My son went to community college in NYS and didn't need a transcript, although he did have to take a placement test. He did the 24 hour credit program in what would have been 11th grade (earned 24 college credits and his GED). He stayed another year full time, then transferred to SUNY Albany as a junior. SUNY Albany only requested his community college transcript. Amy

My unmotivated ds is in 8th this year. We started the WWII unit study from Build Your Library a few weeks ago and so far he likes it. It's great for me to have the books picked out and scheduled, as I have a tendency to get bogged down when trying to design my own unit study. For science we have been using Friendly Chemistry, partly at a co-op. We will finish at the end of April and will probably use at least part of Elemental Chemistry to finish out the year. Amy

I am interested in using Cover Story Writing with my 8th grade son this year. Does anyone know whether it would be possible to combine it with history? We will be doing the first Human Odyssey book; would it work for him to use Ancient History as the topic for his magazine? Amy

Has anyone used the full Memoria Press program for upper elementary? I would love to hear what you think. I've searched the boards and it looks like most of reviews are by people using K - 2nd grade. I am interested in using 6th grade next year for my son. Specifically, are the student workbooks and literature guides busywork, or is there more to them than that? I think my ds would like the books used; I would probably use them anyway. It would be great to have a schedule. If someone could compare Memoria Press to Oak Meadow that would be the icing on the cake for me! I am looking for a secular program (or something that can be used secularly) that is planned out, with some questions to answer. We have tried SL, TOG, WTM, and "winging it" (multiple times for each). Amy

Could you try some videos? My ds does Insanity with me, but we also do a few Bob Harper DVDs. We were able to get Bob Harper from the library to try it and then purchased each dvd for less than $10. You could try yoga, pilates, weights (light hand weights), etc. Amy

I have tried several TOG units at various point over the years. My ds15 is in 10th grade - the dialectic books are too easy for him, but the rhetoric books are a little dry for him. He loves history, so I don't want to turn him off by forcing him to read books that appear to be college level. I am wondering if anyone has been successful just using the history questions and maybe some of the literature? It seems expensive, but might be worth it if it helps with accountability and writing. Our current system is that he reads a book and is then supposed to summarize it...he will read the book and talk about it, but getting the written summary is like pulling teeth! I purchased TWEM recently to help get him going, but might need a back-up plan. We are secular homeschoolers - there just doesn't seem to be much out there for high school history. He could read SWB's high school books - but I don't know how to get him writing about what he has read. Any ideas would be appreciated. I should add that he can write - he worked his way through SWI C this summer with no problem. Thanks. Amy

My ds started with R&S 4 last year (he was in 4th grade). We had tried Shurley at the beginning of the year, but neither of us liked it. For some reason diagramming really helps him. Sometimes he can't pick out the subject/verb, etc. until he actually diagrams the sentence. This year we are going to try AAL. Amy

Can someone explain how the OM History works? I have looked at the 5th grade sample on the website, but it isn't very extensive. It looks like you read the OM book and then there is a list of optional additional reading for each lesson. Is this correct? Are extra books listed for every lesson? I am trying to decide whether OM 5 History/English and Science would work for my ds this year. Any other info. would be appreciated! Thanks. Amy C.

My son did the Geometry this year, before Advanced Algebra, and didn't have any trouble. He did MUS Geometry before LOF Geometry though. Next year he will do MUS Algebra 2 before doing LOF Advanced Algebra. Amy

I have been wanting the circa punch, etc. for years. Is anyone still using these with their children? How do they hold up? My ds 15 prefers spiral notebooks to binders. He likes to sketch for history though and I hate to see him put all of that work onto cheap, lined paper. Thanks. Amy
