the dish. We have to clean it off sometimes.

Good luck with your decision :)
