  1. Unschooling does not mean that they do not read, write or do math. It simply means that they do it on less restricted terms than one who uses a set curriculum and time schedule. Unschooled children will read and often will read A LOT. So, you would simply keep a log of all the reading. Watching documentaries can be logged for studying history for example. You can also discuss the historical implications, hows and whys of the events. Math will come into play when they ask how much change will I get back if I have $5 and want to buy a toy for $2.87. You help them figure it out and maybe give them other learning scenarios. Once you see that they have grasp the concept and can figure money situations with ease, you can log that they have mastered counting money, adding/subtracting with decimals, etc. Science comes naturally too. You can log into a notebook or computer program the things that get covered. Some people just use an end of the year evaluation to see it the child has mastered certain skills. There are also unschoolers who use a curriculum very loosely. I keep logs of everything that we do. It may be that we went canoeing, saw a blue heron, and went home to research it. It may be that in the grocery store we discussed our heart and how we should eat low fat and low cholesterol items. The kids LOVE a scavenger hunt in the store to find something they like without msg, gelatin or cholesterol in it. It is great for reading and health.

Different states have different rules of course and in the more strict states I think you would just put a portfolio together of pictures, letters written to friends (copy), activities, videos, reading logs, mastery logs, etc.

  2. Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville TN has an excellent engineering school. They have been top rated in the past, not sure of their standing now. The town of Cookeville is an EXCELLENT place to be - has been rated in the top cities for cost and quality of living... It is definitely a place I would consider to send a college student. It is a state university.

  3. I am headed out the door right now, but I asked a similar question last year and most people told me to google each state and 'standardized test'. They sometimes keep their old tests online for the students and teachers to study by. If you do not find what you need, I will look for the old posts and send you links. Good luck :)

  4. Switching orthodontists mid stream doesn't always save money. :(

Yes, I see someone else posted that they will not service the braces if they did not put them on. In that case, you are right... no savings :( But in Morocco dentists are so much cheaper than here. Braces would be a few hundred dollars instead of thousands. However, I do not imagine that we will live there for a few years at a time so that would end up with no savings...

  5. I had just opened a blog from a homeschool mom here in the hive. I opened it in a tab and accidentally closed the page before I realized it and I do not have history enabled :( I have no idea which thread I found it in, but it has a quote on the front page that tells of the family being at the beach and the father said he wants to live the life of leisure... The daughter said, but dad you do live the life of easier.

It has lots of middle ages resources that I saw and probably much more... Please help me find this blog :)

    Thanks!

  6. Not the Coby but I have an Archos Android tablet. My tech savvy husband felt that it was the way to go.

He thinks that information from this forum may help you.

    Jane

My husband thinks the same thing :) We have 2 of them and have been happy with the archos. The 10" is about $300 on amazon. My kids read books, play games, and get on the internet with ours. Great little devices :) I have heard a lot of good about the ipad too, but the android systems have MANY more free apps. Apple tries to make money wherever they can and the android will save you from paying for apps.

  7. I would talk to my insurance agent first, and see if they can get you the money. If not, they might be able to recommend an honest attorney.

When I had state farm insurance, I remember always seeing that my insurance would cover lawyers in case of accidents. You may check with your insurance company and see if they will provide a lawyer in this case. It would be in their best interest so that they do not have to pay too much out of pocket. I would think that they would not be responsible to pay for your van, but rather the other guys insurance.

  8. For privacy - it's a public board, I'd rather not parade my IRL identity for anyone to see. I've been around the internet for a decade and have seen enough to make me convinced that less is definitely more when it comes to what you share online ;). (And it has nothing to do with fears about random internet 'child predators' and everything to do with not wanting people who know me IRL to find me on boards when I don't desire for those parts of my life to be publicly broadcast - or might not want them stalking me online :)).

    :iagree:

  9. I attended the GHC. I purchased from Geo-Matters, Rainbow Resource, Math U See, Einstein's Insomnia, PHP, Analytical Grammar and others. I should note that KH's facebook has a photo of John Holt's Biology book as an example of books "infiltrating" the community. I purchased the homeschool set from RR (online, not at the conference though).

This makes me want to order John Holt's Biology book - right now :)
