  1. Ds was not thrilled about making them either, but I talked to Amy at the Cincy convention and she strongly suggested making them.
  2. I hope you know I'm just teasing you Lori. You really should get a commission for promoting the curriculum. Reading your posts over the years made me take a closer look at it.
  3. Here you go: ISBN 0-618-26025-0 (one volume pbk) ISBN 0-618-26024-2 (one volume hdbk) ISBN 0-618-34399-7 (one volume pbk) ISBN 0-618-34584-1 (one volume hdbk) ISBN 0-618-26029-3 (three volume pbk in slipcase with film covers)
  4. In the older edition all of the student pages are included in the Tr edition, of course, with the answers filled in. We were planning to use the program mostly orally so it wasn't a problem for us. For the first few chapters I read the summaries out loud and had ds fill in the blanks. He had no problems recalling the info so from that point on we just read the summaries and vocab lists together and he would answer the questions orally. My main goal of using this curriculum was to explore the books together, discuss, and learn, so for our needs the 1st edition worked well. HTH Hope Lori D. the LLfLOTR queen ;) will chime in.
  5. Y'know, I may have to call RFWP to see if they will still carry the older volumes. All the best to you as you transition into high school and afterschooling.
  6. Ds has been working through the first part of Wheelock this year and is signed up to take Latin 2 next year through Lukeion. Did your dc make flashcards for the vocab? Did you buy the special 2x3 cards recommended or just use regular index cards? Did you use different colored sharpies for nouns, verbs etc. Thanks. VH (who already owns LC 1&2 cards, vocab cards made by ds for Latin Prep....sigh)
  7. I wondered about that too. We like streamlined, uncluttered books in general but I thought I'd wait and see what the new books look like before purchasing WWtW vol 2, since I don't need them right away. I think the old edition will still be available. Are you using Vol 1 or 2 right now?
  8. It is a full year study. If you take rabbit trails with the Unit studies it may stretch out even longer!
  9. Oops, sorry I meant that I use the 1st Edition, the 2nd edition is the newest one. I'll try to edit my post if I can. Sorry for the confusion.
  10. Ds did CE2 last year and we started WWtW vol 1 this year. I had heard that it was pretty intense so we decided to spread one lesson over 2 weeks. I didn't want to kill ds' love of words and we were in no rush. Ds will be going into 9th and if we don't finish all 3 volumes that's OK. We may pick up the pace depending on what vols 2 and 3 look like. I was ready to purchase vol 2 at convention last month but Tom K. mentioned that a revamp was in the works - he couldn't give me a time frame. I decided that since we were still half-way through vol 1, I would wait to purchase vol 2. With WWtW, I do have ds use quizlet occasionally to review.
  11. We have been using the K12 Human Odyssey books for our second rotation of History, having used SOTW in Elem. We did try adding History Odyssey vol 2 Medieval for the 6th grade but decided that we would just keep it simple and use Hum Ody. for 7th/8th. We are finishing up Vol 3 of Human Odyssey this year in 8th grade - we stretched out volumes 1-3 over four years. Our simple approach has been to read one chapter/week, outline it and write an essay on a topic once a week. Of course, ds read several books recommended in the WTM logic stage lists. This has worked for us. HTH
  12. We have been using the 1st Edition Teacher's manual this year for 8th grade. Ds and I have enjoyed it. However we have done it mostly orally - ds has done the vocab quizzes and tests but none of the writing assignments. Our goal was to enjoy the books and learn more through the related unit studies. I had never read the books before so this has been a fascinating study. With the 2nd edition you do need both the Tr and Student books.
  13. Welcome to the boards Deana. Sorry to hear of your loss. :grouphug::grouphug:
  14. Yes, I spent a lot of time in Rooms 260-262 too. Andrew Kern's first session was fabulous. I didn't really get a chance to cruise the Exhibit Hall much this year but I did stop by specific booths to talk to folks. I didn't attend any of SWB's talks because I own them on CDs. I would've loved to hear her "Hsing the Second Time" talk even though I've heard it before, but my ride was leaving at 2 pm on Sat. :-( It was fun to say hello to familiar faces and have dessert with a few of you. Thanks to Elizabeth for organizing the gathering. The convention was definitely not as crowded as last year. We got there a little earlier on Thurs afternoon to beat the insane crowd at registration we experienced last year, but it wasn't crowded at all. I'm not sure if I will attend next year but I'm glad I made the effort to get there this year.
  15. Would you share how you are using LToW for Literature. I have been using CW with ds and we are currently in Chreia. I hope to continue with Herodotus next year in 9th. I've been a fan of Circe for several years but have stuck my fingers into my ears regarding LToW. ;) Now you have me curious again!! I really don't need another program.
  16. Hope others with more experience chime in. We've used a variety of materials including PL, LC 1&2, Latin Prep 1 and part of 2. This year in 8th grade ds has been working through Wheelock on his own with some guidance from me. Next year he will take Latin 2 through Lukeion. It will be his first outsourced class. I just couldn't stay ahead of him.
  17. Gold on Latin 1 with a perfect paper. Yay! Congratulations to all. For those who've administered it to one/two students did your packet arrive in decent condition. This is the second year that UPS has delivered the packet in an awful condition. Last year ds received a certificate of Merit for a perfect paper for the Intro level and it was bent in several places. This year the test booklet arrived bent in a couple of places and I was dreading the results packet. It arrived creased but not as horribly bent like last year. I'm wondering if you all have had similar experiences. :bigear:
  18. We used Memoria Press' Christian Studies for elementary grades followed by Rod and Staff for grades 5-8. I'm still undecided on what we will use for high school.
  19. I haven't used this series but you could read the book "Science Matters" by Hazen and Trefil along with the series. I don't know if it is recommended in the handbook that goes along with the series.
  20. I am very well - it's been a lovely day. I love shortbread cookies. I'm thankful for: 1. Being able to attend a wonderful service at church this morning. 2. I got to celebrate my 51st birthday today. 3. My wonderful dh who fixes cream puffs for my birthday every year (except for last year when we took friends out for Grater's icecream in Cincy since we were all at the homeschool convention) Thanks for the invitation to the Sunday chat!
  21. Thanks GVA. I hope to have ds take the Latin AP and a couple of other SAT II exams. He will also have Alg 1 and Geom prior to 9th grade and I plan to have him take 4 more Math courses in High School.
  22. Thanks kathkath - I will keep that in mind. BTW, I still remember how you took screen shots of SWB's slides at the Cincy convention :D. Are you going this year? See ya. (I need to log off and fix lunch)
  23. Ds says it was fine. We only got to the end of Chap 7 of LP 2 before he switched. Also, the first few chapters of Wheelock was mostly review for him so he may run into issues later. He will definitely have to work on the vocab if he is allowed to move into Latin 2 at Lukeion. HTH
